Gov. Kristi Noem: ‘More South Dakotans Have Died from Accidental Injuries’ than Coronavirus in Last 5 Months

More South Dakotans have died from accidental injuries than the Chinese coronavirus over the last five months, Gov. Kristi Noem (R) said Monday.

There is a risk associated with everything that we do in life; more South Dakotans have died from accidental injuries than from #COVID19 in the past 5 months,” Noem began in an attempt to put the challenge of defeating the virus in perspective.

“We mitigate risks by taking proper precautions,” she continued.

“We take precautions when we get in our cars, when we operate farm equipment, and when we make choices about what we eat and how much we exercise,” Noem added. “The same should be true about life as we continue getting back to normal”:

Noem famously refused to issue a stay-at-home order in her state during the peak of the pandemic, instead urging businesses to heed to guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). She formally unveiled the state’s “back to normal” plan at the end of April, urging individuals and employers to encourage good hygiene, adhere to proper social distancing guidelines, and conduct health screenings “where appropriate.”

Her plan also instructed health care providers to continue restricting access to nursing homes and called on hospitals treating coronavirus patients to “reserve 30% of their hospital beds and maintain appropriate stores of PPE to meet surge demand.”

Noem has continued to defend her approach, telling Fox & Friends last month that her administration addressed the crisis in a way that preserved South Dakotans’ freedoms.

“I think what we did here in South Dakota is really remarkable because we gave people their freedom,” she said.

“We let the businesses stay open, we let people go to work, we told them to be smart, and we also asked them to be personally responsible,” she continued. “And, we’re seeing benefits of that each and every day in South Dakota.”

“Trust your people,” Noem said when asked to give advice to fellow governors. “Don’t lay down mandates that are going to hinder the ability that they need to really get through this difficult time.”

“Trust them, give them the facts, let them make decisions that are right for their families,” she added.

South Dakota, which has an estimated population of over 884,000, has reported 9,663 cumulative cases of the virus and 146 related deaths. According to the state’s department of health, 1,146 of those cases are active.

PBS’s ‘Arthur’ Rolls Out Propaganda Video for Kids: ‘It’s Not Enough to Say, I’m Not Racist’

PBS children’s show Arthur is pumping out taxpayer-funded propaganda depicting the United States as a racist country where unjustified police brutality against black Americans is an aspect of everyday life.

The segment began with a conversation between the protagonist Arthur the aardvark and his best friend, Buster the rabbit, in which the pair make obvious reference to the distressing video of George Floyd in police custody (though they don’t mention Floyd by name).

“Did you see that video?” Arthur asks Buster.

“Yeah, I just watched it. It was awful! I can’t believe someone would be hurt like that, just because they’re black.”

“Buster, it happens everywhere!” Arthur responds. “I was talking to Mrs. MacGrady the other day and she said there’s a really long history of black people not being treated fairly in this country.”

“It has to stop!,” Buster exclaims.

The pair are later joined by their school lunch lady Mrs. MacGrady, who explains how racism is “like a disease” that is “gonna get worse” without further action. “Yes, I saw [the video] too. And let me tell you, it made my blood boil,” she says, before adding that “it’s not enough to say, ‘I’m not racist, it’s not my problem.'”

This is not the first time that Arthur, which as part of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) is funded by taxpayer dollars, has employed progressive propaganda. Last May, the show featured the gay wedding of the protagonist’s primary school teacher Mr. Ratburn.

In 2005, its spin-off show, Postcards from Buster also featured a lesbian couple in the episode “Sugar Time.” The content was consequently condemned by then-Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, which prompted PBS to pull the episode.

Russia receives orders from 20 countries for ONE BILLION doses of world’s first Covid-19 vaccine

A total of 20 nations from Latin America, the Middle East, and Asia have already requested doses of Russia’s breakthrough coronavirus vaccine, which was confirmed to be registered on Tuesday by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

At a conference dedicated to the announcement of the vaccine’s registration, the CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) explained that it had already received orders for a billion doses.

“Together with our foreign partners, we are ready to produce more than 500 million doses of the vaccine per year,” Kirill Dmitriev explained. Everything produced in Russia will be used domestically, and doses for use in other countries will be made abroad.

According to Dmitriev, the RDIF is also working on a humanitarian aid program for developing countries, with the aim of making the Covid-19 vaccine available in states that can’t afford to make or buy their own.

Explaining that vaccination is an acute problem in the world’s poorest countries, Dmitriev said that the fund believes “people around the world should have equal access to a vaccine, regardless of their financial situation.”

On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the country had registered the world’s first Covid-19 vaccine. Named “Sputnik V,” the vaccine is due to enter mass production soon, and will be available to the general public from January 2021. Despite being registered, the vaccine will still go through more clinical trials in Russia and the Middle East.

WHO Vows To "Review" Russian COVID-19 Vaccine, Top US Scientist Slams Putin's "Reckless" Move

Update (1145ET): The WHO has decided to review the COVID-19 vaccine candidate officially approved by Russian regulators on Tuesday, saying it would require "a rigorous safety data review".

“We are in close contact with the Russian health authorities and discussions are ongoing with respect to possible WHO pre-qualification of the vaccine,” said Tarik Jasarevic, the United Nations health agency’s spokesman. He made the statement while answering questions during a digital press briefing on Tuesday.

"Pre-qualification of any vaccine includes the rigorous review and assessment of all the required safety and efficacy data."

Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine was developed by Moscow's Gamaleya research institute with help from the Russian defense ministry. It was tested at Moscow's state medical university.

A total of 165 candidate vaccines are being tested around the world, according to a WHO tally. 139 of these are still in pre-clinical evaluation, while 26 have progressed to various phases of human testing. The 6 market leaders have already reached Phase 3.

The Gamaleya Institute candidate being produced in Russia (it's far from the only vaccine project underway in the country) is among the 26 being tested on humans in the country. However, it's still listed as 'Phase 1' for testing.

Kirill Dmitriev, the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, the project's main financial backer, confirmed Tuesday that Phase 3 trials are ready to begin on Wednesday, while mass production likely won't begin until September or October. More than 20 countries have already ordered doses, he added. Jasarevic added that the process being undertaken by the WHO to review the Russian vaccine would be the same undertaken for any other vaccine project.

“Every country has national regulatory agencies that approve the use of vaccines or medicines on its territory,” Jasarevic explained.

"WHO has in place a process of pre-qualification for vaccines but also for medicines. Manufacturers ask to have the WHO pre-qualification because it is a sort of stamp of quality."

"To get this, there is a review and assessment of all required safety and efficacy data that are gathered through the clinical trials. WHO will do this for any candidate vaccine."

But even if things don't work out with the Russian candidate, Jasarevic said, there are many other vaccine candidates in Phase 3, and beyond.

"We are encouraged by the speed by which several candidate vaccines have been developing and as we have been always saying, we hope some of these vaccines will prove to be safe and efficient," said Jasarevic. "Accelerating progress does not mean compromising on safety," he said.

However, Dr. Ali Nouri, a molecular biologist and President of the Federation of American Scientists, slammed Russia's decision as "reckless" and insisted that Russia's vaccine is "well behind" the biggest western and Chinese competitors.

Google Claims ‘Glitch’ Disrupted Search Results Globally

Tech giant Google’s flagship product, Google Search, claims a major ‘glitch” has disrupted search results. Users around the world reported bizarre results to searches, such as a concentration of links to major e-commerce companies like Amazon and wildly inaccurate responses to requests for recipes. It is currently believed that the issue has been fixed but Google has yet to release the full details of the supposed error.

Search Engine Journal reports that Google’s search algorithm suffered what it claims is a major glitch recently that negatively affected search results. Initially, some believed it to be the result of an update pushed by Google, but the company has since announced that the affected search results were the result of an error.

John Mueller, a Webmaster Trends Analyst at Google tweeted that the issue was caused by a Glitch at Google and a fix had been issued:

Barr May Have Had Secret Reasons for Dropping Flynn Case: DOJ Lawyer to Appeals Court

The case of former Trump national security advisor Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn (U.S. Army Ret.) took another turn Tuesday in oral arguments before a the D.C. Court of Appeals on the appeal of the court’s mandamus order directing Judge Emmet Sullivan to dismiss the DOJ criminal case against Flynn for perjury despite Flynn having pleaded guilty in the case.

In response to a question by Judge Merrick Garland, acting U.S. Solicitor General Jeffrey Wall told the court Tuesday that Attorney General William Barr may have had secret information that contributed to the reasoning for the DOJ to dismiss the case. Flynn’s attorney Sydney Powell filed for the writ of mandamus when Sullivan embarked on an investigation into the DOJ request for dismissal, appointing an outside counsel and indicating he would seek additional charges against Flynn for changing his plea.

The DOJ had provided multiple reasons for U.S. District Court Judge Emmet Sullivan to throw out its own case against Flynn, who had previously pleaded guilty of lying to the FBI about his contacts with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. in the weeks before Trump’s inauguration.

But Wall, who was representing the DOJ, told a full panel of judges on the appeals court in Washington, D.C., that Barr’s judgment on Flynn’s case came “in the context of non-public information from other investigations.”

“I just wanted to make clear that it may be possible that the attorney general had before him information that he was not able to share with the court,” Wall said, “and so what we put in front of the court were the reasons that we could, but it may not be the whole picture available to the executive branch.”

More Wall: “We gave three reasons. One of them was that the interests of justice were no longer served in the attorney general’s judgment by the prosecution. Donald Trump: If I Lose in 2020, America Will Have to Speak Chinese

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that China will “own” the United States if former Vice President Joe Biden wins the presidency in 2020.

“If I don’t win the election, China will own the United States,” Trump said. “You’re going to have to learn to speak Chinese, you want to know the truth and you’ll have to learn it fast.”

The president spoke with radio host Hugh Hewitt on Tuesday morning.

Hewitt asked Trump to react to American intelligence reports showing communist Chinese officials want Trump to lose the election.

“Because they’ll own the United State if he wins, and with me, they were having the worst year in 67 years because I tariffed the hell out of them,” Trump said.

Biden said in an interview last week that he would remove tariffs on China, complaining that Trump was “going after China the wrong way.” He argued that China would change only if confronted by an international coalition led by the United States.

Trump has increasingly criticized China and President Xi Jinping for allowing the coronavirus to spread across the globe.

“I would say we had a great relationship. He’s a great gentleman,” he said. “But my relationship is no longer very good with him because of what they did with the China virus.”

President Trump: ‘Last Thing I’m Thinking About’ After Coronavirus Is a Phase Two China Deal

President Donald Trump told Breitbart News exclusively in the Oval Office on Monday that he is not currently considering negotiating a phase two trade deal with China.

Trump said in the nearly 30-minute exclusive interview that because of the coronavirus pandemic, which originated in Wuhan, China, and spread around the world, he is not considering negotiating another deal with China at this time.

“We made a great deal, on the phase one deal,” Trump said. “The last thing I think about right now is phase two. It’s the last thing I’m thinking about right now, is a China phase two deal, after what they did to us on the China virus.”

When asked for more details on what else exactly he intends to do to hold the Chinese Communist Party accountable for the Wuhan coronavirus, the president was less specific.

“They should have stopped it, it being there,” Trump told Breitbart News of the coronavirus when asked how he will hold China accountable. “We’ll see what happens. I can’t tell you yet, but we’ll see what happens. They certainly started it and they could have held it. Look, it didn’t get into China. But it went all over the world. They could have stopped it. They should have.”

Asked to lay out what he has done as president to combat the Chinese Communist Party, Trump laid out several actions he has taken particularly with regard to trade and helping American farmers.

“You take a look at on trade, you take a look at what we’ve done on trade deals and everything else,” Trump said. “But you also look at what I’ve done to them on tariffs—massive tariffs. We’ve taken in literally hundreds of billions of dollars in tariffs. It’s had an impact that’s positive. We’ve given $28 billion to our farmers because they were targeted by China. Nobody has ever done that before. That was one of the weak spots. China had told other administrations they were going to target the farmers. So the other administrations always caved. I said that’s okay, you target the farmers and I’ll target you. We charged them a tariff, a 25 percent tariff. We’ve taken in tens of billions of dollars. We actually gave $12 billion plus $16 billion and then more this year to the farmers because that’s the amount of money that the farmers we’re targeted for. So the farmers—you ever notice you never hear anything bad from the farmers? It’s because they hit pay dirt because of me. Without me, they would be out of business right now. They hit pay dirt. We gave them $28 billion for targeted aid. You have to say thank you China, because China paid it—we didn’t pay it.”

General Motors' CFO Resigns After Just Two Years To Work At Stripe

Mired in recession and dealing with the toughest environment for auto sales over the last several decades, the U.S. auto industry has seen another top executive depart. Just days after we reported turnover at the CEO role at Ford, General Motors is following with a C-suite shakeup of its own, as its CFO leaves after just two years to work at a fintech startup.

The company announced today that John Stapleton, GM North America chief financial officer, has been named its acting global chief financial officer, effective Aug. 15, after the resignation of the company's current CFO, Dhivya Suryadevara.

Suryadevara is leaving the company on short notice, similar to the departure of Ford's CEO, Jim Hackett, who quit last week. According to Bloomberg, Suryadevara will join PayPal competitor Stripe, as its CFO, the San Francisco-based company said.

GM CEO Mary Barra said that "Dhivya has been a transformational leader in her tenure as CFO. She has helped the company strengthen our balance sheet, improve our cost structure, focus on cash generation and drive the right investments for our future. We wish her every success."

Suryadevara said: "I am grateful for the opportunities I have been given at GM. While I look forward to a new opportunity that will allow me to apply my skills in a new sector, I have great confidence in GM's trajectory and future." Stapleton, who is temporarily taking over duties, has been with General Motors since 1990 and has served in several different finance roles with the company.

GM shares were up as much as 3.5% to 28.96 shortly after the open of regular trading Tuesday.

After Multiple Ft. Hood Soldiers Murdered, 2 More Soldiers Arrested in Child Trafficking Sting

The Fort Hood military base in Texas has come under extreme scrutiny in recent months, as numerous dead soldiers were found on or around the base. This week, the base was in the news again after two Fort Hood soldiers were caught up in the bust of a child trafficking ring. The soldiers were among nine Texas residents who were arrested during a two-day child sex trafficking sting in Killeen, the city where the base is located.

“The overall goal of this joint effort was to locate and arrest subjects who were willing to make overt efforts to pay minors to engage in sexual acts,” police spokeswoman Ofelia Miramontez said, according to KWTX.

Miramontez said that social media exchanges between the men running the organization and undercover agents showed that they knowingly traded money, drugs, and alcohol “for sexual acts with girls they believed were 15 or 16 years of age.”

The men arrested include Anthony 25-year-old, Xavier Antwon of Fort Hood, 40-year-old Javier Perez, of Austin, 21-year-old Brian Harley Flynn, of Temple, 25-year-old Brandon Anthony Lee, of Killeen, 42-year-old Dustin Edward Johnson, of Lott, 30-year-old Timmy Jones Jr., of Fort Hood, 39-year-old Shaun Paul Moore, of Kempner, 28-year-old Rakeem Jamal Nelson, of Killeen, and 32-year-old Pierre Jean, of Killeen.

This news comes on the heels of another sex trafficking bust that took place last month in which 6 Fort Hood soldiers were arrested in a sex trafficking sting. It also comes after a string of suspicious and outright violent and gruesome deaths of soldiers.

The first missing soldier to be reported by the national media was found dead near the base on June 21st. The remains were identified as 24-year-old soldier Gregory Morales, who had been missing for months. His death was not even being investigated, as officials with the Army believed that he deserted the base, but now they do suspect that he was murdered.

Then on July 1st, the body of 20-year-old Vanessa Guillen was found near the base. A suspect in that case, Fort Hood soldier Aaron Robinson, shot and killed himself as police moved in to arrest him. Then last month, another missing soldier’s body was found 15 miles outside of the military base, making it the third body found in just the last month. The remains were identified as 26-year-old Mejhor Morta, a soldier from Florida who just joined the army last year as a mechanic.

Countless people have taken to social media after the discovery of Morta’s body and have called for the closing of Fort Hood.

China Outpaces US With Record 133 Firms on Fortune 500 List for First Time in History Amid Trade War

The listing of the world's biggest companies saw 133 Chinese firms across the mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong make the roster compared with 121 US businesses. The news comes amid a major surge in foreign investment in Chinese tech firms amid the ongoing US trade war with China.

Chinese firms listed on the Fortune Global 500 have surpassed US companies for the first time in history, it was found on Monday.

Three Chinese state-owned enterprises (SOEs) - Sinopec Group, State Grid and China National Petroleum - came in second, third and fourth, respectively, with Arkansas-based Walmart topping the list.

“Chinese companies outnumbering US ones shows that China’s economy is large enough to cause US concerns,” Zhang Lin, an independent political economist in Beijing said in a statement.

But many Chinese firms on the list were SOEs backed by the Chinese government in the world's largest market, Fortune said.

“The good thing is that infrastructure and energy companies belong to the field of public utilities, and state-owned monopolies avoid redundant construction and enhances pricing power. But the bad thing is that these companies have huge scale, rely on administrative power and policy inclination to form monopolies, and they are different from companies that grow in the market,” Zhang Lin said.

Huawei Technologies also skyrocketed to 49th, up 12 places from 61, reaching the top 50 list for the first time in history, the report said.

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd also posted major gains on the roster, rising from 182nd to 132nd on the list, with numerous companies such as Tencent Holdings Ltd, ecommerce platform JD.com and Xiaomi making the grade.

China's banking giants Industrial & Commercial Bank of China, China Construction Bank, Bank of China and Agricultural Bank of China, also retained places on the Fortune 500.

“There were precisely zero Global 500 companies based in mainland China in 1990 when we began our survey. Today there are more giant for-profit enterprises there than anywhere else on earth,” Fortune magazine editor-in-chief, Clifton Leaf, said in a statement.

According to the list, 53 Japanese firms, 31 French companies, 27 German firms and 22 British enterprises also made the list, Pandaily reported.

The news comes as the mainland Shanghai Stock Exchange's Science and Technology Innovation (STAR) board became the second-largest platform in the world by initial public offerings, with foreign investment reaching record highs in July.

Shanghai-based Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) also saw a massive surge in foreign investment in recent weeks after joining the STAR board and exiting the New York Stock Exchange.

Netanyahu blames Washington for stalled West Bank annexation, says Trump ‘busy with other things’

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed frustration over stalled plans to annex the West Bank, blaming the hold-up on Washington’s reluctance to approve the move.

“It was clear from the start that the application of sovereignty would be done only with agreement from the United States. Otherwise, I would have already done it a while ago,” Netanyahu told Israel’s Channel 20. He claimed that US President Donald Trump was now “busy with other things” and that “issues of importance to Israel” were not a top priority for Washington at the moment.

The annexation, which is part of Trump’s ‘peace plan’ for the region, was originally slated to begin in July. Under the White House plan, Israel would absorb 30 percent of the occupied territory that it captured from Jordan during the 1967 Six Day War. The rest of the West Bank would be governed by Palestinians, but security and border policy would be decided by Israel.

More than 460,000 Israelis live in these settlements, built in violation of international laws, and the annexation will strip the Palestinians of a significant chunk of their territory. Palestinian factions denounced the proposal as dead on arrival.

However, the Trump administration has reportedly been unwilling to give final approval to push forward with annexation. Netanyahu said at the start of August that he was waiting for Washington’s signal to “apply sovereignty” to the West Bank.

Although the White House was initially supportive of annexation, the plan has received near-unanimous opposition in the international community.

If the annexation doesn’t occur in the coming weeks, it’s possible that it could be halted indefinitely. Netanyahu is currently in a budget battle with Alternate Prime Minister Benny Gantz. If a budget isn’t passed by the end of August, Israel would be forced to hold another election, putting annexation on hold for the foreseeable future. There are also fears in Tel Aviv that they could lose support for the move if Trump fails to secure re-election in November.

A McDonald's lawsuit claims that the company's fired CEO Stephen Easterbrook deleted dozens of nude photos that were sent using his work email and phone as part of a coverup so he wouldn't be caught as the fast-food chain tries to recoup tens of millions of dollars in severance and benefits.

The 53-year-old was fired from his $16 million-a-year job in November last year after he admitted to having an inappropriate relationship with a female employee who he exchanged videos and text messages with.

He in fact had relationships with five women who worked for the company.

Only one of them has been named; PR executive Denise Paleothodoros.

In a lawsuit filed in Delaware on Monday, McDonald's said it had found dozens of nude or sexually explicit photos of women, including the three employees, that Easterbrook sent to his personal email account from his company email account.

'That evidence consisted of dozens of nude, partially nude, or sexually explicit photographs and videos of various women, including photographs of these company employees, that Easterbrook had sent as attachments to messages from his company email account to his personal email account,' the lawsuit says.

McDonald's has accused Easterbrook of deleting the emails and attached photos from his company-issued phone shortly before he was ousted in a bid to prevent investigators from learning about them prior to his firing.

The deleted emails and photos, which were sent in late 2018 and early 2019, remained on a company server unbeknownst to him, the lawsuit states.

'The photos are indisputable evidence that Easterbrook repeatedly violated the company’s prohibition of any kind of intimate relationship between employees in a direct or indirect reporting relationship,' the lawsuit says.

Lebanon's prime minister and his cabinet resigned tonight in the wake of the devastating Beirut explosion which has killed more than 160 people.

The Prime Minister blamed a 'corrupt' political class that has ruled Lebanon for more than 30 years for the August 4 explosion, sparked when a warehouse fire ignited 2,750 tons of highly explosive ammonium nitrate that had been stored in the city's port for six years.

Diab praised his government - assembled after previous Prime Minister Saad Hariri stepped down amid protests over corruption - for fighting 'valiantly and with dignity' to reform the country.

But he said that 'I have discovered an apparatus of corruption that is greater than the state,' heaping pressure on Hezbollah-backed President Michel Aoun who will now lead a search for his replacement.

'Between us and change is big powerful barrier,' Diab added as a parting shot.

US Dollar Devalues by 99% vs Gold in 100 Years—Gold Price Crosses $2,067

The spot gold price crossed $2,067 dollars per troy ounce today, another all-time high. Since the 1930s the U.S. dollar has lost 99% of its value against gold.

A world reserve currency is supposed to be superior in storing value, but through boundless money printing the U.S. dollar hasn’t been able to compete with gold by a long shot. In 1932 the gold price was $20.67 dollars per troy ounce, today it crossed $2,067 dollars.

That’s a 99% decline in value of the dollar against gold. Other reserve currencies such as the British pound and Japanese yen have done even worse. The yen has lost 99.98% of its value against gold in 100 years. Note, the chart below has a log scale.

Gold doesn’t yield, if you don’t lend it, but it's the only globally accepted financial asset without counterparty risk. Because of its immutable properties gold sustained its role as the sun in our monetary cosmos after the gold standard was abandoned in 1971. Central banks around the world kept holding on to their gold, despite its price reaching all-time highs such as now. This is due to Gresham’s law, which states “bad money drives out good.” If the price of gold rises central banks are more inclined to hoard gold (good money) and spend currency that declines in value (bad money).

In the chart below you can see that gold's purchasing power is remarkably stable. As the gold price rises through time it mainly compensates for fiat currencies being devalued versus goods and services. In other words, the price of gold goes up by the same amount that consumer prices rise. Gold even shows a tendency of increasing in purchasing power, which might reveal inflation numbers published by governments are too low. Another theory is that sound money, like gold, should rise in purchasing power as technological development makes goods increasingly cheaper to produce.

Covid jobs bloodbath as number of people employed falls by 730,000 since lockdown with benefits claims hitting 2.7million - despite furlough scheme propping up millions of roles

The number of people employed fell by another 114,000 last month as coronavirus hammered the jobs market.

Some 730,000 fewer people are now on the payroll than in March before the country went into lockdown to combat the killer disease.

Meanwhile, the claimant count - which includes some people who are in work - increased again in July 2020 to reach 2.7million.

In the three months to June, the number in work decreased by 220,000 - the largest quarterly decrease since 2009.

However, the full impact of the lockdown has so far been masked by the massive support schemes including furlough, which has propped up more than nine million jobs. And many people appear to have chosen to stay economically 'inactive' rather than hunt for work - meaning they remain outside the headline unemployment figures.

ONS economist Jonathan Athow said: 'The labour market continues recent trends, with a fall in employment and significantly reduced hours of work as many people are furloughed.

New Report Reveals US Special Forces Active in 22 African Countries

The US has roughly 6,000 military personnel scattered throughout the continent with military attachés outnumbering diplomats in many embassies across Africa.

A new report published in South African newspaper The Mail and Guardian has shed light on the opaque world of the American military presence in Africa. Last year, elite U.S. Special Operations forces were active in 22 African countries. This accounts for 14 percent of all American commandos deployed overseas, the largest number for any region besides the Middle East. American troops had also seen combat in 13 African nations.

The U.S. is not formally at war with an African nation, and the continent is barely discussed in reference to American exploits around the globe. Therefore, when U.S. operatives die in Africa, as happened in Niger, Mali, and Somalia in 2018, the response from the public, and even from the media is often “why are American soldiers there in the first place?”

The presence of the U.S. military, especially commandos, is rarely publicly acknowledged, either by Washington or by African governments. What they are doing remains even more opaque. U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) generally claims that special forces go no further than so-called “AAA” (advise, assist and accompany) missions. Yet in combat, the role between observer and participant can become distinctly blurry.

The United States has roughly 6,000 military personnel scattered throughout the continent, with military attachés outnumbering diplomats in many embassies across Africa. Earlier this year, The Intercept reported that the military operates 29 bases on the continent. One of these is a huge drone hub in Niger, something The Hill called “the largest U.S. Air Force-led construction project of all time.” The construction cost alone was over $100 million, with total operating costs expected to top $280 billion by 2024. Equipped with Reaper drones, the U.S. can now conduct cross border bombing raids all over the North and West of Africa.

US Plans To Build Up Syrian Proxy Forces to Guard Oilfield

Plan to exploit Syrian oil comes with plan to strengthen Kurdish SDF

US plans for the ongoing war in Syria are, as they so often have been throughout, built around the idea that they can win by arming and propping up the right proxy forces. This is built around the other major US plan, to take Syria’s oil.

Indeed, an agreement on Delta Crescent Energy LLC making a contract on Syrian oil with the Syrian Kurds detailed further plans to bolster the Kurdish SDF and create a force affiliated with them that will guard the US-occupied oilfield.

Official reports played up the US coordination with the SDF, and suggests that there is substantially more SDF capability that they intend to create going forward. That isn’t to say it doesn’t leave open some questions, however.

Even if this is the ultimate plan for taking Syria’s oil, it is not clear what the timeline is for removing the rest of the troops. If this is the endgame scenario, presumably having the SDF protect the oil frees up US troops to leave.

It’s also not clear what all of this is going to cost. The Syrian oil is fairly minimal, and the revenue will be low, so the US is probably going to have to subsidize the occupation above and beyond that.

Indictments Likely by Sep. 4th Against Former Obama Administration Officials

Here is why federal criminal indictments of former Obama Administration officials are likely before September 4th:

As I have previously documented, the case is overwhelming that extremely serious crimes were, in fact, committed and covered-up, and the only real question now is how high up in the Administration they went — possibly up to Barack Obama and Joe Biden, but that’s the big question.

(I need to state here, for the record, that I voted for Barack Obama both times, though recognized in 2012 that he was the lesser of two evils — I am not, and never have been, a Republican.)

The George W. Bush Administration established the precedent that there is a “60-day rule” that any indictment of a person who is associated with a U.S. Presidential election that is to occur within the following 60 days is to be avoided. It’s not a law, but it is — and ever since Bush’s Presidency has been — the custom; and the current U.S. Attorney General, Bill Barr, has reiterated it. Consequently, if there will be any indictments, then Barr would need to be an idiot to bring them after that time.

Any reader here who wants to know, in a general sense, what the crimes were, can find that at my previous presentation.

There is considerable speculation, in Republican circles, regarding how high up those crimes went. (See this and this.) For over a year now, there has also been considerable propaganda from participants in the cover-ups — mainly Democrats — aimed at preparing the public for such indictments (if they happen) by prejudicing the public to believe that (even if the 60-day rule will be adhered to) the public should view the indictments only as being political retribution for Democrats having impeached and tried to remove Trump. (See this, for a recent example of that Democratic Party propaganda.)

Netanyahu says AG ignoring threats to him, family; Mandelblit: A baseless claim

PM asserts Mandelblit ‘allowing spilling of family’s blood’; the latter notes 29 probes opened into threats, adds leaders must ‘tone down bluster and discourse of hatred’

Prime Minister Netanyahu accused Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit on Tuesday of “scandalously” ignoring threats against him and his family, claiming he was putting them at risk as a result

In a letter sent to Mandelblit and publicized on the prime minister’s Telegram channel, Netanyahu wrote: “Zero action on your part in the face of calls to murder me and my family and rape threats against my wife amounts to nothing less than to scandalously allow the spilling of our blood.”

Amid growing public protests against his continued rule, the prime minister has repeatedly claimed the attorney general is not doing enough to address threats against him.

In a response, Mandelblit told the prime minister that “There is no basis to your claim that [we’re] ignoring complaints regarding you or any of your family members.”

Mandelblit noted that in recent months 29 investigations had been opened over such threats and 10 more cases of possible incitement were being examined. He added that he had recently discussed the prime minister’s security with the heads of the police and the Shin Bet security service to ensure any threats were being addressed appropriately, and was satisfied that they were.

He noted that all sides should “tone down the bluster and discourse of hatred” and added that “public leaders have a central role and responsibility in calming the spirits.” Otherwise, he said, there could be “serious and unforgivable consequences.”

Netanyahu has inveighed against an alleged rise in threats against him on social media, some of which later turned out to have been posted by fake Facebook accounts. His complaints have coincided with ongoing protests against him due to his indictment on corruption charges and handling of the coronavirus pandemic. There have also been threats and violence against anti-Netanyahu protesters, only some of which the premier has condemned.

Netanyahu and his allies have also frequently lashed out at Mandelblit, who was the prime minster’s choice for attorney general, for having indicted him in a series of graft cases. Channel 13 news reported Tuesday that amid rising acrimony, the two have not met since March.

In the Tuesday letter, the premier highlighted some protesters’ use of blow-up genitalia with sexually explicit messages directed at his son Yair and wife Sara. Netanyahu also highlighted a tweet in which an unidentified user threatened to rape his wife. Netanyahu claimed that in both instances, Mandelblit had declined to open an immediate investigation.

The man behind the tweet was questioned by police Tuesday, officials said, after it was brought to law enforcement’s attention in recent days. The tweet is from March 2019.
