Police seize nearly three tonnes of cocaine hidden in fruit at Rotterdam port

Police and customs officials have seized nearly three tonnes of cocaine hidden in three shipments of pineapples and bananas at Rotterdam port over the past three days. On Sunday night, they seized a tonne of the drug hidden in a container of pineapples from Costa Rica. The consignment was heading for a company in Barendrecht which probably knew nothing about the drugs, police said. On Saturday officials found 1.1 tonnes of cocaine in a shipment of bananas from Equador. Last week they had also found 743 kilos of the drug in another banana shipment from the South American country. The total street value of the drugs is around €213m, officials said. Customs officers seized twice as much cocaine in the first six months of 2020 than in the same period last year. More than 25 tonnes of the drug were intercepted in the Netherlands between January and June, compared to 12,000 in the first half of 2019, In April, 4,500 kilos of cocaine were found in a container of bananas from Costa Rica, in one of the largest drugs hauls ever recorded in the Netherlands. Rotterdam and Antwerp are known to be two of Europe’s main hubs for the international illegal drugs trade.

Russia says tracking device found in car of embassy worker in The Hague

Moscow has ordered the Netherlands’ acting ambassador to Russia to explain why a tracking device was apparently found in the car of a Russian diplomat in The Hague. The device was found in the car of the assistant to the Russian military attache, according to an embassy statement. The Netherlands, Russia said, had been told to take comprehensive measures to prevent such incidents happening in the future. ‘Unfriendly actions complicate the already difficult bilateral relations between the two countries,’ the statement said. It is unclear from the statement if Moscow thinks the Dutch placed the device in the car, or if the ambassador was summoned because the incident took place in the Netherlands. Prime minister Mark Rutte declined to comment on the claim and the foreign ministry said it is now investigating. The relationship between the Netherlands and Russia has been marred by a number of incidents in recent years. In October 2018, Dutch intelligence agencies said they had thwarted an attempt by Russian agents to hack into the wi-fi network of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, based in The Hague The Netherlands is also taking Russia to the European Court of Human Rights over the downing of the flight MH17. Two years ago, the Netherlands and Australia held Russia responsible for its role in the downing of the flight after a Joint Investigation Team found that the BUK missile which shot down the flight came from a Russian army brigade.
