no quantum necessary
just more of what we already have.
I hate to dismiss things I cannot conceptualize simply because 'hurr durr caveman no understand!' but considering we just saw our first atom a year or so ago, it's highly unlikely we are actually working with things smaller than atoms and not only smaller than atoms, but near-infinitely smaller than atoms.
The math doesn't even make sense.
My understanding of quantum theory is it all spawned from the identification of radiation in a pure vacuum. ie: Something where there is "nothing" or an underlying fabric of sorts that we cannot measure.
A lot of history just called that spirituality.
