A Rothschild’s Chocolate Bet Sours on Liquidation Plans
The Rothschilds have parlayed the proceeds of their banking empire into fine wines and artisan cheeses, but one branch of the clan is closing its business selling sugary goods.
The U.K. confectionary firm owned by Evelyn De Rothschild and his wife Lynn Forester is in liquidation, according to filings. Evelyn signed an order this month to wind-up London-based R Chocolate, which is expected to have assets of about 4,800 pounds ($6,315) after paying creditors.

Sir Evelyn first entered the chocolate business in partnership with the award-winning chocolatier William Curley in 2010, but having parted ways, Sir Evelyn is now oomphing it all up with the help of his daughter Jessica (who is based in LA and married to the filmmaker Sacha Gervasi), Ben Elliot (founder of the Quintessentially concierge service) and new head chef Christopher Dodd. There’s a micro-chocolaterie in Richmond (all cocoa is sourced from Original Beans), a boutique in Soho and this dreamy café, with its heavenly scent and piles of ganaches, Florentines and ingots. Lady Lynn is running late, so for the moment I have Sir Evelyn and a cup of first-rate hot chocolate.

As regards the American lunatic, he is dismayed by President Trump’s recent decision to overturn Barack Obama’s DACA act (the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), which protected the children of undocumented immigrants from deportation. “I mean, come on! America was created out of immigration. It’s racist. Isn’t it? I think he’s racist. The only reason he isn’t anti-Semitic is because his son-in-law is Jewish…” If the daca repeal strikes a personal note for Sir Evelyn, it’s not only because of his wife’s close friendship with the Clintons; or because his family are so commonly cited in the anti-Semitic conspiracy theories peddled by prominent Trump supporters; or even because all three of his children live in the US (Jessica, plus music mogul Anthony and eco-adventurer David).
