Also check out the 12 Monkeys tv series from a few years ago. Made by the SciFi channel, so not the best production value, but very interesting story (not just a remake of the film.) In addition to the time travel and pandemic virus aspects, there is lots of symbolism related to topics here, like elite dark cultists operating over millenia to carry out plans for world domination & mass destruction, consuming a rare forbidden substance to access arcane powers, reckless scienctists disregarding the laws of nature, ancient tech, humanoids created by secret science, etc.
