'Like the James Bond movies': Nashville airport debuts touchless ID tech with eye, finger scans

en Stockman was one of the first Nashville International Airport passengers to pass through security without flashing an identification card on Wednesday morning.

Instead, he stared briefly into a Clear kiosk that looks reminiscent of old payphone booths. It flashed red lights and displayed his name and photo before he was quickly ushered through to the security gate.

Nashville's airport became the 35th in the country to host Clear biometric identity scanners that rely on iris or fingerprint recognition on Wednesday.

"It's like the James Bond movies," said airport CEO Doug Kreulen. "As we get through the pandemic, everything's going to touchless so we don't have to exchange maybe contaminated documents. Clear is one of those options that people have. It's a neat option."

Most passengers are using the eye scan to avoid touching anything before boarding their plane.

Clear registration kiosks are stationed in the new north wing of the airport, and several company ambassadors wait nearby to guide customers through the process.

"Touchless travel is really the future," said Mitch Nadler, Clear's vice president of airport affairs. "Security and trust are paramount for us. We've built a brand over the past 10 years that customers trust. We do not sell or share customer data and we received the highest levels of certification in security that we can achieve."

Customers pay $179 per year – with discounts offered to frequent Delta and United airlines fliers – to skip the line before the security gates via Clear.

Now that airport traffic is light due to COVID-19 restrictions, the touchless option has become a brighter selling point.

Traffic at Nashville airport is down about 60% compared to this time last year, with an average of 18,000 passengers traveling daily. The airport was experiencing all-time high passenger counts in February before the coronavirus pandemic.

"Imagine when this airport is jammed full of people and you can just skip the line," said Clear Director of Operations Jeremy Langton. "We focus on expediting passengers and making this part of the process touchless."

Clear's technology is also used in stadiums, arenas and entertainment venues to move crowds more quickly and securely.

Now, the company is adding health screenings to its identification technology. Its "Health Pass" program allows users to upload their health information, including lab results, to their personal accounts for quick access.

"It's not only available in some airports, it's available in venues and Nashville could end up getting it at Bridgestone or Titans stadium," Kreulen said. "So you could show your fingerprints and that counts as your ticket and you can move on through pretty easily."
