The novels are hard to categorize and have never reached the levels of popularity of his Narnia chronicles and satirical and apologetic works, but their over-arching philosophical project entails a profound meditation on the character of Western and world history over the previous 150 years but especially during the catastrophic, apocalyptic period 1914-1945. The novel deserves comparison with the more famous dystopias such as the Russian Evgeny Zamyatin’s We (1924), Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World (1932) and George Orwell’s 1984 (1949), and also the English Catholic-convert Msgr. Benson’s apocalyptic fantasy Lord of the World (1907); but it even merits comparisons with first-order philosophical-historical writing in the tradition of Thomas Carlyle’s The French Revolution (1839) and Alexander Solzhenitsyn’s Gulag Archipelago (1974) and with the history and philosophy of science as conveyed by Alfred North Whitehead, Pierre Duhem, and the great Hungarian refugee scholars Michael Polanyi and Stanley L. Jaki. The very width of its inter-disciplinary scope and depth of its philosophical-ethical penetration make it a hard book to categorize but are also characteristics of its importance and power as a work of metaphysical fiction.

Zoom educators call cops on virtual student

A Maryland fifth-grader got a visit from the police after his teacher called to report that she had seen a BB gun on the wall behind the student during a class video call. The boy’s mother, Courtney Lancaster Sperry, a navy veteran, wrote a Facebook post stating: “While my son was on a Zoom call, a ‘concerned parent’ and subsequently two teachers saw his properly stowed and mounted Red Ryder BB gun and one other BB gun in the background. He was not holding them and never intentionally showed them on video. In fact, he was oblivious that they could even be seen in the background.”

One of the teachers told the school’s principal, who decided to call the police to report the guns and ask that the home be searched. Hmm…have a warrant? Probable cause? Do teachers and principals now have the power of judges, juries, the FBI? (Ever notice that progressives disdain and eschew the police unless and until they want to use them to oppress those with whom they disagree?) When this country was lapping the world economically and defeating supposedly invincible foes like Hitler’s Germany and Tojo’s Japan—at the same time—nearly every kid had a Red Ryder BB gun and/or a .22 rifle…and a lot of them in rural areas brought them to school. That is when Uncle Sam had balls and was not “non-binary,” and when American citizens were unafraid of being disliked for…the right reasons.

Since her son was targeted by an “educator” who thought there was a scary-looking gun on her son’s bedroom wall, Sperry has been warning other parents about the lack of privacy during virtual classes. She stated that the principal and the teacher cited a rule stating that students may not bring guns to school and claimed it extended to virtual classes as well. She said that the school handbook does not address rules for virtual learning at all, and added, “he did not BRING anything to this meeting, and he is in his own home,” and noted (of the ‘guns’), “They were simply in the background in our home, safely stowed in a room behind a closed door, with no ammunition (if you can even call it that).”

North Korean elite troops deployed in layers at the Sino-Korean border

North Korea has deployed Special Forces soldiers and guards in four layers along the Sino-Korean border in Ryanggang province to prevent illegal crossings during the coronavirus pandemic and to keep watch over regular border guards to rein in on smuggling, sources from the area told RFA.

RFA reported earlier this month that the 1,500 Special Forces soldiers were deployed to Ryanggang on August 2. Their presence swiftly created a tense atmosphere among not only local residents but also border guards, who lost opportunities to squeeze bribes out of local traders.

“Since Aug. 5, we have quadrupled our border security over the North Korea-China border area in Ryanggang Province,” a military source in Ryanggang province told RFA on Thursday.

The source called the deployment a “four-point combat position” that organizes the zone near the border into four layered areas of surveillance responsibility.

The arrest of human smugglers leads to the discovery of 50 illegal aliens

U.S. Border Patrol agents and Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers disrupt a significant human smuggling operation.

Wednesday afternoon, DPS contacted the McAllen Border Patrol station and requested assistance with a vehicle stop in Mission, Texas. Agents assisted a trooper who stopped an unrefrigerated commercial box truck for a traffic violation. During the stop, the trooper observed 15 people attempting to conceal themselves in the cargo area of the vehicle. Agents determined all the subjects were illegally present in the United States. Additional information led troopers and agents to a home in Mission, Texas, suspected of operating as a human smuggling stash house. Troopers and agents discovered 11 additional illegal aliens inside the residence. DPS took custody of the driver and the box truck. Border Patrol took custody of the remaining subjects and processed them accordingly.

In the last three days, agents foiled an additional five human smuggling attempts that led to the arrest of the drivers and 23 illegal aliens.

Border Patrol processed the cases and subjects accordingly.
