UCLA Researcher Arrested, Charged With Destroying Evidence In China Espionage Probe

Chinese national and University of California-Los Angeles researcher has been arrested for allegedly throwing away a damaged hard drive while the FBI was investigating him for transferring sensitive U.S. data to China’s National University of Defense Technology.

The U.S. Department of Justice announced Friday that 29-year-old Guan Lei "falsely den[ied] his association with the Chinese military" during interviews with federal law enforcement officials. Lei has since admitted that he participated in Chinese military training.

According to authorities, one of Lei's faculty advisors in China also served in the Chinese military.

"Guan later admitted that he had participated in military training and wore military uniforms while at NUDT…

…NUDT is suspected of procuring U.S.-origin items to develop supercomputers with nuclear explosive applications," the Justice Department said.

The Justice Department further alleged that Lei hid digital files from federal law enforcement and lied about having contact with the Chinese consulate during his time in the U.S.

An FBI affidavit said the hard drive "was irreparably damaged and that all previous data associated with the hard drive appears to have been removed deliberately and by force."

Lei faces one felony count of destruction of evidence, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years.

UCLA did not return a request for comment from Campus Reform in time for publication.

The Justice Department's announcement comes just days after it announced the arrest of a Texas A&M professor for his alleged ties to China.

In recent months, Campus Reform has covered multiple arrests of college professors and researchers who have been arrested over their alleged connections to the Chinese Communist Party.

U.S. Sanctions Russian Research Institute That Developed Covid-19 Vaccine

The US Commerce Department blacklisted a Russian research institute that helped create the world’s first Covid-19 vaccine.

Russia won the race to develop the first vaccine against the novel coronavirus. The United States has responded by slapping sanctions on a Russian research facility involved in creating it.

The US government has blacklisted several Russian scientific institutes, including the Russian Defense Ministry’s 48th Central Research Institute, which has worked with other non-military medical centers to develop and test the world’s first Covid-19 vaccine.

In the midst of the global coronavirus pandemic and a historic economic crisis, Washington has escalated its global campaign of economic warfare, imposing sanctions on foreign adversaries and announcing new punitive measures on a nearly daily basis.

More than one-fourth of people on Earth live in countries that are suffering from US sanctions.

In April, a Russian company sent ventilators to the United States as a form of humanitarian aid, to help overwhelmed hospitals treat coronavirus patients. It was later revealed that this Russian firm had been under US sanctions since 2014.

State-led Covid-19 vaccine research in Russia, China, Cuba beat US ‘public-private partnership’

The Russian government announced this August that it had registered the world’s first Covid-19 vaccine, called Sputnik V.

Sputnik V was developed by the Russian Health Ministry’s Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology. This scientific facility created the vaccine in a joint research project with the Russian Defense Ministry’s 48th Central Research Institute.

On August 27, the US Commerce Department imposed sanctions on Russia’s 48th Central Research Institute, blacklisting the scientific body.

While Russia took a state-led approach to create a coronavirus vaccine, the Trump administration announced a “public-private partnership” in May. The program, called “Operation Warp Speed,” saw the US government dole out billions of tax dollars to Big Pharma companies.

The Trump administration awarded massive contracts to private corporations like Novavax, Pfizer, and Moderna, while Trump reportedly offered “large sums of money” for exclusive rights to a vaccine being developed by a German firm so it could be sold for profit.

But the US public-private partnership was unable to develop a vaccine before foreign countries with government-led research efforts did. Besides Russia, a state-owned Chinese company says its vaccine will be ready by the end of 2020, while Cuba is doing clinical trials for a vaccine of its own.

US blacklists Russian research institutes

The US Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security announced a series of new sanctions measures on Russian research centers in the US government’s federal register on August 27.

Washington accused the blacklisted institutes of being associated with Russian chemical and biological weapons programs. The Kremlin denied this, calling the accusation “absolute nonsense.”

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s defamation lawsuit against the New York Times is heading to court. Judge Jed S. Rakoff of Manhattan’s Federal District Court said in his decision that there was “sufficient evidence to allow a rational finder of fact to find actual malice by clear and convincing evidence.”

Palin, like former Covington Catholic student Nicholas Sandman, who won his defamation lawsuit against The Washington Post on his 18th birthday in 2019, is suing on the grounds that the paper defamed her person and is libel for a completely false story about her. In 2008, then Palin, a Republican vice presidential candidate sued over a June 14, 2017 editorial that was published after the horrific shooting in Alexandria, Virginia that almost killed then House Majority Whip Steve Scalise.

In the editorial, the NYT referred to a January 2011 shooting where six people died and Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was seriously wounded. The writer lied saying that Palin’s political action committee had circulated a map before the shooting that showed 20 Democrats including Giffords under “stylized cross hairs,” like the ones at shooting ranges. It wasn’t true.

What we have witnessed happening to the U.S. media since has been astonishing. The media has been weaponized against political opponents in such a way that it clearly has done extreme harm to the nation. It isn’t the watchdog it should be keeping check on the government, exposing corruption and weeding out the bad players. These lawsuits are not easy to win and the cost to hire attorneys who can fight them can be the greatest deterrent. I believe for the most part that’s the reason why these media giants over the years have been so lackadaisical and set aside their own rules to become a part of the system.

Many of the reporters and their editors are no longer protecting the voiceless but their pocketbooks, connections in Washington D.C. and have themselves become addicted to their own celebrity. They see themselves as powerful and they don’t want to lose their invitations to the White House dinners, parties and Washington D.C. elites.

FDA Fires 2 After Blood Plasma PR Disaster Mars Agency

Just days after the Food and Drug Administration was criticized for giving emergency use authorization for blood plasma to treat COVID-19, two senior public relations experts that advise the agency have been fired, the New York Times reported.

Chief spokeswoman for the FDA, Emily Miller, was removed by the agency’s commissioner Dr. Stephen Hahn on Friday, just 11 days after she started the position, the Times noted. The FDA website says Miller worked as Communications Director for the re-election campaign of Sen. Ted Cruz and as a journalist for the right-leaning cable network One America News.

Also terminated was Wayne L. Pines, a public relations consultant for the Department of Health and Human Services, the parent agency of the FDA. According to reports, Pines advised Dr. Hahn to apologize for comments that were misleading about the benefits of using blood plasma to treat COVID-19.

Pines told the Times that he did recommend that Hahn “correct the record,” adding that “if a federal official doesn’t say something right, and chooses to clarify and say that the criticism is justified, that’s refreshing.”

Brian Harrison, HHS’ chief of staff told the Times that the termination of Pines’ contract was "100 percent coincidence. HHS has been reviewing and canceling similar contracts, so I had it sent to our lawyers, who recommended termination. This was routine.”

The FDA came under fire for approving blood plasma after concern was expressed by several medical experts on its effectiveness to treat COVID-19. Medical experts have said that more data is needed to understand blood plasma, and the study that the treatment was authorized under included only a small group of 100 participants.

Evidence that masks protect from Covid ‘not very strong in either direction,’ says UK’s deputy chief medical officer

Despite mask mandates imposed to stop the spread of Covid-19, the UK Deputy Chief Medical Officer Jenny Harries cast doubt on their effectiveness, adding yet another wrinkle to the raging debate about face coverings.

As schools prepare to reopen, the government has released guidance that will require students and teachers to wear masks in communal areas. Masks are currently required in hospitals, on public transport, and in many businesses.

In a Q and A session with Prime Minister Boris Johnson, however, Harries pushed back against the theory that masks help stop the spread of Covid-19, adding further confusion to experts’ changing attitudes in the area.

Asked by a parent about deaf children being able to properly learn, Johnson clarified that he does not want to see face coverings in classrooms.

“The evidence on face coverings is not very strong in either direction. We are continuing to learn as the Prime Minister has said about how the virus transmits and it may be we do change advice in the future, that’s because we’re watching the science,” Harries added, saying masks will only be required in situations where social distancing is not possible.

“At the moment the evidence is pretty stable, but it can be very reassuring in those enclosed environments for children and for teachers as well, to know that people are taking precautions,” she continued.

Harries has cast doubt on the effectiveness of mask-wearing in the past, saying in March it can have an opposite effect and actually “trap the virus in the mask” and force people to breathe it in. At the time, she said wearing a mask was “not a good idea.”

Other experts were similarly skeptical and recommended only people feeling symptoms wear face coverings, with some even warning against mask buying so as not to flood the market and make it harder for medical staff to get proper supplies.

In April, opinions began to change as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and others recommended mask wearing, and mandates began being put in place.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said face-coverings provide “limited” protection for the virus when announcing coverings would be mandated on public transports.

Some studies have found face coverings can help limit the spread of the virus, but mandates have led to a heated debate around the world.

In the US, Democratic Party presidential nominee Joe Biden has promised a federal mask mandate if he is elected, something President Donald Trump has been resistant to, instead leaving mandates up to individual states.

UAE Condemned Turkish Intervention In Syria In Letter To UN

The United Arab Emirates has accused Turkey of seeding chaos in the Arab World and occupying Syria in a new letter to the United Nations Security Council.

The UAE’s message, which was delivered on August 28, was an apparent response to a recent message from Turkey to the Security Council. Ankara accused Abu Dhabi of suppressing democratic movements in the Middle East, as well as of killing people in Yemen.

In its message, the UAE said Turkey is attempting to shift international attention from its dangerous acts, including its illegitimate operations in Syria. The UAE also referred to Turkey as a hub for ISIS terrorists moving to central Asia and Afghanistan.

“Turkey is threatening to use migrants to advance its megalomaniac goals,” the message reads.

Tension between the UAE and Turkey escalated earlier this month after the announcement of the peace deal between Abu Dhabi and Tel Aviv. Ankara, which maintains official relations with Tel Aviv since 1949, slammed Abu Dhabi over the deal.

The UAE, which has been openly working to counter Turkey’s influence in the Middle East, restored relations with Syria more than a year ago. Abu Dhabi reopened its embassy in Damascus in December 2018.

According to several reports, the UAE is supporting Syria’s war on Turkish-backed militants and terrorist groups, which are occupying vast parts of the country.

The UAE’s message indicates that the country is not backing down from its stand against Turkey’s moves in the region. Abu Dhabi is clearly determined to foil Ankara’s plans.

Pictures from the demonstration show Trafalgar Square almost full of protesters - none of whom are wearing masks - holding signs that brand the pandemic as a 'hoax'. When full, the square holds up to 35,000 people.

Other signs claimed masks reduce immunity and likened the restrictions to 'child torture'. One person held a homemade placard on which he had scrawled 'no to mandatory vaccines.'

Jeremy Corbyn's brother Piers and conspiracy theorist David Icke were in attendance, the latter of whom urged police to 'stop serving the psychopaths' and join those protesting in a speech addressing the cheering crowd.

Video from the scene showed organisers label the government as 'terrorists who are waging a war on the people of this country'.

One man says: 'This is a political agenda to commit mass genocide on the population. That is their agenda.'

Berlin police halt 'anti-COVID' rally as European cities protest virus curbs

Police in Berlin broke up a protest against coronavirus curbs on Saturday and arrested 300 people after demonstrators failed to social distance and wear masks, as other European cities held similar "anti-COVID" marches.

Police in the German capital disbanded the mass protest against COVID-19 curbs just several hours after it started.

"Unfortunately, we have no other option," Berlin police said on Twitter. "All the measures taken so far have not led to compliance with the conditions."

Around 38,000 coronavirus sceptics marched in Berlin after a court initially gave the go-ahead for the demonstration.

"We're here to say: we have to be careful! Coronavirus crisis or not, we must defend our freedoms," Christina Holz, a 22-year-old student, told AFP.

With new coronavirus cases rising since lockdown measures were lifted several months ago, European countries have implemented tighter regulations to contain the outbreak that has killed more than 800,000 globally.

In London, around 1,000 demonstrators calling for an "end to medical tyranny" gathered in Trafalgar Square.

In Paris, up to 300 protesters marched against the government decision to make mask wearing compulsory in all public areas.

"I am simply a citizen angry against the freedom restricting measures which have no medical justification," said Sophie, a Parisian who took part in the protest.

Protesters in the French capital, some waving placards stating "Stop the lies", were quickly surrounded by police who handed out 135 euro fines to those not wearing masks.

Some 1,000 people in the Swiss city of Zurich also called for a "return to freedom".

Berlin authorities previously banned the demonstration, fearing protesters would not carry out social distancing requirements or wear face masks.

Protest organisers and supporters were outraged by the move and flooded social media with messages they would protest anyway, with some calling for violence.

But on Friday evening, Berlin's administrative court sided with the demonstrators, saying there was no indication that organisers would "deliberately ignore" social distancing rules and endanger public health.

Coronavirus vaccine candidate approved for emergency use in China

Sinovac Biotech's coronavirus vaccine candidate CoronaVac has been approved for emergency use as part of a programme initiated in July in China to vaccinate high-risk groups such as medical staff.

China National Biotec Group (CNBG), a unit of state-owned pharmaceutical giant China National Pharmaceutical Group (Sinopharm), said on social media platform WeChat that it had obtained emergency use approval for a coronavirus vaccine candidate.

CNBG, which has two vaccine candidates in phase 3 clinical trials, did not reveal which of its vaccines had been cleared for emergency use.

China has been giving experimental coronavirus vaccines to high-risk groups since July, and a health official told state media that authorities could consider modestly expanding the emergency use programme to try to prevent possible outbreaks during the autumn and winter.
