Fast food worker who called himself 'local terrorist' cleared of plotting to attack army base with axes and drone
A fast food worker who called himself the "local terrorist" has been cleared of plotting an attack on an army base near his home using axes, knives and a drone.
Hisham Muhammad, 26, was accused of conducting a reconnaissance mission around the barracks of the Royal Fusiliers in Bury, Greater Manchester, posing as a potential recruit.
It was the same regiment in which Lee Rigby served before he was killed in a terrorist attack in Woolwich in May 2013, and his body was held there before his funeral in the town.
An earlier jury had been unable to reach a verdict and a second jury unanimously cleared Muhammad of preparing acts of terrorism and his cousin, Faisal Abu Ahmad, 25, of failing to inform police.
Muhammad had told the jury that he believed that Islamic State (IS) was a Western conspiracy to take away the rights of Muslims and he was only watching their videos to "find out the truth."

Police were alerted after Muhammad and Ahmad fell behind on the rent and their house in Bury was visited by the landlord.
Officers found the pair, who were originally from Bermuda, had been sleeping on mattresses in the same room, while one of the other rooms was used as a makeshift gym.

KFC will suspend its Finger Lickin' Good slogan after 64 years because it "doesn't quite fit" with coronavirus hygiene messaging.
The US fried chicken chain has released new images of advertising posters and packaging with the slogan blurred and pixelated.
All KFC restaurants in the UK were closed temporarily in March due to the pandemic but most have now reopened with stricter health and safety policies in place.
"We find ourselves in a unique situation - having an iconic slogan that doesn't quite fit in the current environment," said Catherine Tan-Gillespie, global chief marketing officer at KFC.
"While we are pausing the use of It's Finger Lickin' Good, rest assured the food craved by so many people around the world isn't changing one bit."
There are more than 900 KFC restaurants across the UK and Ireland, with 27,000 staff.

Navy Civilian Employee Pleads Guilty to Child Porn Charge
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A civilian employee of Naval Station Newport has pleaded guilty to storing hundreds of child pornography images on a Navy-owned computer drive, federal prosecutors say.
Donald Sly, Jr., 58, of Portsmouth, a civilian public works employee, stored a total of 487 images of child pornography in his directory on a computer drive used by Navy personnel throughout the East Coast, according to the U.S. attorney's office in Rhode Island.
Upon discovery of the images by authorities, Sly’s access to the drive was suspended. He later told Naval Criminal Investigative Service agents that he knowingly possessed the images of child pornography discovered on the computer drive, prosectors said.
Sly pleaded guilty Thursday to possession of child pornography.
He faces a maximum of 20 years in prison at sentencing scheduled for Nov. 13

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. – The Air Force doesn't have enough aircraft or range space for pilots to train for combat against a sophisticated enemy, so it's looking to link real and simulated environments at a new training center.
Pilots taking part in Red Flag air-to-air combat training exercises could soon face new virtual threats on top of those they're seeing in real life. That's one of the possibilities leaders see out of a new $38 million Virtual Test and Training Center here.
Maj. Gen. Chuck Corcoran, commander of the Air Force Warfare Center, said the center will prep pilots who could be called into a great power competition. Officials gave Military.com a tour of the new 60,000-square-foot center, which had its ribbon-cutting ceremony last week.
"There's no live training venue for the joint force and certainly for the Air Force that's big enough or that has the threat density that can replicate what China or Russia can do," Corcoran said. "So the live training venues … and testing venues we have, we have to do what we can on those, collect data, and then feed that into the virtual world and scale it to the size and scope we need."
