a retired marine - at 27?

Larimer park ranger found dead in Horsetooth Reservoir identified as Windsor High School graduate, retired Marine

A Larimer County park ranger and Windsor High School graduate who previously served as a Marine was found dead this past week in Horsetooth Reservoir in what has been ruled an accidental drowning.

On Sunday, the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office released more details in a video statement about the drowning death of 27-year-old Brendan Unitt, who was found dead early Friday morning after multiple Colorado agencies searched for him for hours.

On Thursday evening, following unexpected heavy wind gusts of up to 35 mph, two visitors at Horsetooth Reservoir called for help near Soldier Canyon Dam. Unitt was on boat patrol at the reservoir that evening, a regular duty for him since starting with the Department of Natural Resources about six months ago.

Rangers heard broken radio traffic later believed to be Unitt, according to Larimer Sheriff Justin Smith. Other rangers launched a second boat to rescue the two visitors and helped them to safety.

About 9:18 p.m. Thursday, the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office was notified Unitt was missing as rangers began searching for him. They found his boat near the eastern shore of the reservoir, just down from Rotary Park, but the boat was unoccupied.

A short time later, the kind of life jacket that’s issued to rangers was discovered directly across the reservoir, on the beach. Searchers focused on that area, but nothing else was found until after 3 a.m. Friday.

A Colorado Parks and Wildlife boat equipped with sonar found Unitt’s body in about 12-13 feet of water. His body was recovered.

Ronnie Lopez, Phoenix powerbroker and Latino advocate, has died

Ronnie Lopez, who rose from the mountainous mining town of Miami to become a top powerbroker in Democratic politics in Phoenix and a mentor to hundreds of young people, has died.

Lopez was 73.

He died at his home in north-central Phoenix, his goddaughter told The Arizona Republic.

Lopez was best known for a wise lesson to his compadres, from the late Rep. Ed Pastor, D-Ariz., to young people trying to break through in politics: The biggest gift you can give is of your time.

Lopez caught the eye of Babbitt, then Arizona attorney general. They became fast friends and Lopez joined Babbitt's staff in 1978, when Babbitt became governor.

"If anyone had the blessing of hanging out with Ronnie Lopez, it will always be remembered as one of the best nights of your life,” said Rep. Greg Stanton, D-Ariz., a former Phoenix mayor who spent a lot of time on Lopez’s back porch.
