I'm getting a bit better at letting sleeping dogs lie — that is, not trying to awaken someone who isn't ready to be awakened. For the most part now, I don't argue and I don't try to introduce challenging new ideas. And yet today I was still inclined to test the water with a gentle, almost innocuous question to an acquaintance. I was a bit shocked by the speed of the pushback I got in return. It was only a tentative attempt to expand her thinking with nothing more than a brief, obtusely phrased question in an otherwise polite conversation. Her reaction made me wonder if they sense there is a wolf at the door, and I'm it. Almost like the door is buckling and they don't want to let the flood inside, so even a hint of a question sends them running in the opposite direction. Almost like the spell is breaking, and it scares them.
