I tend to believe they were blowing up a k-club container system hidden in the beruit port, but that's total speculation. There were higher than normal readings of radiation after the explosion and Q has mentioned The sum of all fears on numerous occasions. I'm not sure that the destruction of a small nuke (destroyed not detonated) would increase radiation levels, but it seems like your nanothermite would be an excellent way of destroying a nuke and burning off the radiation.
