The first problem we run into when discussing this issue is that names/terms have shifted and merged. The next problem is that everyone has their favorite account of what happened and therefore has their own perception of who did what, why, and who represents good/evil.
Depending upon who you listen to, what we describe as the god who created our world is the descent of Lucifer. However, Lucifer is also understood to be part of an even higher order. IE - our world is not the sum of all things and God is still above it all.
Of course, a convenient translation problem occurs in the biblical scriptures. Lucifer is the name of the Morning Star - the Light Bearer. When the fallen angel is compared to Lucifer as a form of symbolism, many Christian priests and orthodoxies began associating anything from the symbols of The Morning Star (the planet we now call Venus) with that of the devil and satanic ritual.
Thus, the pentagram - used to denote the path Lucifer (Venus) traces through the sky - became a symbol of the devil to many Christians. Any mention of Lucifer became equivalent to Satan - and the many old hermetic ideas which came from seeking enlightenment via study of the world (such as the study and mapping of stars - IE - tracing the morning star's path) became labeled as witchcraft and the 'pursuit of Lucifer' being construed as contracts with the devil and the like.
Of course, a certain type of cruel and evil person was perfectly fine enjoining the devil even so.
Do you understand why symbolism will be their downfall?
It is their need to have corrupted symbols. The true meaning of their symbols reflect the nearly universal desire of people to pursue understanding and betterment of life.
