Once a seller downloads the Square Point of Sale mobile application, they can take their first payment. With its offering, a seller can accept payments in person via magnetic stripe (a swipe), Europay, MasterCard, and Visa (EMV) (a dip), or Near Field Communication (NFC) (a tap); or online via Square Invoices, Square Virtual Terminal, or the seller's Website. Once on its system, sellers gain access to technology and features, such as reporting and analytics, next-day settlements, digital receipts, payment dispute management and chargeback protection, and Payment Card Industry (PCI) compliance. On the consumer (buyer) side, Square Cash offers individuals access to a way to send and receive money. Number of employees : 3 835 people.

Jim McKelvey-co-founder, Square

Jim McKelvey is a cofounder of Square. He also cofounded LaunchCode, a nonprofit that helps talented coders get their first jobs at top companies.

In 2009, McKelvey co-founded Square with Jack Dorsey. Professor Robert Morley designed the hardware used by Square in 2009, while McKelvey and Jack Dorsey later created a separate entity leaving Morley out of this entity's ownership. McKelvey then served as Square's chairman until 2010. Today, McKelvey sits on the Board of Directors at Square. In 2012, McKelvey teamed with other St. Louis-based serial entrepreneurs to help found Cultivation Capital. The venture capital firm manages multiple early-stage venture capital funds in software, life sciences, and agtech. Cultivation Capital was noted by Crunchbase as an active venture capital investor. McKelvey was appointed as an Independent Director of the St. Louis Federal Reserve in January 2017.
