Tess Holliday's Strawberry Dress Sparks Debate on Thin Privilege

Paper Magazine

It's been declared the "dress of the summer" by Vogue and the New York Post, but not everyone is taking its rising popularity at face value. Tess Holliday, who wore a custom version of the famous "strawberry dress" by Kosovo-based designer Lirika Matoshi to the Grammys this year, is not impressed by the sudden fascination with the feminine frock.

"I like how this dress had me on worst dressed lists when I wore it in January to the Grammys, but now bc a bunch of skinny ppl wore it on TikTok everyone cares," she wrote on Instagram and Twitter.

"To sum it up: our society hates fat people, especially when we are winning."

Google searches for the style started to pick up steam earlier this summer after the dress became ubiquitous on TikTok, particularly when users paired their videos with a song called "Strawberry Blonde" by Mitski. Despite its $490 price tag, the abundance of pink tulle, ruffles and red sequin strawberry embellishments have made it a smash with the "cottagecore" crowd.

Holliday acknowledged that some people praised her Grammys dress at the time (a quick online search shows her red carpet look was featured in many best-dressed lists), but it nevertheless raised some questions as to how society's sudden fascination with the dress (and, by association, its thin wearers) is part of an ongoing problem in the industry with how it treats people who aren't the ideal body size.

"I'm aware some people said I looked nice in my grammys dress & I never said I didn't make best dressed lists as well as WORST dressed," she tweeted, "but y'all are purposely ignoring the important part of my post: SOCIETY TREATS FAT PEOPLE LIKE WE ARE INVISIBLE."

The strawberry midi dress, which goes up to a size XXL, is currently the best-selling item from Lirika Matoshi and is available now on its site.

#goBaldForBLM

An amusing revelation was made following a 4chan troll posting the suggestion to trick young women into supporting Black Lives Matter–by shaving their heads.

As a result, the

hashtag #goBaldForBLM emerged

with several young women expressing their solidarity with the global political movement, taking social media by storm.

In an anonymous 4chan post, the original poster wrote: “Get #goBadlforBLM trending on Twitter and Instagram. The idea is to get women, particularly white women, to shave their heads for BLM. Guilt them into getting rid of their straight “white” hair to show”solidarity” with black women.”

To comedic effect, the troll appears to have paid off, becoming another one of many plans hatched on the controversial online message board to influence people into false movements.

One person wrote: “Today, I showed my solidarity for #blacklivesmatter by shaving my head in protest. #gobaldforblm. I feel amazing.”

Another participant wrote: “So I was going to shave my head again soon anyway but since #goBaldForBLM was trending I thought NOW IS THE TIME! I can get behind this! I stand in Solidarity with #BlackLivesMatter and am free of my privileged hair.”

The hashtag began trending on Twitter, but many soon caught onto the hoax as some troll Twitter accounts posted fake images of women shaving their heads.

In April, after Bernie Sanders dropped out of the Presidential race, 4channers spammed Bernie Bros by hatching a fake scheme where they would take to social media to falsely thank the Vermont Senator for returning their campaign donations.

The idea of this troll was to have staunch Sanders supporters think that refunds were underway, when, in fact, there was no scheme in place.

Via National File:

The hacker known as 4chan has struck again: this time they were scheming a plan to troll Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) supporters into believing other Bernie Bros had received refunds, in an effort to cause an internet frenzy.

The general gist of the idea was to stoke confusion as many devout Sanders followers forked out the precious little that they had to back their loved Vermont democratic socialist.

Following the announcement Sanders was to suspend his presidential campaign, scores of disheartened Brocialists flooded social media with their tears as a second Democratic betrayal seemed to be on the cards.

4chan, as exploitative of big news as ever, hatched a plan to create hundreds of sock accounts to push a narrative–and algorithms–of supposedly content Bernie Bros who had been given refunds after dipping into their savings or deepening their student loans to throw some cash at the Vermont Senator.

According to the ever-insightful Anon, the plan was straightforward:

Simply, we flood Twitter with sock accounts thanking Bernie for returning our money.

Watch the panic ensue as the basedboys spam him for refunds

Twitter caught wind of the situation and advised authentic Sanders supporters to heed caution.

As ever, 4Chan is often quick to the punch in causing mischief over breaking political events.

[ Grimoires ] ANONYMOUS.

The Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses.; Moses' Magic Spirit-Art. Known as the Wonderful Arts of the Old Wise Hebrews, taken from the Mosaic Books of the Cabala and the Talmud for the Good of Mankind.

NP (USA): Egyptian Publishing Company, ND (circa 1920). Hardcover, Small Octavo, 190 pp. Original red cloth with black title, etc. to spine and front cover, silver and black design with serpent and sigil to front cover. Black and white illustrations. The volume is undated -but the design on the cloth and typography strongly suggest 1920s. The text is drawn from a mid-nineteenth century German language book, "Das sechste und siebente Buch Mosis," which was drawn from a variety of texts including Agrippa's De Occulta Philosophia, de Abano's Heptameron, Arbatel Of Magick, Sepher Raziel, etc. It purports to give instruction in the arts which Moses used to perform the various magical feats ascribed to him. The book was first published in English in New York in 1880, and evidently caught the popular imagination, as it has had a number of printings since. It is obviously not a scholarly work, which may explain its popularity, but is interesting as perhaps the first Grimoire to really catch the popular imagination and enjoy a wide circulation in the US,for it soon became a significant source for many different magical traditions, including various forms of folk magick, African American root workers, voodoo practitioners, and others. Boards a little rubbed, with some light fraying to cloth at upper fore-edge of front board. Corners lightly bruised and chafed. A couple of tiny spots (tea drops?) on fore-edge an in text, otherwise a nice, clean VG copy (no dust jacket, believe none issued). Item #43000

ANONYMOUS.

The Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses. Or Moses' Magical Spirit-Art, known as the Wonderful Arts of the Old Wise Hebrews, taken from the Mosaic Books of the Cabala and the Talmud, for the Good of Mankind. Translated from the German, Word for Word, according to Old Writings. With Numerous Engravings.

NP: NP, ND [ Circa 1970s ? ]. Reprint. Softcover. Octavo. 190pp,b&w illustrations. Original printed wrappers. Despite the text being of relatively recent origin - most scholars suggest it first began to appear in manuscript form in the 18th century - "The Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses" is arguably one of the most influential of all the grimoires. It contains a series of magical incantations, spells and seals purportedly from the lost magical Books of the Biblical prophet Moses. The work apparently originated in Germany and then spread to America via the Pennsylvania Dutch, and their "pow-wow" books. It began to appear in print in the late nineteenth century, and became popular in the African American South and also in the Caribbean, and West Africa, making its mark on the Hoodoo, Rastifarian, and various African religious movements, as well as on European and American occultists. This anonymous cheap edition first appeared in the 1920s or 1930s and was reprinted many times. We don't know the date of this copy but suspect from its condition and the gloss of the covers that it is probably from the 1970s. From the collection of Clive Harper with his discreet book-label neatly tipped in at the rear. Harper is well- known as the bibliographer of Austin Osman Spare, for updating the Aleister Crowley bibliography in the 2011 Teitan Press collection of Gerald Yorke's writings, and as someone who has lent his expertise to numerous other publications. Light rubbing to covers, slight bump and crease to upper corners, pages browned (as common) - still a tight, clean and unmarked VG+ copy. Item #65974

The Bible says that you can't know God through the natural man (1 Cor. 2:14). We must go beyond our feelings and emotions and seek Him in the spirit. That's why we often feel unfulfilled or disconnected from God. We're listening to the flesh, not the spirit. This teaching will help you change that.

Every person deals with anger. There is no escaping it. But are we dealing with our anger the way God's Word instructs us to?

There is a type of anger that is godly, but even the more common, ungodly anger is very misunderstood.

It's not people and circumstances that make us angry. In this teaching, Andrew shares truths from God's Word on the subject of anger that are as rare as gold. An ungodly anger is the social norm today. Psychology's diagnosis of the cause and treatment for anger is totally off-base. God's Word tells us all we need to know to manage our anger in a godly way.
