The founder of Snowflake AZ, William J Flake was a polygamist and a friend of the Romney's in Mexico. He was also raised by Amasa Lyman after his parents death.

The guy who dedicated the monument in Snowflake was named Faust, just like the guy in charge of the department of child safety in AZ who is named in the child trafficking lawsuit involving Paul Petersen. It's all one big inbred clusterfuck.

Everyone in town knew that William Jordan Flake had two wives. Flake, who helped establish the town of Snowflake, came to Arizona when members of the Mormon Church still practiced polygamy. However, the practice was frowned on outside the church, and a crackdown forced some church members, such as Miles Park Romney, great grandfather of former presidential candidate Mitt, to flee to Mexico. Others were sent to jail.

Flake stayed in Arizona and surveyed the legal landscape. A few church members, who had been tried before him, pleaded not guilty and were sent to prison in Michigan for three and a half years, according to an article in The Journal of Arizona History. So, Flake pleaded guilty and told the judge about his family. He was sentenced to 6 months at Yuma Territorial Prison.

Locals in the eastern Arizona town say that the day Flake was arrested, he invited the marshal in for dinner, and introduced him to both of his wives. They also say that, while in prison, he tried to be a positive influence on the younger inmates.

He was trusted by the prison officials, and sometimes took the Superintendent’s children fishing in the Colorado River. The Journal of Arizona History article lists a number of entries from Flake’s diary. There is no mention of fishing, but he does say he has more privileges than other prisoners.

“Some of the cons think it is worse to have more than one wife than it is to kill,” he wrote.

He was released June 5, 1885, and came home to a warm welcome.
