Maybe he just wanted to hide the knife sho he didn't violate, maybe he wanted to hide something else they would find in a bodily search. There's about a hundred other reason it could be. Again, why let him get to his car? Why let him open the door? Something about it all seems staged. If not, the cop is a coward.
