Submarine loaded with $18 million worth of cocaine purchased by Jalisco New Generation Cartel is intercepted by Colombian authorities

Colombian authorities intercepted a narco-submarine transporting $18 million worth of cocaine for Mexico's fastest-growing cartel.

The massive drug bust was made 52 miles off the Pacific coast city of Tumaco on Sunday and netted the arrest of three individuals who were manning the submarine.

According to the National Defense Ministry, the submarine is valued at $1.2 million and has sufficient space to transport up to three tons of cocaine.

The vessel was also equipped with a special satellite navigation system that programmed its arrival in Jalisco, Mexico, in the first week of September.

Intelligence reports revealed the shipment had been arranged by the Grupos Armados Organizados Residuales E-30 [Residual Organized Armed Groups], considered one of the most dangerous criminal syndicates in Colombia with links to murders and kidnappings in the provinces of Nariño and Cauca.

The group had entered an agreement to sell 1,055 kilos of cocaine to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, one of the most powerful criminal organizations in Mexico, and drop off the delivery in Costa Careyes, an exclusive resort town off the Pacific Ocean.

The Jalisco New Generation Cartel's influence rivals that of Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán old Sinaloa Cartel, which is now operated by his sons, the organization's co-founder Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada, and Rafael Caro Quintero.

The Jalisco network is led by Nemesio 'El Mencho' Oseguera, for whom the Drug Enforcement Agency is offering a $10million reward for information leading to his capture.

His cartel has a presence in 24 of 32 states in Mexico and has shipped cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and fentanyl-laced heroin to the United States.

The Colombian narco submarine seizure comes nine months after Spanish authorities intercepted a vessel with $121million worth of cocaine following a week-long, 4,800-mile voyage.

NATO in crisis

NATO’s Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg met German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin Thursday against a backdrop of challenges for the transatlantic military alliance, rising tensions in Europe and a political crisis in Belarus.

Addressing the situation in Belarus, Jens Stoltenberg denied accusations that NATO troops were gathering at the country’s border with Poland and Lithuania.

“NATO has no military build-up in the region so any excuse to use that as an excuse to crack down on peaceful protesters is absolutely unjustified,” Stoltenberg said.

It is worth noting that there is skepticism over what role NATO should play in de-escalating international disputes, as divisions remain within the organization.

Chief strategy officer at Rasmussen Global Fabrice Pothier told Thursday that NATO was riven with divisions between its members.

The spat between Greece and Turkey has caused a rift in NATO, and within Europe, with the U.S. reportedly conducting naval exercises with Turkey, while France has conducted drills with Greece.

“The real squeeze for NATO is from the inside. Yes, there are crises on the outside in Belarus, in the Eastern Mediterranean crisis, but fundamentally it is squeezed from the inside because some of the big members, the U.S., Turkey, France, are not seeing eye to eye. I think on the inside (of NATO) there is a real political crisis simmering,” Pothier told.

Today such a crisis may arise in Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Poland. Because both the soldiers and residents of these countries do not like the fact that U.S. and NATO multinational EFP battlegroup soldiers are allowed everything.

The governments of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia regularly declare their loyalty to NATO’s course of confrontation with Russia and the readiness of citizens to participate in the militarization of NATO’s Eastern flank. However, opinion polls show otherwise.

Thus, the IBRIS Market and Social Research Institute (Poland) and the portal Defense24.pl conducted a survey. It was about the determination of the population of Poland and its NATO partners (Germany, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia) to take up arms if necessary.

As a result, a low level of readiness of Lithuanians, Latvians and Estonians to fight with Russia was revealed.

The Baltic countries showed the following results: only 17% of the inhabitants of Lithuania would fight, 16% – in Latvia and 24% – in Estonia.

U.S. and NATO, deploying a contingent in the Baltic States and Poland, are concentrating certain troops there and expose the population of these countries to a threat, because in fact it can lead to direct confrontation with Russia and Belarus.

Kamala Harris: Biden White House Will Not Place Conditions on Aid to Israel

Senator Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate for Vice President in the upcoming U.S. election, said on Wednesday that if she and former Vice President Joe Biden win the election, their administration will not place new conditions on military aid to Israel, and will continue to provide Israel with the high levels of security assistance that the country received from the Obama administration.

“Joe has made it clear,” Harris said in a phone call with Jewish supporters, “he will not tie security assistance to political decisions Israel makes, and I couldn’t agree more.” Biden has indeed stated several times over the past year that unlike other Democratic politicians, most notably Senator Bernie Sanders, he does not support the calls to place conditions on military aid to Israel in order to pressure the country to change its policies. Biden has called this idea “outrageous.”

Harris told the supporters on Wednesday’s call that Biden was proud of the Obama administration’s unprecedented levels of security assistance to Israel. She added that as Obama’s Vice President, Biden was deeply involved in negotiating the 2016 U.S.-Israel Memorandum of Understanding, which secured $38 billion in military aid to Israel, more than any other U.S. administration had ever agreed to devote to Israel’s security.

In a hinted reference to a recent controversy surrounding the sale of F-35 planes by the Trump administration to the United Arab Emirates, Harris also stated that a Biden-Harris administration will be totally committed to upholding Israel’s Qualitative Military Edge over its neighbors. “We will sustain this unbreakable commitment to Israel’s security,” Harris said.

In reply to a question about Iran, Harris said that “we will not allow Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon, period.” She criticized President Donald Trump from withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal, a step she said had increased Iran’s aggressive behavior and isolated the United States on the world stage. “The deal blocked Iran’s pathways to a nuclear weapon and it was working,” she said.

Harris noted that as a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, she heard from U.S. intelligence officials that the deal was working, and that Trump’s decision to withdraw from it in 2018 left the United States isolated from its allies who are still committed to the deal. “Trump recently took the issue of the arms embargo on Iran to the UN Security Council, only one other country voted with us,” Harris told the listeners.

Biden has said in the past that if elected president, he will not just re-commit to the 2015 nuclear deal, but will try to negotiate new terms and conditions that will cover issues that were left out, such as Iran’s military involvement in other Middle Eastern countries and its ballistic missile program. Harris repeated that message, stating that “we will work with our allies to strengthen and extend the deal, and push back against Iran’s destabilizing actions.”

Harris accused Trump of “repeated failures” in his handling of the coronavirus and the economic crisis it has unleashed in the United States. She said that Trump seeks to sow division on every issue - “even masks! He’s dividing the country.” She said that America needs “a president who will bring all of us together.” Harris also warned that Trump was trying to dismantle the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) and that Biden will preserve and strengthen it if elected.

The call also featured two other speakers - Harris’ husband Doug Emhoff, who is Jewish, and Rep. Ted Deutch (D-FL), one of the most prominent Jewish lawmakers in Congress. Emhoff recounted visiting Israel with Harris in 2018 and witnessing her “strong support of the Israeli people.” He noted that Biden was inspired to run for president by the anti-Semitic, far-right march that took place in Charlottesville in 2017, and by Trump’s assertion that there were “very fine people” among the neo-Nazis who participated in it.

Deutch said that the Biden campaign was making an “unprecedented Jewish engagement effort” in key swing states, and warned that despite Biden’s current lead in the polls, “we can’t take anything for granted. We need to fight for every Jewish vote in every swing state.” Both Emhoff and Deutch encouraged people to check their voting registration status and make a voting plan ahead of the November 3rd election.
