GOP Senators Demand FDA Explain Hydroxychloroquine Stance Amid Positive Studies And Physician Advocates

The debate over hydroxychloroquine has faded from the forefront as big tech has worked to suppress information and silence the voices of doctors and researchers promoting it. However, it appears the controversy over the drug has encouraged some senators to take a closer look, and it seems they are asking the FDA the right questions.

Senators Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), Ted Cruz (R-Texas), and Mike Lee (R-Utah) sent a letter to FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn explicitly asking about the agency’s handling of information regarding the drug and its use during the pandemic.

Doctors and researchers advocating for hydroxychloroquine are recommending it be used in high-risk outpatients.

Texas Congressman Louis Hohmert, who was recently diagnosed positive for COVID-19, tweeted just this morning about the benefits of hydroxychloroquine:

Hydroxychloroquine protocols worked for me. Americans suffering from the Wuhan Virus deserve the right to consult with their doctors and try HCQ if deemed a safe and appropriate fit. Keep Big Govt out of this. Thank you Dr. Risch for your work and research on this.

In the letter to Hahn, the senators are asking about specific actions the agency has taken regarding hydroxychloroquine. The current FDA guidance is that it should not be used outside the hospital setting for COVID-19, and the Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) has been withdrawn. Given the safety profile of the medication and the fact it is used daily on an outpatient basis around the world for malaria prevention, malaria treatment, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus, this guidance is ridiculous on its face.

The recommended duration of hydroxychloroquine treatment for COVID-19 is between five and seven days at FDA approved dosages. In a sane world, a doctor may prescribe drugs off-label at approved dosages if they think a medication may be useful for a patient’s symptoms. However, 2020 is not sane, and now the FDA interference has led to medical boards, hospital systems, and politicians banning the use of hydroxychloroquine for COVID-19. These actions are unprecedented in the doctor-patient relationship.

Finally, these senators are standing up for that relationship and demanding clarity from the FDA. From the letter:

However, we have heard from licensed physicians that have had a far different experience with the FDA’s approach. The physicians are concerned about the FDA’s decision to revoke the March 28th EUA for HCQ and CQ for treatment of COVID-19. They have described the clear differences between inpatient and outpatient treatments and how this decision has affected their ability to treat patients in different settings. The physicians have warned that the FDA’s EUA revocation of HCQ and CQ has led to misinformation and confusion across the country. Some states have restricted the ability of physicians to write and pharmacies to fill HCQ and CQ prescriptions under longstanding and well-established authority to prescribe FDA approved drugs off-label with a patient’s informed consent and according to their clinical judgement.

Nearly Five Million Americans Became Gun Owners in First Half of 2020

Record-setting year for gun sales could play major role in presidential election

Nearly five million Americans became first-time gun owners in 2020, according to a new report.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the gun industry's trade group, estimates that 17.1 million guns have been sold between January and August with 4.84 million Americans purchasing their first guns. The sales—especially to new owners—represent a significant shift in American attitudes on gun ownership.

"This is a tectonic shift in the firearm and ammunition industry marketplace and complete transformation of today’s gun-owning community," Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF senior vice president and general counsel, said in a statement.

Wex Gunworks in Delray Beach, Fla., has been "slammed" with demand from first-time buyers, according to owner Brandon Wexler. Wexler attributed the surge—which threatened to cause supply shortages—to uncertainty fostered by the coronavirus pandemic and rioting in cities across the country.

"Since the eruption of Covid-19 and the age of protests new gun owners have flocked to the shop to buy firearms, accessories, and get firearms training," Wexler told the Washington Free Beacon. "We were slammed up through about six weeks ago, then inventory dried up from a manufacturing standpoint."

New buyers could represent a political boon for gun-rights groups and pro-gun politicians in the coming months or years. Some gun-rights groups have already seen memberships spike. The NRA, which is supporting President Trump's reelection, claims to have added 1,000 new members per day through the months of June and July. Another recent NSSF survey indicated that black Americans and women were among the fastest-growing demographics for new buyers. If gun-rights activists are able to make inroads with groups of Americans who have traditionally favored more gun control, the effect on November's election could be especially significant.

"These first-time buyers represent a group of people who, until now, were agnostic regarding firearm ownership," Keane said. "That’s rapidly changing, and these Americans are taking hold of their God-given right to keep and bear arms and protect themselves and their loved ones."

To determine the number of new owners, NSSF said it combined their gun sales estimate with a recent dealer survey. The group said it expects gun sales to continue to boom in the second half of 2020 due to the political environment surrounding the 2020 elections—especially the aggressive gun-control policies proposed by Democratic candidates.

"Firearm sales typically rise during presidential election years," NSSF said in a statement. "Democratic candidates Joe Biden and U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris (D., Calif.) are calling for stringent gun-control measures, including forcible confiscation, banning entire classes of firearms from lawful possession, licensing schemes and repealing the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, which would expose the firearm industry to frivolous and harassing lawsuits."

IDF launches airstrikes on Hamas targets in southern Gaza

The attacks were in response to the continued launching of incendiary balloons into Israel from the Hamas-controlled coastal enclave.

The IDF launched airstrikes on Hamas targets in the southern Gaza Strip near Khan Yunis in the early hours of Wednesday morning, confirming earlier media reports.

The attacks, which struck Hamas infrastructure, were in response to the continued launching of incendiary balloons into Israel from the Hamas-controlled coastal enclave.

"IDF fighter jets and aircraft recently attacked underground infrastructure belonging to the Hamas terrorist organization in the southern Gaza Strip," the IDF said in a statement.

"The attack was carried out in response to the explosion of incendiary balloons and arson from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory during the day."

The military added that it was conducting an ongoing situational assessment, and would act "with firmness and determination against any attempt at terrorist activity against the citizens of the State of Israel and the violation of its sovereignty."

Nearly 30 fires broke out in the Gaza Envelope region on Tuesday due to the continued launching of incendiary balloons.

The current wave of balloon terrorism has been going on for several weeks now, with Israeli airstrikes failing to significantly deter further launches. Other methods of deterrence have been employed as well, such as shutting off the flow of goods and supplies into the Strip through various border crossings with Israel, as well as preventing Gazan fishermen from fishing.

Efforts have been made by both Egypt and Qatar to mediate in an attempt to prevent further hostilities, but these have so far been unsuccessful.
