Warlord’s release from US prison ups tension with Colombia

MIAMI - A last-minute battle is unfolding over the fate of a former paramilitary warlord who the Colombian government wants returned following a long drug sentence in U.S. prison.

Salvatore Mancuso, the top commander of a since-disbanded group of right-wing militias, completed a 12-year cocaine trafficking sentence in March.

He remains in U.S. custody as Colombia — where courts have judged him responsible for more than 1,500 acts of murder or forced disappearance — fights a U.S. order that would send him to Italy, where he also has citizenship.

Facebook sued for allegedly harvesting biometric data via Instagram

Facebook is being sued for allegedly collecting the biometric data of Instagram users or people who appear in photos on the platform without their consent.

In the complaint, lodged Monday in a Redwood City, California state court, Facebook is accused of "collecting, storing and profiting" from the biometric data of more than 100 million Instagram users. More specifically, that biometric data relates to facial recognition technology.

The lawsuit claims that Instagram uses a face-tagging tool that use facial recognition to create "face templates," which are then stored in Facebook databases. It goes on to add that Instagram uses this tool automatically without obtaining a user's consent, even if the people in the images don't have Instagram accounts themselves.

Conspiracy theories about Jewish people “controlling the world” are to be explicitly banned from Facebook and Instagram for the first time, after the company announced an update to its content policies on Tuesday.

The ban on “certain kinds of implicit hate speech” would also include content depicting blackface, Facebook’s vice-president of integrity, Guy Rosen, said.

Facebook and Instagram already bar users from posting hate speech, broadly defined as “a direct attack on people based on what we call protected characteristics”, such as race, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

U.K. Enters Recession After Worst Quarterly Drop on Record

The second quarter drop follows a 2.2% contraction in the first, when the country began lockdown to try and curb the spread of the coronavirus.

THE UNITED KINGDOM'S economy shrank by more than 20% in the second quarter, marking the biggest quarterly drop on record and plunging the country into the worst recession of any major global economy due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The U.K.'s Office of National Statistics reported that the country's gross domestic product contracted by 20.4% from April to June of this year. It follows a 2.2% contraction in the first quarter, when the country initially went on lockdown to try and curb the spread of the coronavirus
