During Joe Biden's presidential nomination acceptance speech Thursday night, both his personal YouTube page and the Democratic Party's YouTube page saw strong, negative reactions from live audiences. In fact, "Dislikes" outnumbered "Likes," in real time.
Yet both pages' "Dislikes" mysteriously dropped in the hours after the Democratic National Convention (DNC) had concluded. The changing statistics led some on social media to wonder if the Google-owned YouTube platform was protecting Biden.
The number of Democratic convention stream "Dislikes"or people pressing a button saying they did not like the content onscreendropped on Friday below where they stood on Thursday last night. The removed Dislikes could be a signal that YouTube is concerned about fake accounts or bots trying to influence the election or indicative of something else, experts said.

Michigan College Requires Students to Stay Within 5 Miles of Campus or Face Suspension, Tracks Them by App
Michigan's Albion College is attempting to create a "COVID bubble" on its campus as students return for the fall semester.
Students are being required to download a smartphone app that tracks their location and ongoing COVID-19 health data to help contain the spread of the coronavirus on campus. The college told students in an email obtained by Newsweek that they must have their location services on at all times. The "Aura" app will notify the school's administration if a student leaves the campus's bubble.
For the entire fall semester, students must stay within the campus's 4.5-mile perimeter or risk temporary suspension, according to the email. Members of the campus staff, however, are allowed to leave the bubble.

Hackers Leak Alleged Internal Documents Of China’s Social Media Surveillance
A hacking group claims to have breached three Chinese tech companies responsible for the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) social media surveillance Saturday, with the group attempting to blast leaked documents across social media.
The hacking group, CCP Unmasked, says it infiltrated the Knowlesys, Yunrun Big Data Service, and OneSight data firms, VICE reported. The group attempted to send the information out via its Twitter account, but the platform suspended their account under its policy against hacked documents.
“We think the public deserves to know about the CCP’s attempts to undermine democracy and freedom of expression,” the hackers said in an email to VICE.
“We don’t want to become the story and we want to protect ourselves. But we can tell you that we hacked the companies,” the hackers added. “And that we did it because we think the CCP’s desire to put out fake news and interfere with democracy needs to be challenged.”

Wells Fargo branch manager charged with money laundering
A Harlingen man was indicted by a federal grand jury in late July for allegedly using his position at a Wells Fargo branch to coordinate withdrawals from shipments of narcotics proceeds.
Stephen Roland Reyna was granted a $50,000 bond following a detention hearing before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ignacio Torteya, III on Friday. A warrant confirmed that Reyna was arrested on July 28.
According to court records, his bond hearing was delayed because the Willacy County Regional Detention Facility is adhering guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that recommends a 14-day quarantine for all new inmates.
Reyna faces one count of conspiracy to launder monetary instruments. The charge carries a penalty of up to 20 years in federal custody and a fine of $500,000 or twice the value of funds collected through the scheme that are subject to criminal forfeiture.

President Donald Trump’s implicit threat to put the National Guard on the streets of Chicago to tackle the city’s violence problem attracted widespread ridicule earlier this year.
But if the soldiers were instead wearing the sky blue helmets of United Nations peacekeepers there might not be such a problem, according to Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin, who flew to New York on Thursday to discuss what he described as a “quiet genocide” in Chicago’s black community with the U.N.’s assistant secretary-general for peacebuilding support, Oscar Fernandez-Taranco.
“The United Nations has a track record of protecting minority populations,” Boykin told Inc. before his meeting. “There was tribal warfare between the Tutsis and the Hutus in Africa, and they deployed peacekeeping troops there to help save those populations and reduce the bloodshed. We have to do something — black people in Chicago make up 30 percent of the population but 80 percent of those who are killed by gun violence.”
Asked how that might differ from sending in the National Guard, Boykin said, “The difference is, I’m not so sure that the National Guard is so used to peacekeeping and a peacekeeping role: The U.N. is trained in this.”

Saudi officials detained on corruption charges
Saudi authorities announced on Monday the arrest of Saudi citizens including a member of the Shura Council, a former judge, a notary, and a number of retired officers, as a result of their alleged involvement in several corruption cases.
The Saudi Press Agency (SPA) quoted an official in the Control and Anti-Corruption Authority as saying that “the authority has lately initiated (218) criminal cases.”
The body said that the most prominent case dealt with was “the arrest of a businessman in the eastern region and ten citizens, including a current member of the Shura Council, a former judge, a notary, a former bank employee, as well as a former police district chief, a former airport customs officer and a number of retired officers, who have not been detained for health reasons. The suspects were detained for paying and receiving monetary and in-kind bribes during their work, the value of which exceeds 20 million riyals [$5 million].”
It added that the director of Saudi port and a number of employees, including the director of public relations and head of the projects department, and two other staff members of the maintenance department, were arrested for exploiting their positions for personal gain, illicit financial benefits and money laundering by making deals via commercial entities, whose owners were also detained.
