Are you a regular Joe/Jane here for the first time? Here's a courtesy post that will get you up to speed on why this place is so appalling to your sensibilities. I'm not a veteran here, but I've been around some, so please consider this an incomplete analysis.

1- 8kun is the reincarnation of 8chan, a site once referred to as the toxic slime pit of the clearnet. 8chan grew out of 4chan, a more popular but somewhat more controlled image board site. The whole point, philosophically, is genuinely free speech.

2- Hence anonymity. When your name is not attached to something it (theoretically) involves your ego less, and lets your post be evaluated on the basis of its content rather than source. If you fill out the name field in your post or sign it at the bottom, some of the regulars will tell you to "gtfo namefag"

3- Which brings us to the dominant culture of the chans, perhaps best understood as Troll culture. These sites are foremost occupied by people who spend too much time on the internet (guilty as charged there). Insults are sometimes terms of endearment here. Edginess, to some extent, is a sport here. This culture may be toxic, but understand it is not necessarily malevolent.

4- The last things to consider are the other entities that populate this board. Most obviously there are bots and other such AI, like any other popular social network. It's also speculated (and chances are honestly pretty good) that intelligence agencies and law enforcement are monitoring activity here and engaging this community. Be aware this probably means some degree of provocation as a means of gathering intel, or as a means of steering the conversation away from sensitive interests.

Caveat emptor, omnia vincit veritas.
