China arrests over 10 heading to Taiwan by boat
Hong Kong media say a pro-democracy activist from the territory was one of the people arrested by Chinese authorities while secretly heading to Taiwan by sea. The Coast Guard Bureau in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong said it intercepted a speedboat on Sunday on suspicion of illegally entering China-administered waters off the coast of Guangdong. The bureau added that it detained more than 10 people on board the ship.
Hong Kong media say those arrested include activist Andy Li. He was out on bail after being arrested in Hong Kong on August 10 for alleged violations of China's new national security law for the territory. Hong Kong media say the boat was also carrying 11 others, including some who allegedly manufactured explosives in connection with protest activities in the territory.
Those arrested are thought to be under interrogation in mainland China. But it remains unclear how they will be treated. Hong Kong police commissioner Chris Tang told a news conference on Thursday that his force is seeking information about the incident from mainland China. Several others were arrested on August 10 along with Li. They include pro-democracy activist Agnes Chow and Jimmy Lai, the founder of a newspaper known to be critical of Beijing. Police accuse them of colluding with foreign forces to harm national security.
