Iranian Christian Couple Loses Appeals Against Prison Sentences

(Article18) — An Iranian-Assyrian couple sentenced to a combined 15 years in prison for teaching Muslim converts about Christianity have finally been informed that their longstanding appeals have failed.

It’s been more than three years since Victor Bet-Tamraz was sentenced to 10 years in prison, in July 2017, and over two and a half years since his wife, Shamiram, was given a five-year sentence, in January 2018.

Their daughter, Dabrina, who now lives in Switzerland, has spoken repeatedly of her fears for her parents’ safety, should they be forced to endure time behind bars, especially given recent reports of a coronavirus outbreak in Tehran’s Evin Prison

Mathematicians unravel a thread of string theory

Simply put, string theory is a proposed method of explaining everything. Actually, there's nothing simple about it. String theory is a theoretical framework from physics that describes one-dimensional, vibrating fibrous objects called "strings," which propagate through space and interact with each other. Piece by piece, energetic minds are discovering and deciphering fundamental strings of the physical universe using mathematical models. Among these intrepid explorers are Utah State University mathematicians Thomas Hill and his faculty mentor, Andreas Malmendier.

This process, Hill says, enables researchers to investigate symmetries of underlying physical theories demonstrated by the graph.

"You can think of this family of surfaces as a loaf of bread and each fibration as a 'slice' of that loaf," says Malmendier, associate professor in USU's Department of Mathematics and Statistics. "By examining the sequence of slices, we can visualize, and better understand, the entire loaf."

New polymer coating could help brains merge with machines — cyborgs incoming?

Scientists have developed a new bio-synthetic coating for electronic components that could help merge AI with the human brain.

They believe the polymer could overcome a fundamental challenge around connecting electronics to humans.

Traditional microelectronic materials, such as gold, silicon, and steel, cause scarring when implanted that disrupts the flow of electrical signals transmitted between computers and the body. But the new polymer could solve this problem, by providing a coating for components that connect to human tissue.

“We started looking at organic electronic materials like conjugated polymers that were being used in non-biological devices,” said study leader David Martin, a professor of materials science at the University of Delaware.

“We found a chemically stable example that was sold commercially as an antistatic coating for electronic displays.”
