Surveillance video captures brutal unprovoked beating of 60-year-old homeless man in California
A 60-year-old man suffered a brutal and unprovoked beating in Twentynine Palms, California, and police are asking for the help of the public to find a suspect captured in the surveillance video.
Tim Richardson was sitting outside a 7-Eleven convenience store on Monday when a young man approached him and viciously stomped on him without warning.
Surveillance video captured the man walking out of a black car and then running back after the attack.
Richardson told KESQ-TV that he had never seen the man before and didn't do anything to provoke the attack. He said he wasn't seriously injured.
Residents of the neighborhood said that Richardson doesn't panhandle and often helps the small businesses by sweeping up for them. His friends want to find out who attacked him and why they did it.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said in a news release that they were made aware of the attack after it was circulated on social media. They are looking for a black male between 15-20 years of age and also the driver of the black Nissan Altima in which he fled.
A growing problem
Homelessness has become a major crisis in many regions across the country and some cities have responded with increased policing while others have turned to community-based programs to help the homeless.
In addition to economic difficulties, the homeless also face unprovoked and sometimes lethal attacks. One troubling incident in Chicago included four homeless men being stabbed in the neck as they were sleeping on the streets. One of those men died as a result of his injuries. A suspect has been arrested in that series of attacks.

US Postal Service Policy Changes Blamed for Deaths of Thousands of Baby Chicks
Poultry farmers in Maine are denouncing a massive increase in incidents of baby chicks dying en route to their farms, attributing the fatalities to operational changes recently implemented by the US Postal Service (USPS).
The USPS is vital for poultry farmers, due to the fact that no privately-owned companies ship live animals by mail. Since Maine has no hatcheries of its own, the state relies on shipments from other places to meet its poultry needs.
The chicks recently shipped via USPS mail that arrived dead have already cost Maine farmers thousands of dollars in losses, not to mention the sadness and unpleasantness of discovering such ghastly deliveries.
According to southern Maine newspaper the Portland Press Herald, last week, Pauline Henderson was aghast when she went to her local post office in New Sharon and picked up a shipment which was supposed to contain 800 live chicks sent from a hatchery in Pennsylvania.
Henderson, who owns and operates Pine Tree Poultry, a family farm and chicken meat processing facility that specializes in chicken pot pies, told the newspaper that all the chicks were dead upon arrival.
“We’ve never had a problem like this before,” stated Henderson on Wednesday. “Usually they arrive every three weeks like clockwork, and out of 100 birds you may have one or two that die in shipping.”
Henderson told the newspaper that the chicks shipped in the same amount of time they usually do; however, they appeared to have been mishandled while en route.
She added that thousands of birds that moved through the USPS processing center in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, also died, affecting several farms in Maine as well as New Hampshire.
Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, a major donor to both US President Donald Trump’s campaign and the GOP generally who was appointed to his position in May of this year, has decided to implement what Trump termed “changes” in recent weeks, claiming he aims to make the USPS more “profitable.”
Under DeJoy, the USPS has seen several operational changes, including cuts to sorting equipment and a proposal to end all overtime for employees.
Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-ME) said in a letter to DeJoy and Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue that she has received several complaints about poultry in her district.
“It’s one more of the consequences of this disorganization, this sort of chaos they’ve created at the post office and nobody thought through when they were thinking of slowing down the mail,” Pingree stated.
She added, “And can you imagine, you have young kids and they are getting all excited about having a backyard flock and you go to the post office and that’s what you find?”
At least 4,800 chicks shipped to Maine poultry farmers through the U.S. Postal Service have arrived dead in the recent weeks since rapid cuts hit the federal mail carrier's operations, U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree stated.
The USPS’ media contact for the Eastern US did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday, the Press Herald noted.

California Blackouts: It's Not Just the Heat, It's Also the Anti-Nuclear Power Stupidity
Activists oppose a huge source of reliable, climate-friendly electricity that could have prevented the rolling blackouts in the Golden State.
Rolling electric power blackouts afflicted as many as 2 million California residents last week as a heat wave gripped the Golden State. (It's apparently eased up for now.) At the center of the problem is that power demand peaks as overheated people turn up their air conditioning in the late afternoon just as solar power supplies cut off as the sun goes down. In addition, output from California's wind farms was erratic. Currently, about 33 percent of California's electricity comes from renewable sources as mandated by state law. Until this summer, California utilities and grid operators were able to purchase extra electricity from other states, but the current heat wave stretches from Texas to Oregon so there was little to none available to make up for California's power shortage.
According to the San Jose Mercury News, California electricity grid operators had warned in September 2019 that power shortages might become increasingly common when heat waves hit over the coming years. The current situation was thankfully not worse since California still has some natural gas power plants in operation that can be ramped up to supply energy when renewable supplies fail.
"Some folks in the environmental community want to shut down all the gas plants. That would be a disaster," said Jan Smutny-Jones, CEO of the Independent Energy Producers Association, a trade association representing solar, wind, geothemal, and gas power plants, to the Mercury News. "Last night [Sunday] 60 percent of the power in the ISO [Independent System Operator] was being produced by those gas plants. They are your insurance policy to get through heat waves."
Reuters reported that California's grid operators estimated that peak electricity consumption earlier this week might exceed available supply statewide by as much as 4,400 megawatts—roughly equivalent to the amount needed to power 3.3 million homes.
In a particularly obtuse report on NPR's Morning Edition today, Union of Concerned Scientists energy analyst Mark Specht asserted, "the solution is definitely not more natural gas plants. Really if anything this is an indication that California should speed up its investments in clean energy and energy storage."
NPR reporter Lauren Sommer followed up by observing, "After all, he [Specht] said climate change is making heat waves worse, so burning more fossil fuels to deal with that is somewhat counterproductive."
Completely ignored in the reporting is that California has been shutting down a huge source of safe, reliable, always-on, non-carbon dioxide–emitting, climate-friendly electricity—that is, nuclear power. In 2013, state regulators forced the closing of the San Onofre nuclear power plant that supplied electricity to 1.4 million households. By 2025, California regulators plan to close down the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant that can supply electricity to 3 million households.
The problem of climate change, along with the blackouts resulting from the inherent vagaries of wind and solar power, are an indication that California should not only keep its nuclear power plants running but also build many more of them.
