Very similar.

Difference is there was no large scale destruction of property by the protesters. There was the Ayers group who did several bombings, but by and large street protesters didn't destroy property.

Watching the RNC guests get accosted by protesters can give you an idea of what the guys who came back from Vietnam went through as they walked through the airport after deplaning. They were spit at and had piss thrown at them, too.

My take on current events is that there was never any consequence for the protesters back then. Nixon brought in a kind of logical calm and things slowly calmed down. TPTB maybe figured to just leave well enough alone and let it peter out.

Protesters turned to academia and politics, and Carter's amnesty of the draft dodgers who left the country gave all the troublemakers a clean slate to work off of. I've seen opinions where Carter's amnesty (1976) turned white males away from the dem party, and this is the reason for the "war on men". I kind of agree with that. Regular Joes took too much shit to just accept the kumbaya route.

Anyway, all the old hippies are enjoying a last hurrah with the current riots, IMO. Trump is reacting differently than Johnson and Nixon, though. I'll wager Trump was with the "hard hat" group back in the day. There's a score to settle that's been left to fester from back then and Trump's going to deliver it.
