US troops operating (illegally) in Syria tried to block Russian patrol despite being warned, Moscow says, after vehicles collide

The Russian Defense Ministry has said that US troops involved in a dangerous incident in Syria were informed beforehand of a military convoy moving into the area – but deliberately blocked its path, prompting a Russian response.

It's worth remembering that the Russian military is in Syria legally, under international law, whereas the American presence is illegal. Damascus did not attack the US, nor did it invite Washington to send troops.

Reports of Russians staging a "violent" fracas deep in northeastern Syria have been doing the rounds in US/UK media since Wednesday, when Politico first broke the news. Citing the customary anonymous sources, the outlet reported that four US military personnel had been injured when a Russian armored vehicle rammed an American one, leaving crew members with a "concussion-like" trauma.

Notably, the Pentagon stopped short of issuing an official statement, handing over that task to the National Security Council (NSC), a key government body, reporting to the White House. The storyline was swiftly picked up by other western media outlets, some of which quoted NSC officials who slammed Moscow for the "unsafe and unprofessional behavior" of its troops.

On Thursday, the Russian Defense Ministry offered own version of the events behind the altercation. Valery Gerasimov, chief of the Russian General Staff, reached out to his US counterpart Mark Milley through a direct line, reminding him that the coalition command had actually been aware that the Russian convoy was to pass through the area.

"Nevertheless, US military personnel attempted to block the Russian patrol, in violation of existing [safety] agreements," the ministry's statement offered.

Russian patrolmen were trying to avoid an incident as two US armored vehicles began chasing them, the defense ministry said in a statement on Thursday. Two more American vehicles then blocked the road, it added.

The Russian troops were left with no choice but to take "necessary measures to prevent the incident and further fulfill their duties."

Footage of the standoff popped up on social media, apparently showing several Russian armored trucks being shadowed by the US M-ATV vehicles.

In other videos, allegedly recorded on the spot, a military helicopter is seen roaring overhead as the standoff continues.

NFL Teams – The Jets, Colts and the ‘Washington Football Team’ All Cancel Practices to Focus on Social Justice Issues

The USAToday is reporting that at least three football teams are cancelling practices to focus on social justice issues:

Several NFL teams canceled practice Thursday to focus on social justice issues and protest the shooting of Jacob Blake, following decisions by the Milwaukee Bucks and other pro sports teams to not play the previous day.

The Indianapolis Colts, New York Jets and Washington Football Team were among the teams to cancel practice, announcing their decisions either Wednesday night or Thursday morning. Indianapolis and Washington both announced that they would instead spend the day discussing social justice issues and working toward change.

“Friday we can return to football. But (Thursday) will be about reflection instead,” Washington Football team coach Ron Rivera said in a statement Wednesday night. “In place of our practice at FedExField, the players, coaches and football staff will meet as a football family and we will continue our open dialogue on the issues of racism and social injustice in our country.”

Thursday’s cancellations come two days after a similar move by the Detroit Lions, the first NFL team to scrap practice to focus on social justice issues this week.

Of course, the Washington Redskins are now referred to as the Washington Football Team because they have to change their team name from Redskins to something else. Whatever they change their name to based on this reasoning will some day need to be changed again, because no doubt they will be offending someone somewhere with their new name.

“Shoot me, ni**a”: Kenosha teenage vigilante’s victim ID’d as registered CHILD MOLESTER, seen on video DARING others to shoot him

One of the men killed in the shooting in Kenosha, Wisconsin was identified by online journalists as a convicted child molester. A video from the night of the incident shows him provoking someone to shoot him.

The 36-year-old Joseph Rosenbaum was reported by local media to have been one of the two men killed in the Tuesday shooting initiated by teenager Kyle Rittenhouse during protests in Kenosha. Rosenbaum was identified as a registered sex offender, convicted in Arizona for “sexual conduct with a minor”, according to Wisconsin sex offender registry.

The man was also filmed provoking people during the night of the incident and using racial slurs. “Shoot me, ni**a,” Rosenbaum can be heard screaming in video footage obtained by Townhall reporter Julio Rosas.

Originally, Rittenhouse came to Kenosha from Illinois, claiming to be protecting the locals and their property, as the town’s racial protests included multiple instances of violence and arson. In a yet unclear incident, the 17-year-old opened fire with a rifle, killing two people, including Rosenbaum, and wounding one other man.

Initially, the protests and riots were incited by the police shooting of Jacob Blake, a black man who was shot seven times in the back in front of his three children on Sunday. Blake survived, but his family have confirmed that he is now paralyzed from the waist down.

'Huge' Chemical Fire Erupts In Louisiana After Hurricane Laura Made Landfall

Update (1158ET): A new report from The Daily Advertiser, a daily newspaper based in Lafayette, Louisiana, is warning of a "possible chlorine leak" fire on the west side of Lake Charles.

A fire has broken out on the west side of Lake Charles, causing gases and smoke to plume over I-10.

The fire seems to have erupted at a chemical plant site or oil refinery, according to multiple reports on social media.

I-10 is closed at Sulphur, Louisiana, due to the massive chlorine leak, a HAM radio operator tells the National Weather Service.

GoFundMe deletes fundraiser for accused Kenosha shooter Kyle Rittenhouse, promotes campaign for his victim

US-based crowdfunding platform GoFundMe has been accused of deleting a legal defense fundraiser for 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse who is charged with killing two men and injuring another during a violent altercation in Wisconsin.

Rittenhouse was arrested in his home state of Illinois following the incident, of which there are multiple videos from multiple different perspectives. He has been charged with first-degree murder and is also accused of fleeing Wisconsin “with intent to avoid prosecution,” having been described by police as a “fugitive from justice.”

The URL for his legal defense fundraiser “Help us Free Kyle!”, set up by his father Tom Rittenhouse, still appears in Google searches but redirects to a “page not found” notice on the GoFundMe website.

Another Ft. Hood Soldier Found Dead During Sex Abuse Case, Days After Military Said ‘No Foul Play’

For the past several months, a series of disturbing deaths and disappearances have revealed dangerous and corrupt conditions at the Fort Hood military base in Killeen, Texas. It seems that every few weeks there is a major crime making the news at Ford Hood, and soldiers are turning up dead at an alarming rate.

There does not seem to be any obvious connection between the soldiers who have died in and around the base in the past few months, but there are some overlapping themes in many of these cases. One detail that some of the victims have shared is that they were in the midst of reporting sexual assault or harassment that was taking place on the base.

According to a 2018 RAND study, Fort Hood had the highest number of reported sexual assaults and rapes of any US military facility worldwide, based on data from 2014.

Sgt. Elder Fernandes, the most recent Fort Hood soldier to die under mysterious circumstances, was transferred to a different unit just before his death because he was the victim in an “abusive sexual contact” investigation, an Army representative told CNN.

Lt. Col. Chris Brautigam, a 1st Cavalry Division public affairs officer, said that the transfer was intended to prevent retaliation and ensure that “he received the proper care.” The Fernandes family told reporters that Elder was admitted to a hospital on the military base earlier this month, but did not disclose any details about why he was admitted.

Before Fernades’ body was even found, Fort Hood was quick to announce that there was no foul play in this disappearance and that Fernades left the base “on his own accord.”

“Information gathered from fellow soldiers indicate Sgt. Fernandes left on his own accord,” the 1st Cavalry Division said in a statement days before his body was found.

However, even if he did voluntarily leave the base, it was far too early for the Army to announce that there was no foul play because an investigation hadn’t been completed yet.

Fernades’ body was discovered in a desolate area along the train tracks about 25 miles away from the military base.

Lebanon at risk of ‘disappearing’ if new govt isn’t formed, French FM Le Drian warns

Lebanon must immediately create a new government and implement reforms, or the country could face disintegration, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian has said.

Political and financial reforms proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron as prerequisites to receiving foreign aid must be implemented by Beirut without delay, Le Drian urged on Thursday.

“The international community will not sign a blank cheque if they don’t put in place the reforms. They must do it quickly … because the risk today is the disappearance of Lebanon,” the French diplomat said.

Macron’s two-page “concept paper” for Lebanon calls for the appointment of an interim government, an audit of the country’s central bank, and legislative elections within a year.

He is scheduled to visit Beirut on September 1, nearly a month after he came to the Lebanese capital following a deadly explosion sparked by a stash of ammonium nitrate, which killed 200 people and injured thousands more.

Immigration added 313,000 to UK population last year, with non-EU arrivals at record levels

The UK experienced a net immigration bump of 313,000 people in the year ending March 2020, according to new statistics, with the majority of arrivals coming from outside the European Union.

While the coronavirus pandemic has since slashed all forms of international travel, immigration to the UK increased to its highest level since the Brexit vote last year. In the first quarter of 2020, around 715,000 people moved to the UK, while 403,000 left, according to an Office for National Statistics (ONS) report published on Thursday. Overall, the population increased by 313,000.

Of the nearly three quarters of a million people who relocated to the UK, 257,000 came to study, while 458,000 came for work, family or other reasons. Only 195,000 arrivals were EU citizens, and the ONS noted that student arrivals from China and India accounted for a significant number of immigrants.

According to the ONS, non-EU net migration “is at some of the highest levels seen since International Passenger Survey (IPS) records began for this group in 1975.”

The ONS survey does not account for illegal immigrants, or those who have not yet been granted asylum. The period covered by the data is also largely pre-pandemic, the health crisis having initiated lockdowns and travel restrictions around the world.

Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage, who has repeatedly called on the government to stem the flow of migrant boats from France, was predictably dismayed at the latest statistics.

Biden said, “The problem we have right now is we’re in Donald Trump’s America. You know, to quote Kellyanne Conway, she said, and I’m paraphrasing today, they’re looking for more violence and more destruction because it helps them politically. He views this as a political benefit for him, he’s rooting for more violence, not less, and he’s clear about that. What’s he doing? He’s pouring gasoline on the fire. This happens to be Donald Trump’s America. In Donald Trump’s America COVID is out of control, he’s not prepared for it, he hasn’t responded to it, and he continues to do nothing to deal with it. We have 15 million people out of work. Davos Despair: ‘Great Reset’ Meeting Postponed over Coronavirus Fears

The World Economic Forum (WEF) announced Wednesday its annual summit in Switzerland has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The gathering of political, financial, and social elites was due to discuss “the ‘Great Reset’ in the post-COVID-19 era” however this lead agenda item will also be pushed to a place and time yet to be determined.

The next WEF meeting had originally been scheduled for Jan. 25. The summit is typically held every January in the ski resort of Davos, Switzerland, a small town in the Swiss Alps, around 92 miles south-east of Zurich.

The forum said the soonest the 2021 summit could occur is “early next summer.” The move to reschedule comes as the global death toll from coronavirus surpasses 820,000, with the caseload approaching 24m.

“The decision was not taken easily, since the need for global leaders to come together to design a common recovery path and shape the ‘Great Reset’ in the post-COVID-19 era is so urgent,” WEF spokesman Adrian Monck said in a statement.

“However, the advice from experts is that we cannot do so safely in January.”

The Davos meeting has long been seen as a playground for the global elite. In the past it has featured at least 40 heads of state and 2,500 top business executives at any one time, most choosing to fly in by private jet.

The forum’s 50th annual confab seven months ago included appearances by business figures including JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon and Hungarian-American philanthropist George Soros.

Former Vice President-turned-carbon billionaire Al Gore and rapper Pharrell Williams have also been notable attendees discussing global warming and recycling respectively.

So too Prince Charles and a host of Hollywood celebrities all charged with a mission to change the world into a shape they recognize and approve of.

Last January Greta Thunberg graced the meeting and took the opportunity to scold everyone else for not responding to her repeated warnings of impending climate catastrophe.

How much does it cost to participate?

The WEF website reveals annual membership (required if you want to buy a ticket to Davos) is upwards of U.S.$60,000, depending on the institution or company’s “level of engagement”.

At the top are the 100 “strategic partner” companies – including Accenture, Barclays, Deloitte, KPMG and Unilever – who pay around U.S.$600,000 for annual membership, which entitles them to buy an access-all-sessions pass for themselves and five colleagues, including special privileges. But they still have to purchase actual tickets to the event.

The WEF, which is run as a not-for-profit organisation, said in its last annual report the Davos meeting generated 13 percent of its $378.5m revenues in 2019, warning a cancellation “could have negative consequences on the foundation’s revenue.”

Rule, Britannia! BBC Boss Compares Britons’ Patriotism to Nazi Gas Chambers

A BBC executive producer said that singing the words of the patriotic British song Rule, Britannia! is akin to neo-Nazis singing about gas chambers.

Following the BBC’s decision to remove the lyrics of the song in its Last Night of the Proms broadcast, the executive producer of the BBC’s Songs of Praise and CEO of the production company Nine Lives Media, Cat Lewis, claimed that the song’s line ‘Britons never, never, never shall be slaves’ is similar to if neo-Nazis shouted: “We will never be forced into a gas chamber”.

“Do those Brits who believe it’s ok to sing an 18th Century song about never being enslaved, written when the UK was enslaving and killing millions of innocents, also believe it’s appropriate for neo-Nazis to shout, ‘We will never be forced into a gas chamber.’ #RuleBritannia,” the BBC producer wrote on social media.

Lewis explained that she believes “slavery was Britain’s holocaust. We should apologise for it properly and yet at the moment, we have NO memorial to enslaved people in the UK. We should not celebrate slave owners.”

“We should not sing in a gloating way that Britons will never be enslaved, when we were responsible for enslaving so many. We should have anthems which celebrate what is truly great about the UK, which we can all sing and this will help unite our country,” she went on to write.

The woke screed from the BBC producer was met with furious outrage on social media, with many correcting her version of ‘history’.

“Britannia helped end slavery! This song rightly marks that,” Former Brexit Party MEP Martin Daubney declared, adding that Ms Lewis needs “a history lesson”.

Indeed, following the passage of the Act for the Abolition of the Slave Trade in 1807, the Royal Navy, specifically the West Africa Squadron, captured an estimated 1,600 slave trade ships, freeing some 150,000 African slaves in the process.

Between 1830 and 1865 some 1,587 British sailors lost their lives in their fight against slavery.

Lewis responded: “The song was written in 1740 & up to the end of the 18th century, millions were enslaved Martin Daubney. Yes, I’m also very proud Britain ended slavery in the 19th Century, but this song is not about that.”

Again Ms Lewis’ myopic view of British history was dispelled by Daubney, who noted that: “For 300 years Barbary Pirates from North Africa frequently plundered our shores for slaves. The Royal Navy fought back – hence in 1740 Rule Britannia roared “Britons never never never shall be slaves”.

1,600 Pounds of Meth Seized in Two Shipments at Texas Border Crossing

Customs and Border Protection officers in the Laredo, Texas, area seized more than 1,600 pounds of methamphetamine in two cross-border shipments. Officials estimated the value of the two drug seizures at nearly $30 million.

CBP officers assigned to the World Trade Bridge on August 14 observed a tractor-trailer approaching from Mexico for entry into the United States. The driver presented a cargo manifest indicating a shipment of industrial mixing machines, according to information obtained from CBP Office of Field Operations officials.

The officers referred the driver to a secondary inspection area for a K-9 search and a scan from a non-intrusive imaging system. The scan revealed anomalies leading officers to search the trailer. The physical search led to the discovery of 1,211.13 pounds of methamphetamine hidden in the cargo.

Officials estimated the value of this shipment at $24,222,381.

Three days later, officers assigned to the same bridge observed another truck approaching for inspection. The driver reported hauling a load of industrial machinery.

An initial search by a K-9 and non-intrusive imaging system led officers to conduct a physical search of the trailer. During the search, the officers found 398.77 pounds of methamphetamine, officials reported.

This load had an estimated street value of $5,582,752, the report indicated.

In total, the officers seized 1,609.9 pounds of methamphetamine in the two shipments with an estimated value of more than $29.8 million.

The officers seized the drugs and turned the cases over to ICE Homeland Security Investigation special agents for further investigation and preparation of drug trafficking charges.

“The scope of methamphetamine abuse in the U.S. is on the rise,” said Acting Port Director Andrew Douglas, Laredo Port of Entry. “Seizures like these underscore the importance that CBP officers play in achieving our overall national border security mission and protecting the public from illegal narcotics.”

Horsham, UK, 2013 – Tony Rooke, in an act of civil disobedience, refused to pay the mandatory £130 TV license fee claiming it violates Section 15 of the Terrorism Act. Rooke’s accusation was aimed at the BBC who reported the collapse of WTC 7 over 20 minutes before it actually fell, and the judge accepted Rooke’s argument. While it was not a public inquiry into 9/11, the recognition of the BBC’s actions on September 11th are considered a small victory, one that was never reported in the US.

Rooke had been given a six-month conditional discharge and told to pay £200 after admitting that he owned a television and watched it without a license. He represented himself at Horsham Magistrates’ Court in West Sussex.

“Mr. Rooke puts the basis of his defence under Section 15 of the Terrorism Act, effectively asking the court to find the BBC a terrorist organisation and that if he continues to pay them he himself is committing a criminal offence.” – District Judge Stephen Nicholls

In Rooke’s statement to the court:

“I believe the BBC, who are directly funded by the licence fee, are furthering the purposes of terrorism and I have incontrovertible evidence to this effect. I do not use this word lightly given where I am.”

Although he was not allowed to show his video evidence in court due to the District Judge deeming it irrelevant to the trial, the fact that the BBC reported WTC 7’s collapse over 20 minutes beforehand proved to be evidence enough.

He also made reference to the theories behind the collapse of WTC 7 being a controlled demolition, as the evidence suggests. In an additional statement:

“The BBC reported it 20 minutes before it fell. They knew about it beforehand. Last time I was here I asked you (the judge): ‘Were you aware of World Trade Centre 7?’ You said you had heard of it. Ten years later you should have more than heard of it. It’s the BBC’s job to inform the public. Especially of miracles of science and when laws of physics become suspended.

“They have made programmes making fools of and ridiculing those of us who believe in the laws of gravity. American reports have shown that the fall was nothing but a controlled demolition.

Both Microsoft and Oracle expressed interest in the app after Trump ordered ByteDance, the Chinese tech company that owns it, to sell it to a US entity or risk losing all its American customers.

He said it was a national security risk because it had access to more than 100million Americans' data.

On Thursday it emerged that Microsoft and Walmart were teaming up in their bid. It came after fears among US investors in ByteDance questioned whether they'd have a place in a Microsoft sale.

The Wrap cited sources who said Oracle was the preferred buyer and that their offer - which has the backing of Trump - is $10billion in cash and $10billion in Oracle stock.

Half of TikTok's profits will go back to ByteDance for two years, their sources said.

Larry Ellison, who owns Oracle, is a Trump donor. Trump backed Oracle as the buyer earlier this month, calling it a 'great company' and saying: 'I think that Oracle would be certainly somebody that could handle it.'

In a statement announcing their partnership with Microsoft on Thursday, Walmart said it was eager to be involved in the app which has merged e-commerce with social media and video.

Free Speech be Damned: Joshua Krook and the Australian Public Service

There was very little controversial about it. A featured blog post in the Oxford Political Review, authored in April by Joshua Krook, suggested that COVID-19 had brought a host of benefits for big tech companies. Isolation ushered people towards online platforms. Engagement on such platforms had increased dramatically.

Names were not mentioned. Krook’s then employer, the Australian Public Service, made no appearance in the text. Tech entities were not outed, though Krook noted, in general, how “big tech companies” have been “pursuing the attention economy”, seeking to get “all our attention at all times.” With COVID-19, this had been achieved. “People are trapped indoors, at home, on their devices at all times, with nowhere to go.” Krook’s tone did come across as a touch judgmental, suggesting that replacing “human connection with technology has never felt so nakedly negative.” He likened big tech entities to spouses who know “everything about you.” By giving them information about yourself, a loss of free will is perpetrated precisely “because the person, or company, knows so much about you.”

It took three months for Krook to get the call. The managers of the APS took issue with the post. It’s pessimism might damage the government’s relationship with the technology industry. In Krook’s words to the Guardian, “the problem was that in talking about the big tech companies, we risked damaging the relationship the government has with big tech companies and that when we go and do public-private partnerships, they could Google my name, find my article and then refuse to work with us.” Had the article been ingratiating – “positive about the big tech companies” – it would have been entirely permissible. His options were starkly simple: remove the post or face termination of employment. Any future pieces would have to go through the censoring scissors of the service.

Germany to end mandatory tests for travelers, bans protests

Germany will end mandatory coronavirus tests for travelers returning from high-risk areas abroad and again focus its testing strategy on people with symptoms or possible exposure to COVID-19 patients, the country’s health minister said Wednesday.

Health Minister Jens Spahn said that over the summer vacation period the number of virus tests performed in Germany nearly doubled, to 900,000 per week, in part to identify people who caught the virus during trips abroad.

People coming home from coronavirus risk areas were offered free tests at airports, train stations and highway stops, allowing them to cut short the required two-week quarantine if their result came back negative.

Travelers returning from high-risk areas, which include most countries outside the European Union and some regions inside the bloc, will in the future be required to go into mandatory quarantines for at least five days before taking a test, which may no longer be free unless ordered by a doctor.

“With the end of the vacation period … this risk is going down again,” Spahn told reporters in Berlin. “We have to focus more on patients with symptoms and those who had contact with COVID patients.”

Spahn did not say when exactly the testing strategy would change, but it is likely that that decision will be made at a meeting on Thursday between Chancellor Angela Merkel and the country’s 16 state governors.

The change in the country’s testing strategy is also due to Germany’s labs reaching the limits of their capacities, Spahn said.

The operators of Frankfurt Airport, Germany’s biggest, criticized the decision to focus on quarantining, rather than testing travelers.

Stefan Schulte, the chief executive of Fraport, said the move amounted to a second lockdown for the airline and travel industries. He called on the government to instead improve the existing system of testing travelers from high-risk areas rather than to dismantled it again.

On Wednesday, Germany’s disease control center reported 1,576 new confirmed coronavirus cases. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the country has reported 236,429 cases and 9,280 virus-related deaths. The average age of infected individuals has declined to 32 from around age 50 at the beginning of the pandemic.

More younger people becoming infected means that fewer COVID-19 patients ended up hospitalized, but “we want to avoid that (the virus) will reach those groups that are especially vulnerable,” Spahn said.

Late Tuesday, the parties in Germany’s governing coalition agreed to extend short-work measures introduced due to the pandemic until the end of next year, with the government supporting companies using the strategy to avoid layoffs with around 10 billion euros ($11.8 billion) in tax money.

In further developments, organizers canceled plans for a large concert with Bryan Adams in Duesseldorf on Sept. 4, while in Berlin authorities banned several protests planned for the weekend against coronavirus pandemic measures.

Officials said that those protesting would likely have breached rules on social distancing designed to stop the spread of the virus. Germany has seen an upswing in new confirmed cases in recent weeks, and the government is considering whether to impose fresh restrictions again.

Authorities in the capital cited a rally against COVID-19 restrictions on Aug. 1 during which participants ignored mask-wearing and distancing rules and other conditions imposed on the protest.

Berlin’s top security official, Andreas Geisel, welcomed the decision.

“We need to weigh the basic right of freedom of assembly against the sanctity of life,” he said. “We chose life.”

Geisel said police would act to stop any large gathering of people and indicated that authorities wouldn’t tolerate a tent camp that protesters have erected near the German parliament.

“I’m not prepared to accept that Berlin is abused a second time as a stage for corona deniers … and right-wing extremists,” he said.

Numerous leading figures in the country’s far-right scene, including members of the Alternative for Germany party, had announced they would participate in rallies in Berlin on Saturday.

The party’s leader in the Berlin state assembly, Georg Pazderski, criticized the decision to ban the protests, calling it disproportionate and unjustified.

The FBI said Wednesday there has been no intelligence to suggest that foreign countries are working to undermine mail-in voting and no signs of any coordinated effort to commit widespread fraud through the vote-by-mail process, despite numerous claims made by President Donald Trump in recent months.

Officials at multiple federal agencies stopped short of directly contradicting Trump, but their comments made it clear they had not seen evidence to support the president's statements that voter fraud will be rampant in the upcoming election and that the expected surge in mail-in ballots due to the coronavirus pandemic leaves November's presidential election especially vulnerable to foreign interference.

Trump, for instance, tweeted July 30 that mail-in voting was proving to be a 'catastrophic disaster' and added: 'The Dems talk of foreign influence in voting, but they know that Mail-In Voting is an easy way for foreign countries to enter the race. Even beyond that, there's no accurate count!'

But a senior official with the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, asked on a conference call with reporters Wednesday about the threat of foreign countries manufacturing their own ballots or amplifying disinformation about the integrity of the vote-by-mail process, said there was no information or intelligence that any adversary was 'engaged in any kind of activity to undermine any part of the mail-in vote.'

A senior FBI official said officials had not seen to date a coordinated, nationwide effort to corrupt mail-in voting.

Gaza is in Covid-19 lockdown but Israel’s blockade and bombs continue regardless

Life has shut down in the Gaza Strip with an unexpected number of coronavirus infections within a single-family outside the quarantine zones. A number of deaths have also been reported and a full curfew was announced on Monday. In the middle of all of this, Israel is continuing to bomb the besieged territory regardless of the unprecedented suffering of the Palestinians.

The curfew is part of the total lockdown imposed by the government and local police. This has had the desired effect of raising awareness among the people of the threats they face, although they were probably expecting things to go from bad to worse.

The lockdown affects every aspect of life: cafes, businesses, mosques, markets, schools, colleges and public gardens are all closed. People are now confined to their homes to await updates after a relatively lengthy period of what passes for normality these days.

The latter had seen a graduation ceremony for 400 students who were told by their professors not to wait around too long, but to get home without delay. They did as they were told.

The four coronavirus cases within one family were detected in Al-Maghazi refugee camp. The government sealed off the camp immediately and then extended the lockdown across the Strip as the number of confirmed cases increased.

The spokesman for the Ministry of Health has issued instructions and guidance for the lockdown, and warned everyone against breaking or ignoring the safety measures. He also advised anyone who might have been in touch with those who have tested positive for the virus to be checked themselves.

Cyber Command Gets New Surveillance Powers Under Guise of Battling Election Meddling

US Cyber Command and the Pentagon are availing themselves of the Russian meddling narratives and added a few others to justify the creation of a cyberwar army with international and domestic capabilities via the National Guard.

China doesn’t want Trump to win in November, according to William Evanina, Director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center (NCSC). Russia, on the other hand, is “using a range of measures” to undermine Joe Biden’s candidacy. The intelligence official also accuses China of “expanding its influence” ahead of the 2020 U.S. presidential election, but only to “deflect and counter criticism” as opposed to a direct attack on the incumbent.

As the election nears, calls for bolstering cybersecurity efforts from the U.S. military establishment and other quarters are intensifying. Former head of the NSA, Mike Rogers, leaned into the Russian meddling narrative in a recent interview with NPR to justify increased surveillance and more proactive approaches to the ostensible “threat” posed by social media memes and hashtags to the American electoral process. In early February, the top three cyber chiefs pitched a social media hashtag of their own, #Protect2020, which has been posted enthusiastically by FBI twitter accounts, but few others.

Rogers’ successor at the NSA, Gen. Paul Nakasone revealed in a Foreign Affairs article published Tuesday, that he had received authorization to carry out operations against Russian “interference” in the 2018 U.S. midterm elections and had sent “an undisclosed number of defensive cyber-operators” to countries bordering American adversaries for the purposes of defending against foreign meddling.

A Sailor is Suing DoD on Behalf of Her 3 Babies Who Died

A federal judge has ruled that a lawsuit against Portsmouth Naval Medical Center can continue in an unusual case filed on behalf of three military dependents who died shortly after they were born in 2017.

Their mother, an active-duty Navy sailor, filed the suit on behalf of the babies in 2018. The infants were born Nov. 15, 2017, at 23 weeks, but all died nearly immediately after. The mother had undergone intrauterine insemination at the hospital and became pregnant with quintuplets. Two died in utero 19 weeks into the pregnancy, followed nearly a month later by their siblings.

In the suit, the sailor, identified only by the initials C.R.M., alleged that her military doctor was negligent in performing the insemination during a period of known ovarian hyper-stimulation, resulting in a high-risk pregnancy with multiple fetuses. She said she was not advised of the risks of such pregnancies and argued that she was denied a referral to an obstetrics specialist skilled in handling such cases.

Attorneys for the U.S. government asked that the case be thrown out, saying that since the sailor was active duty at the time of the alleged malpractice, she was barred by the Feres doctrine from filing suit against the government. The defendants also argued that the babies could not sue for negligence that occurred before they were “viable” embryos.

Feres is a 70-year-old court Supreme Court ruling that prohibits service members from suing the federal government for injuries deemed incidental to military service. It does usually not apply to non-military family members or civilians. But under Feres, military dependents who are harmed as a result of injury to their military sponsor also cannot file suit under what is known as a "genesis test."

In the ruling issued Aug. 20 and first reported by Bloomberg Law, U.S. District Judge Anthony Trenga discounted the genesis argument, saying Feres did not apply to the deceased children because their injuries were not caused by an injury suffered to their mother as part of her military duties.

Trenga also argued that the case did not violate other principles of Feres such as whether a decision in favor of the plaintiffs would damage military structure and discipline.

The Navy's attorneys also argued that the federal court the Eastern District of Virginia lacked jurisdiction in the case. And under Virginia law, they said, the children couldn't sue for an insemination procedure that gave them life but at the same time allegedly caused their injuries.

Trenga also said that he believes the Supreme Court of Virginia would conclude that even though the plaintiffs the premature babies did not exist at the time of the insemination procedure, the medical treatment is considered health services and the treating physician assumed care of the "child intended to be conceived."

"Even though that child did not exist when that procedure was administered, that procedure qualified as "health care" since it was administered precisely for the purpose of causing the conception and birth of that child, and for that reason … for the child's benefit," Trenga wrote.

The government is likely to appeal the case, as it has done with many others that cite the Feres doctrine as a defense. The U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear a case in 2015 that challenged the application of the "genesis test" in the case involving an Air Force dependent who suffered injuries during childbirth when her mother, an active-duty Air Force captain, was mistakenly given the wrong medication while delivering her daughter.

Ex-police chief who oversaw Netanyahu probes: He’ll be convicted…if he’s tried

In interview promoting new book, Roni Alsheich says only question is whether PM will manage to grant himself immunity; hopes he’ll will resign long before verdict

Former Israel Police commissioner Roni Alsheich, who oversaw the corruption investigations into Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has said in an interview that he is confident the premier will be convicted, unless he manages to pass legislation granting himself immunity while in office.

The remarks came almost two years after Alsheich’s tenure ended, and ahead of the publication of his book.

In the interview with the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, Alsheich was asked whether he believes Netanyahu will be convicted in light of the evidence gathered.

“The entire question is whether he will be tried,” Alsheich responded. “Everything can happen. Maybe there will be immunity, I don’t know.”

As Israel’s top cop, Alsheich oversaw the police investigations into Netanyahu, which concluded with an indictment against the premier on charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust. His trial began earlier this year, but the court is only set to begin to hear testimony in January 2021.

“If he is tried, I assume he will be convicted,” Alsheich said. “Had we not thought the odds of conviction were so high, nobody would have taken that chance,” he said.

Alsheich said he hopes Netanyahu will resign long before the verdict is announced, because if that doesn’t happen, “this country will pay impossible prices.”

CDC director walks back change in coronavirus testing guidelines

The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Thursday issued new guidance for coronavirus testing, days after a quiet change sparked protests from the scientific and medical communities.

In a statement, Director Robert Redfield said those who come into contact with confirmed or probable COVID-19 patients could be tested themselves, even if they do not show symptoms of the virus.

“Testing is meant to drive actions and achieve specific public health objectives. Everyone who needs a COVID-19 test, can get a test. Everyone who wants a test does not necessarily need a test; the key is to engage the needed public health community in the decision with the appropriate follow-up action,” Redfield said.

The CDC revised its testing guidance earlier this week, limiting tests to those who show symptoms. That change prompted backlash among public health experts who pointed to the role asymptomatic people play in spreading the virus, and concern that the revision had been dictated by political appointees outside of CDC.

Redfield said the guidelines issued on Monday had been coordinated with the White House coronavirus task force. The new guidance comes as the number of coronavirus tests across the United States has fallen in recent weeks.

But even his Thursday statement falls short of previous guidance, in which the CDC recommended contacts of those infected with the virus be tested specifically because of the threat of asymptomatic or presymptomatic transmission.

After reaching a peak of nearly a million new tests a month ago, the number of tests conducted on a daily basis has declined to fewer than 700,000 over the last four days, according to data maintained by the COVID Tracking Project, an independent group of researchers.

Biden insists he will debate Trump after Pelosi remarks

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden on Thursday said that he would debate President Trump shortly after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) suggested that Biden shouldn’t “legitimize” the incumbent president by participating in debates.

“No. As long as the commission continues down the straight now as they have, I’m going to debate him,” Biden told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell when asked whether he would consider not debating Trump following Pelosi’s comments.

“I am going to be the fact checker on the stage while I’m debating him,” Biden continued.

The former vice president, who has already agreed in writing to three presidential debates with Trump, said that he had received other recommendations that he shouldn’t debate Trump without a fact checker present because of the president’s penchant for false statements, but he shrugged them off.

“Look, I think everybody knows that this man has a somewhat pathological tendency not to tell the truth,” Biden said.

Biden added that the Republican National Convention this week has been characterized by “one lie after another,” citing fact checks being done by the media during this week’s convention.

Biden’s comments came roughly an hour after Pelosi said at a press conference that she didn’t believe there should be any presidential debates during the 2020 campaign.

“I do not think that the president of the United States has comported himself in a way that anybody has any association with truth, evidence, data and facts,” Pelosi said. “I wouldn’t legitimize a conversation with him nor a debate in terms of the presidency of the United States.”

The leading House Democrat said that, instead, each candidate should take separate stages to answer questions about their policy positions, saying a debate with Trump would be “an exercise in skulduggery.” She acknowledged during her remarks that Biden’s campaign “thinks in a different way about this.”

The Commission on Presidential Debates has scheduled three presidential debates for Sept. 29 in Cleveland, Oct. 15 in Miami, and Oct. 22 in Nashville, as well as a vice presidential debate on Oct. 7 in Salt Lake City. Biden has agreed to participate in all three presidential debates.

Massive Absentee Ballot Nightmare Uncovered in 72% of Detroit’s Voting Districts

One of the Democrats’ two biggest lies they’re telling this election cycle is that President Donald Trump is actively working behind the scenes to undermine the historically underfunded and problem-plagued U.S. Postal Service.

Why? So he can thwart mail-in balloting and steal the election from Sleepy Joe Biden and Kamala ‘I’m So Left-Wing’ Harris.

It’s silly, frankly, and it’s along the same lines of the Democrats’ 2016 election cycle hoax: That Trump worked with Mother Russia to steal the election from the chronically corrupt Hillary Clinton.

The postal service lie is so pervasive even Hollywood’s ‘reasonable’ liberals, like actor Kevin Costner, have bought in.

But speaking of mail-in ballots, there really are huge problems with them, any many aren’t related at all to the USPS.

Detroit comes to mind.

City and state election officials are freaking out after discovering a massive imbalance in ballots and vote counts between districts, something that one election commission member says the problem is far to big to fix before the November elections.

And while Trump isn’t likely to win in the city of Detroit, which is a Democrat haven, mail-in balloting problems of any size are significant because he only won the state in 2016 by a razor-thin margin (10,704 votes).

The Federalist Reports:

As swing state Michigan approaches an election in which it could play a pivotal role, new data from its Aug. 4 primary reveals that in 72 percent of Detroit’s election precincts, recorded ballot counts for absentee voters did not match the number of ballots actually cast. …

According to the Detroit News, 363 of Detroit’s 503 absentee voting precincts showed problems: 131 were off by plus or minus one ballot without an explanation; 85 were off by two ballots without an explanation; 48 were off by three; 26 off by four; and 73 off by five.

Including votest cast on primary day with absentee ballot counts, 46 percent of the total vote counts in Detroit precincts were off, according to the Detroit News.

“The people of Michigan deserve to know that their elections are being conducted fairly and competently, but today’s news shows that Wayne County and the City of Detroit can’t conduct an election to even the most basic of standards,” Laura Cox, chairwoman of the Michigan Republican Party, said Thursday.

“It was so inaccurate that we can’t even attempt to make it right,” Monica Palmer, a Republican member of the Board of Canvassers in Wayne County, which includes Detroit, said.

“Based on the inaccuracies that we saw during the canvass, something has to happen. We can’t go into November with what occurred during the primary,” she added.
