Canada and China: It’s complicated
The current state of relations between Canada and China are likely more fraught than they have ever been.
With a number of issues that seemed to stem from the Canadian arrest of Meng Wanzhou and the subsequent detaining and imprisonment of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, that spat has coloured all interactions between the countries since. Add to that, global geopolitical and business tensions have now been exacerbated by recent developments like the new security law in Hong Kong and U.S. President Donald Trump two recent executive orders to ban WeChat and TikTok, and it’s clear that these issues show little sign of subsiding.
To discuss these issues and how they are affecting Chinese Canadians, we are joined by Joanna Chiu, a Vancouver-based reporter for the Star who covers Canada-China relations and current affairs. She was previously a correspondent based in China for European media.

Barack Obama was trained in community organizing at the Industrial Areas Foundation that was founded by Saul Alinsky in Chicago. Hillary Rodham (who later married Bill Clinton) was also quite taken with Alinsky, having interviewed him twice during the course of writing her senior thesis on Alinsky methods at Wellesley College in 1969.
For them, socialism sounds and feels appealing, and the facts about socialism resulting in misery, repression, poverty, and death in every country in which it has been adopted are just an alternate reality that can be dismissed. They call this state of mind being “woke” which provides an ultimate virtue signaling status. But for most, being woke has come about not by reason and critical thought but by a combination of being coddled, brainwashed and living in an echo chamber that has bred intolerance and moral arrogance a powerful combination upon which Satan himself could hardly improve.
People who were comfortable with the perpetration of the highest crime against America of orchestrating a coup to abrogate the peoples’ vote will surely exploit the COVID-19 pandemic to engage in lesser crimes of myriad election fraud schemes to defeat Trump.

76 politicians, 178 celebrities and 7 sports stars: the scale of VIP child sex abuse inquiry
Some 261 celebrities and politicians, including sports, TV and music stars, are being investigated for alleged child sex abuse, police have revealed.
They are among more than 1,400 men suspected by police of being sex predators as the Home Secretary warned it is only the “tip of the iceberg”.
The rogues gallery includes 135 TV, film and radio stars, 43 musicians and seven sports figures as well as 76 politicians, the officer in charge of the issue has disclosed.
Hundreds of schools, religious institutions, children's homes and sports clubs are also implicated.
Chief Constable Simon Bailey said reports of child sex abuse were increasing on a daily basis and expected police to receive some 116,000 allegations before the end of this year.
The surge is partly a result of the Jimmy Savile scandal in 2012 and Mr Bailey warned victims will run “in to the thousands”.
He said superfast internet connections, such as 4G, are making it easier for perverts to groom children online and feared hundreds of thousands of youngsters have already been targeted.
The figures, from the new police coordinating hub Operation Hydrant, reveal for the first time the massive scale of inquiries in to historic and current sex abuse cases.
Speaking separately, Theresa May, the Home Secretary, told rank and file officers that the picture was the “tip of the iceberg”.
Mr Bailey, the head of Norfolk Police and lead on child sex abuse for the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC), said the scale of child abuse was “stark".
"The referrals are increasing on an almost daily basis so the numbers I refer to today are a snap shot in time,” he said.
He said the figures suggested more sex abuse was being perpetrated.
Officers have identified 357 different institutions linked to the alleged abuse, including 154 schools, 75 children's homes, 40 religious institutions and nine prisons.
Forces have had to shift resources from other departments to focus on historic sex crimes.
Several celebrities have been convicted for historic sex abuse, including children's entertainer Rolf Harris, 85, and PR guru Max Clifford, 72.
But public confidence in the Crown Prosecution Service's (CPS) willingness to prosecute VIPs was shaken when it announced that it would not prosecute Labour peer Lord Greville Janner, 86, despite having enough evidence, because he has dementia.
Mr Bailey also warned the arrival of superfast internet is likely to see "more and more" abuse of youngsters, including the live-streaming of abuse on the internet. He said predators have attempted to groom hundreds of thousands of children in Britain through internet sites and chat rooms.
"We assess there might be 50,000 people who are viewing indecent images of children online,” he said.
Speaking at the Police Federation annual conference in Bournemouth, Mrs May said: “We will need to face up to the changing nature of crime and the impact on police forces, including the much greater reporting of previously ignored or under-reported crimes such as child sexual abuse.
"I have said before that what we are seeing is only the tip of the iceberg.
"So let me be clear, I am committed to ensuring the police have the resources they need to investigate these appalling crimes and bring perpetrators to justice."
But Jon Brown, the lead on tackling sexual abuse at the NSPCC charity said: "There is not enough provision, and as far as adult survivors of abuse are concerned it is extremely patchy.”

Barack Obama accuses Trump of attempting to 'actively kneecap' the US Postal Service to suppress mail-in votes
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2020/08/14/obama-says-trump-trying-actively-kneecap-postal-service/5586863002/
WASHINGTON – Former President Barack Obama criticized President Donald Trump on Friday for attempting to stall funding for the U.S. Postal Service, a move that Obama said "is unheard of."
In a podcast with former campaign manager David Plouffe, Obama directly criticized the Trump administration for what is happening at the USPS.
"What we've seen in a way that is unique to modern political history is a president who is explicit in trying to discourage people from voting," Obama said. "What we've never seen before is a president say, 'I'm going to try to actively kneecap the Postal Service to encourage voting and I will be explicit about the reason I'm doing it.'"
Obama added: "That's sort of unheard of, right? And we also have not had an election in the midst of a pandemic that is still deadly and killing a lot of people and we still don't know the long-term side effects of contracting the illness.”
The 44th president is referencing ongoing negotiations between Democrats and the White House on the latest coronavirus relief legislation on Capitol Hill.
Trump has offered conflicting statements about whether he opposes supplementary funding for the USPS, which has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic.
The president has suggested that a deal isn't going to happen and pointed a finger at Democrats for demanding $3.5 billion for mail-in voting, which he argued would perpetuate voter fraud, and for pushing for an additional $25 billion for the Postal Service.
Trump has repeatedly railed against mail-in ballots heading toward November, calling them, with scant evidence, unsafe and untrustworthy, as COVID-19 forces many Americans to stay home and vote by mail.
Additionally, Louis DeJoy, who was named postmaster general in May by the the Postal Service’s board of governors, who are appointed by the president, has been mired in controversy following sweeping changes at the agency.
DeJoy was a significant major Republican and Trump donor. Some of the changes implemented at the Postal Service include eliminating overtime, dramatically restructuring the organization and removing or reassigning nearly two dozen agency leaders. It was also reported that the USPS is removing some mail sorting machines, which would sort mail-in ballots, from its facilities around the country.
Some of these changes have caused significant mail delays in parts of the country, raising alarms that the anticipated influx of mail-in voting in November may be impacted.
Obama also said that Trump is "throwing in this additional monkey wrench trying to starve the Postal Service."
"My question is what are Republicans doing where you are so scared of people voting that you are now willing to undermine what is part of the basic infrastructure of American life?" Obama said.

I don’t know if an evil that is much darker than people that are trafficked. That’s why we’re not leaving the fight, only getting deeper. And when a young girl has been trafficked over and over and over again, finally realizes that she’s valuable. Not because of her body, but she’s valuable because of her worth, her inherent God-given worth. That changes a life. But I would say just like anything, some of them hit you harder than others.

Ex-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick accused of running sex ring from NJ beach house
Disgraced ex-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick allegedly ran a sex ring out of his New Jersey beach house — where one victim claims he was molested by him and three other priests, according to a new lawsuit.
The victim — “Doe 14” — says the alleged abuse began when he was 14 during overnight stays at McCarrick’s Sea Girt home in 1982.
“In the night, with the assistance of others, McCarrick would creep into this kid’s bed and engage in criminal sexual assault of him, whispering, ‘It is OK,'” Jeff Anderson, the attorney for the now-53-year-old victim, said at a virtual press conference Wednesday.
Other priests allegedly served as part of a “crew” of procurers of young boys for then-Bishop McCarrick, who “assigned sleeping arrangements, choosing his victims from the boys, seminarians and clerics present at the beach house,” the suit says.
Some of the other boys who were allegedly brought to McCarrick’s home were “assigned to different rooms and paired with adult clerics,” according to the complaint.
The victim claims he was also abused at the beach house by priests Gerald Ruane, Michael Walters and John Laferrera. The three men were among a list of 188 clergy members in New Jersey accused of sexual misconduct, NJ.com reported. Ruane is dead, while the other two were listed as “permanently removed from ministry.”
The suit was filed Tuesday night in New Jersey Superior Court in Middlesex County against the Diocese of Metuchen, the Archdiocese of Newark — where McCarrick served as bishop and archbishop, respectively — and several New Jersey schools the victim attended.
The victim is described as having been raised in a devout Roman Catholic family and a former student at St. Francis Xavier in Newark and Essex Catholic in East Orange.
He also claims he was sexually abused as an 11-year-old altar boy at St. Francis Xavier by the Rev. Anthony Nardino, who was employed at the school, and later molested by Brother Andrew Thomas Hewitt at Essex Catholic, where he was principal.
Hewitt died in 2002, according to an online obituary. Nardino, who has not been publicly accused before, has left the ministry, according to NJ.com.
Anderson said decades of alleged sexual abuse have been covered up by the Catholic Church.
“All of it cloaked in papal power,” he said.
Last year, Pope Francis defrocked McCarrick, 90, after a church investigation found he sexually abused minors and adult seminarians.
Sexual abuse allegations against McCarrick have been leveled before, including by James Grein, the first child he baptized. Grein said McCarrick — known as Uncle Ted — began molesting him at age 11.
The Archdiocese of Newark didn’t immediately comment.
Its spokeswoman, Maria Margiotta, told NJ.com, “It would be inappropriate to discuss or comment on matters in litigation. The Archdiocese of Newark remains fully committed to transparency and to our long-standing programs to protect the faithful and will continue to work with victims, their legal representatives and law enforcement authorities in an ongoing effort to resolve allegations and bring closure to victims.”
McCarrick’s lawyer didn’t immediately return a message.
Anthony Kearns III, spokesperson and chancellor for the Diocese of Metuchen, said the diocese was committed to preventing future sexual abuse.
“While we have not yet received the complaint, our prayers are with all survivors of abuse, today and always, and we stand with them in their journey toward healing and hope,” he said. “With God’s grace, all survivors of abuse, particularly those wounded by members of the Church, will continue to heal and move forward.”

Something tells me that Mr. Clinesmith knows where the bodies are buried, and if I were in the FBI working on Crossfire Hurricane, I'd be very worried right now.
