Gov. Jared Polis on Friday extended an executive order requiring Coloradans to wear face coverings in indoor public places for another 30 days.

The order makes wearing a mask for everyone older than 10 mandatory through Sept. 13. Polis amended the executive order Friday to include an exemption for those conducting "life rites," in addition to religious services.

But resistance has grown as more states and municipalities enact requirements for face coverings in public. Masks have become a political flash point in the U.S. with President Donald Trump refusing to wear one except in rare instances.

Despite Polis' order, at least16 of the state's 64 county sheriffs have said they will not enforce the order. Most have said the order is a civil matter, not a criminal one.

El Paso County Sheriff Bill Elder initially said his deputies would not enforce the order, but clarified that in a video in which he said deputies would respond to trespassing complaints if someone entering a business refused to wear or leave when requested.
