Dozens of schools host Confucius Institute despite new federal warning

Dozens of universities, including Columbia and Stanford, are hosting the Chinese government-funded Confucius Institute despite increasing scrutiny from the federal government.

Many elite universities with Confucius Institute programs appear to be unfazed by the Trump administration's decision last week to designate the D.C-based headquarters of the program as a "foreign mission"—a label the U.S. government applies to entities it finds to be directly controlled by a foreign power. Despite the announcement, nearly 50 colleges and universities will continue their partnership with Confucius Institute programs, which comes with up to $1 million in Chinese government funding.

The cushy partnership between American universities and the Chinese regime has restricted academic freedom on campus, frequently forcing administrators and faculty members to self-censor to avoid Beijing's wrath. While many universities rely on the organization to support Mandarin language classes and Chinese culture lessons, the program also bars its staff from discussing topics considered taboo by the Chinese Communist Party, such as the Xinjiang concentration camps or the Hong Kong protests.

Growing bipartisan criticism for the program has pushed more than 50 colleges and universities to cut ties with the Chinese government. In just the first eight months of 2020, 22 universities have eliminated chapters of the Confucius Institute—one more than the number of chapters shut down in all of 2019.

Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R., Tenn.), a consistent critic of the Confucius Institute in Congress, applauded the universities for ending their ties with the program but warned that the colleges might still find alternative means to partner with the Chinese government.

"I am pleased that some universities … have recognized the harm Confucius Institutes cause to higher learning," she said. "However, our work here is not done until every Confucius Institute is closed, even if they present themselves under another name or through another branch of the Hanban, and we must stay vigilant and flexible to keep up with Chinese tactics."

Texas Governor Mobilizes National Guard

At the order of Governor Greg Abbott, more than 70 members with the Texas Army, Air National Guards, and Texas State Guard with the Texas Military Department (TMD) have been activated and are prepositioning throughout the state of Texas ahead of Tropical Storm Marco and Tropical Storm Laura. Additional personnel remain ready to respond in impacted areas as needed.

Multiple Texas Army National Guard ground transportation teams with high profile vehicles are currently moving to support local and state agencies. Currently, UH-60 Blackhawks and UH-72 Lakota air crews have been alerted at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and San Antonio to assist with any emergency search and rescue or emergency evacuations. Additionally, Texas State Guard service members stand ready to provide assistance with local shelter and logistical operations in the affected counties.

“As Tropical Storms Marco and Laura approach Texas, the state is mobilizing the Texas National Guard to assist local, state, and federal officials in response to these storms,” said Governor Abbott. “As the situation develops, it is imperative that Texans who live on the Gulf Coast and in Southeast Texas pay close attention to weather alerts and heed warnings from local officials. Property and belongings can be restored, but lives cannot. 28-Year-Old U.S. Woman Busted at Mexican Border With Huge Haul of Meth

SALTON CITY, Calif. – El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the Highway 86 Checkpoint seized methamphetamine hidden inside of a vehicle Sunday morning.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:44 a.m., when a woman driving a black Nissan Versa approached the checkpoint. A Border Patrol K-9 detection team alerted to the vehicle in the primary inspection lane. Agents directed the vehicle to enter the secondary inspection area for further investigation.

While in secondary inspection, agents discovered 60 bundles wrapped in black electrical tape hidden inside of the vehicle’s floorboards, back seat and rocker panels. The white crystalline substance inside the packages tested positive for the characteristics of methamphetamine. The total weight of the methamphetamine was approximately 148.61 pounds with an estimated value of $334,372.

The driver, a 28-year-old United States citizen was placed under arrest and escorted to the detention area for further processing.

The woman, the vehicle, and methamphetamine were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Fury erupts outside Buckingham Palace as enraged crowds scream 'paedophile' at gates

WATCH the moment an enraged crowd of people gathered outside Buckingham Palace and appeared to chant "paedophile" repeatedly.

The footage is from a ‘Freedom For The Children Global Walk London’ protest that took place in London on Saturday. The footage has been viewed by more than three million people since it was posted on Twitter.

The protest reportedly started at 1.30pm on August 22 and involved the protesters marching to Parliament Square as well as Buckingham Palace.

Similar protests have been held in Liverpool and Manchester.

Protesters were encouraged to wear white t-shirts to the march.

'Freedom For The Children Global Walk London' took to Facebook to explain more regarding the protest.

The Facebook post said: "The purpose of this walk for change is to bring awareness to the current reality of child exploitation within our own communities and around the world.

"Let’s show our devotion and determination toward protecting these children, our communities most vulnerable, by requesting change and reformation within our government and law enforcement agencies to ensure that justice is brought in such a manner that it will significantly reduce instances of child exploitation while promoting awareness in order to end this ongoing issue."

One protester wrote on Twitter: "I was there. It was a peaceful walk followed by a group meditation starting at the London Eye on to the Palace then to Downing Street.

"Organised by ‘Freedom For The Children’ FB group for #EndChildTrafficking We had full police support."

New York Attorney General Sues Trump Organization At Start of RNC

NEW YORK – New York Attorney General Letitia James this past Friday took legal action in an ongoing civil investigation into the Trump Organization’s financial dealings. Attorney General James opened an investigation into Donald Trump and the Trump Organization in 2019, after Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, testified before Congress that Trump’s annual financial statements inflated the values of Trump’s assets to obtain favorable terms for loans and insurance coverage, while also deflating the value of other assets to reduce real estate taxes. At dispute are seven subpoenas which would provide the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) with thousands of documents and testimony from multiple witnesses regarding several, specific Trump Organization properties and transactions. Among other things, the action seeks to compel the testimony of Trump Organization Executive Vice President Eric Trump, who was intimately involved in one or more transactions under review, as well as the production of thousands of documents wrongly withheld.

“Nothing will stop us from following the facts and the law, wherever they may lead. For months, the Trump Organization has made baseless claims in an effort to shield evidence from a lawful investigation into its financial dealings,” said Attorney General James. “They have stalled, withheld documents, and instructed witnesses, including Eric Trump, to refuse to answer questions under oath. That’s why we’ve filed a motion to compel the Trump Organization to comply with our office’s lawful subpoenas for documents and testimony. These questions will be answered and the truth will be uncovered, because no one is above the law.”

For months, the Trump Organization has acknowledged the OAG’s authority to investigate the matters alleged, and has professed cooperation, but has refused to produce documents on invalid grounds. In recent weeks, Eric Trump has refused to appear entirely to give testimony pursuant to a subpoena, despite his being an important character in certain transactions.

These events led Attorney General James to, last Friday, file a motion to compel testimony and documents in New York County State Supreme Court. Attorney General James asked the court to order the Trump Organization to furnish witnesses for interviews and to provide documents regarding specific Trump Organization properties and transactions.

Trump Organization Properties Being Investigated

Seven Springs Estate: A 212-acre property in Westchester County, purchased by the Trump Organization in 1995. After efforts to develop the property were unsuccessful, the Trump Organization granted a conservation easement over 158 acres of the property in 2015.

40 Wall Street: A mixed use building in lower Manhattan that the Trump Organization owns an interest in. In 2010, the Trump Organization entered into a note and mortgage in connection with the property that was modified to have a total principal loan amount of $160 million — $20 million of which was personally guaranteed by Donald Trump.

Trump International Hotel and Tower Chicago: A hotel and residential complex in Chicago that was absent from Donald Trump’s “Statement of Financial Condition” in 2009 and in subsequent years.

Trump National Golf Club – Los Angeles: A golf course and clubhouse in Los Angeles owned by the Trump Organization. The Trump Organization donated a conservation easement over part of the property in 2014 and received a tax deduction for it.

Individuals and Entities That Have Not Sufficiently Answered OAG Subpoenas

Eric Trump, executive vice president of the Trump Organization: Was scheduled for an OAG interview last month to discuss his role in certain Trump Organization projects. Despite earlier agreeing to be interviewed by the OAG, Eric Trump now refuses to appear.

A land-use attorney who worked with the Trump Organization: A lawyer who worked with the Trump Organization in connection with the Seven Springs Estate.

Last Friday’s motion to compel was submitted under New York state’s Executive Law § 63(12), which gives the OAG broad powers to investigate fraud and illegality.

The OAG has reached no conclusions in this matter, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Norway’s largest private asset manager has decided to block investments in Exxon-Mobil (XOM), Chevron (CVX) and other firms that it says are not doing enough – or are actively promoting their opposition – to fighting climate change.

Based near Oslo, Storebrand said on Monday it also will prohibit investments in German chemical company BASF, Anglo-Australian mining giant Rio Tinto and American gas and electric utility Southern Co. (SO) since they lobbied against the Paris Agreement, which mandated the cutting of greenhouse gas emissions.

Storebrand had about $27.2 million invested in the five companies. The list of banned companies numbers 27. As of now, about one-third of all Storebrand's investments are fossil-free, the company added.

“We aim to be a leading provider of sustainable investment solutions,” said Jan Erik Saugestad, executive vice president of asset management at Storebrand. “With this strategy, we strengthen all the tools we as an investor have at our disposal. … Climate risk is one of the biggest challenges facing the world and investors. Therefore, investors must move large amounts of capital to companies that deliver solutions to the climate crisis – and away from companies that do not take climate risk seriously.”

Storebrand, which manages about $98 billion in assets, also vowed to have a net zero in greenhouse gas emissions from its investment portfolios by 2050 at the latest.

“We are concerned about the effect of climate change on ecosystems, societies and economies, and thus our own portfolio companies,” Saugestad added. “Fortunately, we also have significant influence, and can help accelerate decarbonization in the global economy.”

From now on, Storebrand will align its investments with “scientific consensus” and the “obligations of the Paris Agreement.”

As the Joe Biden campaign released a list of former Republicans who have endorsed the Democratic nominee for the November election, white nationalist Richard Spencer — an organizer of the Charlottesville riot and a former supporter of President Donald Trump — announced his support for Biden, as well. This endorsement is particularly embarrassing for Biden, since he claimed that he is running for president to “restore the soul of America,” specifically to repudiate Trump’s alleged support for the Charlottesville march.

Biden’s campaign rejected the endorsement, while Biden himself has yet to address it. Author and filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza argued that Spencer’s ideology fits better with progressivism, especially the Democratic President Woodrow Wilson, than it does with Trump.

“I plan to vote for Biden and a straight democratic ticket. It’s not based on ‘accelerationism’ or anything like that; the liberals are clearly more competent people,” Spencer tweeted on Sunday.

Early on Monday morning, Spencer tweeted a picture of himself with the message, “I’m on Team Joe!”

Biden has repeatedly condemned Trump for saying that there were “good people on both sides” of the Charlottesville demonstrations, often insinuating and outright claiming that the president praised white nationalists like Spencer. In reality, Trump condemned the white nationalists, explaining that he meant to praise the Americans who protested the removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.

Andrew Bates, rapid response director at the Biden campaign, rushed to condemn Spencer’s endorsement.

“When Joe Biden says we are in a battle for the soul of our nation against vile forces of hate who have come crawling out from under rocks, you are the epitome of what he means,” Bates tweeted at Spencer. “What you stand for is absolutely repugnant. Your support is 10,000% percent unwelcome here.”

CDC No Longer Requires 14-Day Quarantine For International Or State Travelers

The CDC Monday changed its quarantine requirement for travelers, no longer requiring 14-days to self-isolate after a trip.

The change in requirements was posted to the CDC’s website, which now reminds travelers to wear a face mask, social distance and wash hands frequently. The CDC noted, however, travel can increase the risk of contracting the coronavirus, but the agency no longer requires a 14-day quarantine period for international travel or for travel state-to-state.

The CDC said travelers are required to follow the safety guidelines and requirements issued by the countries and states to which they are traveling. Some states such as New York, Hawaii and Illinois have travel restrictions that require travelers to quarantine upon arrival.

“Some state, local and territorial governments have requirements, such as requiring people to wear masks and requiring those who recently traveled to stay home for up to 14 days,” the CDC said on its website. “ Check state, territorial, tribal and local public health websites for information before you travel.

“If you are traveling internationally, check the destination’s Office of Foreign Affairs or Ministry of Health or the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Consular Affairs, Country Information page for details about entry requirements and restrictions for arriving travelers, such as mandatory testing or quarantine,” the CDC added.

More than 23.4 million people have tested positive for the coronavirus globally, according to data from Johns Hopkins University, while more than 809,000 people have died from COVID-19.

Pro-abortion Erin O’Toole wins Conservative Party of Canada leadership race

O’Toole billed himself as a ‘True Blue’ conservative but made it clear that he supports a woman’s “right” to choose abortion

OTTAWA, August 24, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) — Pro-abortion Catholic Erin O’Toole was declared the new leader of the Conservative Party of Canada early Monday morning.

The tightly-fought race also saw the two pro-life candidates — rookie Ontario MP Derek Sloan and Toronto lawyer Leslyn Lewis — win a total 35 percent of the vote on the first ballot.

O’Toole, a 47-year-old father of two, lawyer, former member of Canada’s air force and Sea King helicopter navigator, and current Ontario MP, won a resounding victory over acknowledged frontrunner, former Harper-era MP and cabinet minister Peter MacKay on the third ballot.

He captured 59 per cent of the vote and 57 percent of the weighted points allocated to each riding, and made a strong showing in Quebec and the west.

Staunch pro-life candidate Sloan won 14 percent of the vote on the first ballot, and was thus the first to be eliminated.

Lewis, who garnered 25 percent of the vote and came first in Saskatchewan in the first round, fell off the ranked ballot on the second round, even though she had more votes than O’Toole. In the Conservative Party’s voting system, each of Canada’s 338 electoral districts is worth 100 points regardless of membership size. Points are assigned based on a candidate’s percentage in each district. A candidate must win a majority of points, 16,901, to win.

Canada’s national pro-life, pro-family political lobbying group, Campaign Life Coalition, which signed up 26,000 party members for the race, lauded the strong showing of Sloan and Lewis.

“The results show that social conservatives continue to be a major and irreplaceable part of the CPC base. In fact, with 35 percent of the vote on the first ballot compared with 16 percent in 2017 for Brad Trost and Pierre Lemieux, so-con influence has grown significantly since the last leadership race,” Campaign Life stated in a press release.

The party received a record-breaking 175,000 ballots, and its new leader “reveal” was delayed six hours because of a glitch with the machine opening the ballot envelopes. Media commentators regarded the robust results for Lewis, a Toronto lawyer who was largely unknown before the campaign, as the surprise of the evening.

They also contended O’Toole won because social conservatives ranked him as their next choice after Sloan and Lewis, although Jason Lietaer, president of Enterprise Canada, observed on Twitter that one-third of voters put neither O’Toole or MacKay on the ballot.

“That’s wild,” Lietaer said.

Lewis had 60,000 votes on ballot 2.

Oregon Dem Chains Himself to Mailbox in Campaign Stunt

Mail-in voting has been a hot topic leading up to the 2020 presidential election.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, Democrats have been promoting the idea of mail-in voting as a safer alternative, while Republicans — including President Donald Trump himself — are pointing out the potential dangers.

Oregon Democratic Rep. Peter DeFazio, chair of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, clearly isn’t concerned with any potential pitfalls. He chose to flaunt that fact with a bizarre political stunt.

“They’re trying to tear apart our Postal Service piece by piece. But Peter DeFazio is defending our right to vote (and every mailbox in America),” DeFazio tweeted this week, along with a short video clip of himself.

In the brief campaign ad, DeFazio is leaning up against a blue U.S. Postal Service mailbox on a street corner. A metal chain is loosely draped around his shoulders and wrapped around the body of the mailbox.

“They’re not getting this one,” DeFazio said.

DeFazio’s political stunt was likely an allusion to the conspiracy theory that President Donald Trump is controlling the mail system ahead of the general election to prevent people from voting via mail-in ballots.

There is no evidence to confirm that conspiracy theory.

It is true that some USPS mailboxes are being removed from the streets, but the reasoning behind their removal is far from sinister.

“First-class mail volume has declined significantly in the U.S., especially since the pandemic,” Ernie Swanson, a spokesman for the USPS, told The Oregonian earlier this month.

“That translates to less mail in collection boxes.”

Swanson explained that the decline has naturally led the USPS to remove “duplicate” boxes that are in close proximity.

Additionally, the USPS has a process in place for removing some of its mailboxes from street locations. It’s nothing new, and it’s not just in the state of Oregon.

Mailboxes being taken from Massachusetts streets are likewise not an unusual sight, according to Boston.com.

“USPS spokesman Steve Doherty told Boston.com boxes that are rusted, in need of paint, or tagged with graffiti are brought into the service’s shop for repair, and new ones are installed to replace them,” according to the outlet.

Almost 10 years ago WikiLeaks published the Iraq War Logs along with The New York Times, The Guardian, El Pais, The Washington Post and other news outlets. The logs showed the true numbers of civilian deaths in Iraq—at least 15,000 more people had died than previously thought—as well as the abuse and torture of prisoners by police and military in full knowledge of coalition forces. “

“The U.S. figures appear to be unreliable in respect of civilian deaths caused by their own military activities,” The Guardian reported. This online event was organized by the Don’t Extradite Assange campaign. It features WikiLeaks editor Kristinn Hrafnsson and investigative journalists Iain Overton and Chris Woods.

WikiLeaks’ Julian Assange remains held at a maximum security prison in London in relation to a US extradition request – he faces a sentence of 175 years for publishing truthful information in the public interest, which include the Iraq War Logs.

After the George Floyd incident in May, most of us were rightly indignant over the behavior of a handful of police officers in Minneapolis. And we could also understand the massive protests that took place for weeks immediately following that incident.

But those protests were summarily hijacked by Left-wing Marxist anarchists who couldn’t care less about George Floyd. It’s become obvious by now that two groups are primarily responsible for the violence, looting, theft and destruction — as well as the hare-brained “defund the police” movement — that is roiling through our biggest cities: Antifa and Black Lives Matter.

Well, it turns out that this mayhem not only isn’t random, but it was planned in advance, and the Obama-Biden administration had a huge hand in it. And wouldn’t you know it — Ukraine plays a big role in all of this.

Investigative journalist George Eliason, an American who is currently living in Ukraine, has connected a lot of dots implicating the previous administration in a sinister plot to disrupt the civil society in America and not only drive President Donald Trump from office, but also usher in a form of government that, were they alive today, our founders would once again rebel against.

Skepticism about the Bannon Indictment

Joe Biden’s campaign spokeswoman could barely contain her glee at the news that Steve Bannon is being indicted by the Southern District of New York on a variety of fraud allegations related to fundraising for “We Build the Wall,” telling USA Today that “no one needed an indictment to know that Steve Bannon is a fraud.” But a close reading of the indictment shows that the politicization of the DOJ by elements of the radical left has been its own long-running fraud.

A good friend of mine and former employer, Congressman Steve Stockman, received a federal ten-year prison sentence for crimes he did not commit, in a trial that was a circus. He received horrible legal counsel at trial because most federal criminal defense attorneys are not prepared for a political trial. Similarly, Gen. Michael Flynn pled guilty on the advice of counsel to crimes he did not commit due to a setup that uncovered notes now revealed was instigated by former President Obama while in office, and he struggles now simply to have the charges dismissed even though the prosecutors are on his side. The federal judicial process is so broken for defendants caught in its web that it often seems to even the innocent that the only option is to accept any plea.

The plea rate in federal criminal cases is 95%, the conviction rate for the few cases that go to trial is similarly around 95%. The conviction rate in the Soviet Union was only four points higher.

During the Stockman trial, I saw the federal prosecutor’s tactics up close. I saw them threaten people to comply with their demands to testify or else they would face prosecution. When I wouldn’t talk to them, as an attorney involved in the case, they called the Sheriff on my wife when they knew I was out of the house, asking for the locals to investigate possible child endangerment. I knew people who had years of tax problems that mysteriously went away once they testified the right way. These are the tactics they deploy regularly to get the testimony they want, guaranteeing the sky-high conviction rate.

As an attorney, I regularly interact with people who have varying degrees of knowledge about the law. Many know that specific crimes have specific elements that have to be met before you are guilty of a crime. You can’t be guilty of an assault if there was no contact and someone didn’t perceive the threat, for example. But for federal fraud, interestingly, there are no elements. Federal fraud also has no model jury instructions, because courts want prosecutors to have the flexibility to capture complex schemes. The effect of this fluidity, then, is to empower prosecutors who want to go after someone for political reasons, to have the disposable catch-all law to do it with, since federal fraud effectively becomes any financial transaction that federal prosecutors don’t like.

Remember when the 'experts' warned that there was no credible evidence of coronavirus reinfection, claiming the notion that patients can be reinfected with the virus is categorically absurd? Well, since then, it looks like the New York Times has published stories arguing everything from 'reinfection is so rare as to make it a non-issue', to signs that 'lasting protection might be elusive for some'.

It's just one more sign of how little scientists know about the virus, and the latest reminder that projections for workable mass-produced vaccines that are also "safe" is an incredibly high bar to set before the end of the year.
