Iran says blast at Natanz Nuclear Facility was ‘sabotage’
Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization said an explosion at the country’s main nuclear facility in July was caused by sabotage.
“The explosion at Natanz nuclear facility was a result of sabotage operations. Security authorities will reveal in due time the reason behind the blast,” spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi told state TV channel Al-Alam on August 23.
Iran said after the July 2 incident that the cause of the blast had been determined, but it declined to release details due to security concerns.
There has been speculation of possible sabotage as Iranian officials struggled to explain what happened and sought to downplay the extent of the damage.

Austria Expels Russian Diplomat Suspected of Industrial Espionage
Austria has for the first time in its relations with Russia declared a Russian diplomat persona non-grata on suspicion of industrial espionage.
The unnamed diplomat has until Sept. 1 to leave the country, the tabloid Kronen Zeitung reported Monday.
“The Russian diplomat had carried out economic espionage in a high-tech company for years with the support of an Austrian citizen,” Kronen Zeitung wrote without citing sources.
The Russian diplomat reportedly invoked his diplomatic immunity and refused to testify after the Austrian citizen named him as his senior officer during an investigation.
Austria’s foreign ministry later confirmed the expulsion, telling the state-run TASS news agency that “the diplomat’s behavior contradicts the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations” without providing further details.

Iranian forces seize US-made weapons being smuggled across western border
BEIRUT, LEBANON (3:00 P.M.) – The Iranian border guards in the Western province of Kermanshah discovered and seized tens of U.S.-made guns from smugglers.
“After receiving tips on a possible transit of a weapons and ammunition cargo by smugglers into the country, a team of border guards and intelligence forces at Salas Babajani border area were immediately sent to Chafteh border checkpoint (in Kermanshah province),” an informed source told Fars News on Monday.
The Fars News source said that the border guards traced the smugglers with the help of electro-optical equipment as they were crossing the borderline, noting that the smugglers who faced the Iranian forces’ rapid action left the cargo and fled the mountainous region to the other side of the border.
According to the source, 33 U.S.-made guns were discovered and seized in the operations.
In a relevant development on Sunday, Commander of Iran’s Border Guards Brigadier-General Ahmad Ali Goudarzi said that his forces in Saravan region in the Southeastern province of Sistan and Balouchestan had killed a notorious terrorist and wounded several militants in armed clashes.
