Virginia state senator charged with 'injury' to Confederate monument in June protest chaos

A Virginia state senator has been charged with damaging a Confederate monument in Portsmouth during protests that also led to a demonstrator being critically injured when a statue was torn down, authorities said Monday.

Sen. Louise Lucas faces charges of conspiracy to commit a felony and injury to a monument in excess of $1,000, Portsmouth Police Chief Angela Greene said during a news conference. The protest occurred in June.

Lucas is a longtime Democratic legislator and a key power broker in the state Senate, joining the chamber in 1992. The charges were filed the same week Virginia lawmakers are taking up dozens of criminal justice reforms during a special legislative session.

The reaction from some of her fellow Democrats was swift.

"It's deeply troubling that on the verge of Virginia passing long-overdue police reform, the first Black woman to serve as our Senate Pro Tempore is suddenly facing highly unusual charges," Gov. Ralph Northam, a Democrat, tweeted on Monday evening.

The Golden State Killer, a former police officer in California who eluded capture for four decades, faces his victims in court Tuesday on the first of four days of hearings before he is sentenced to life in prison.

The scope of Joseph James DeAngelo’s crimes "is simply staggering,” prosecutors said in a court summary released Monday: 13 known murders and nearly 50 rapes between 1975 and 1986.

Sixteen of his Sacramento County rape victims plan to confront him Tuesday in a courthouse that is otherwise still sealed from the public because of the coronavirus. A similar number will tell Sacramento County Superior Court Judge Michael Bowman on Wednesday and Thursday how DeAngelo’s crimes changed their lives, before he is formally sentenced Friday.

Sioux Falls man faces more child pornography possession charges after more victims identified

A Sioux Falls man charged with child pornography possession faces additional counts after more victims were identified.

Christopher Robert Matson, 41, is facing seven counts of possession of child pornography and one count of taking or disseminating pictures without consent, according to an amended complaint out of Lincoln County.

Matson was initially charged with six counts of possession of child pornography, but additional charges were added on Aug. 13 after victims came forward, according to the Lincoln County clerk's office.

Matson is in custody on a $100,000 cash-only bond. According to a bond document, authorities found more than 80 images of child pornography.

'Ball is in Russia's court' on nuclear arms deal, U.S. says

VIENNA (Reuters) - The United States has informed Russia of its terms for extending a landmark treaty that limits their deployed strategic nuclear weapons and expires in February, and now it is Russia’s move, the U.S. envoy to arms control talks said on Tuesday.

Those terms include addressing what Washington says is Moscow’s build-up of shorter-range nuclear weapons that are not covered by the treaty, and making the verification system more robust, U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Arms Control Marshall Billingslea told reporters in a telephone briefing.

“Russia understands our position. And what remains to be seen is if there is the political will in Moscow to get this deal done. The ball is now in Russia’s court,” Billingslea said after the latest round of talks in Vienna with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov.

Washington has insisted that any deal to replace the 2010 New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) must include China, but Billingslea appeared to soften that stance, saying a framework would be built that “can include China in due course”.

The ‘mask gun’ works well with a mask being catapulted onto a person’s face before wrapping around the back of their head. The video shows how the mask fits nicely over Pan’s nose and mouth.

Despite repeated warnings from health experts, public health officials, and governments worldwide, some people still continue to resist mask requirements. Some city authorities have started taking action against people who flout rules. And there are some anti-maskers who have had indulged in disputes with essential workers who insisted mask requirement.

Findlay priest arrested on sex trafficking charges; bishop places him on administrative leave

Father Michael Zacharias is a pastor at St. Michael the Archangel Parish in Findlay. Officials say he has been engaged in sexual conduct with minors since the 1990s.

Zacharias, a priest at St. Michael the Archangel Parish, is charged with sex trafficking of a minor, sex trafficking of an adult by force, fraud or coercion, and coercion or enticement.

Officials say Zacharias was taken into custody on Tuesday at this residence without incident by members of the Northwest Ohio Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force.

It appears Zacharias celebrated daily Mass shortly before he was arrested.

According to the complaint, investigators are aware that Zacharias has engaged in sexual conduct with minors since the late 1990s. The Diocese said he was ordained a priest in 2002 and these are the first such allegations to be raised against him.

FBI Agent Eric Smith said Zacharias served at other parishes during his time as a priest, including St. Catherine's in west Toledo.

The FBI is encouraging anyone that has had contact with Zacharias where they may have been "groomed" for possible future sexual purposes, they were inappropriately touched or they were sexually assaulted by Zacharias to contact the FBI at 216-622-6842. In addition, the Diocese of Toledo encourages people to report any such allegation to the Diocesan Victim Assistance Coordinator at 419-214-4880.
