Trump Administration To Invest $1 Billion In Quantum Computing, AI

The Trump Administration announced awards of more than $1 billion Wednesday for the establishment of 12 new artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum information science (QIS) research & development institutes across the United States. The administration says it is taking the action to ensure American leadership in what it termed “industries of the future,” which include 5G and other critical technologies.

Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sam Arrested Prominent Activist In Greater Idlib

Security forces of al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) have arrested Fayez al-Daghim, a prominent opposition activist in Greater Idlib.

Al-Daghim was reportedly arrested on August 24 after getting into an argument with the traffic police of HTS’ Salvation Government in Idlib city. The activist’s phone and car were seized. He was also prevented from contacting his parents. His current location remains unknown.

Like many activists, al-Daghim produced and distributed propaganda supporting armed groups in Greater Idlib, including HTS. He mainly worked for the Turkey-based Syria TV.

HTS is under immense public pressure over the arrest of American journalist Bilal Abdul Kareem and British aid worker Tauqir Sharif.

Last week, foreign jihadists threatened HTS security forces and accused the group’s leader, Abu Mohamad al-Julani, of “betraying” and “selling” them.

According to a new report by the pro-opposition Syrian Network for Human Rights, at least 2116 civilians are currently arrested by HTS. The fate of 85% of them remain unknown.

HTS is constantly working to tighten its grip over Greater Idlib. Turkey, which maintains a fairly large force in the region, is turning a blind eye to the terrorist group’s acts. Ankara’s passive behavior seems to encourage al-Julani.

Transgender Policy Robs Girls of Athletic Opportunities – as Born Males Beat Them Competing as Women — Lawsuit By Christian Group Seeks Reversal of Competition Rules

The Alliance Defending Freedom is an American conservative Christian nonprofit organization that advocates, trains, and funds issues of “religious freedom, sanctity of life, and marriage and family”.

One of their causes is what some might call a Christian assault on transgender women and is sure to rile up many in that movement.

The ADF doesn’t think born men should be allowed to compete with born women in sports. This opposes the argument that a person’s mental gender is their true gender regardless of the gender assigned at birth.

The gist of the argument, as I understand it, is that if someone born male decides to be female, or vice versa, this must be accepted, even embraced. No discrimination should be permitted under law. In other words, assigned at birth gender is irrelevant, an accident of nature, and should not confine the ego or mind.

It is the gender that the individual mentally assigns itself which must be accepted as the gender of that person.

This seems to be creating a problem in Connecticut, and elsewhere, where respect for mental not physical gender prevails and permits born males/[who are] mental-females [transgender] to compete in sports against born females/who are also mentally female [women].

Many Christians, such as those at ADF, do not agree with the argument that people have the right to change genders after God assigned them one at birth. This becomes a problem, they say, especially in sports, where born males are generally better than born females.

When born males/mental females compete with born females, the born males often win, depriving born females of victories they used to have prior to competing with born males who are not recognized as female.

The Olympics have sought to work this out by requiring born males/mental females to undergo at least two years of hormone therapy to counter-balance “male features” of physiology by getting the testosterone level to zero. The born males may still have a penis, but they likely will have breasts and possibly a feminine pattern of hair, fat, and muscle distribution.

It cannot however undo changes produced by puberty, which means that men, even with hormone therapy will likely be bigger boned and have more upper body strength. The medications used include estrogens, antiandrogens, progestogens, and gonadotropin-releasing hormone modulators.

Here are some rules in various states on men and women competing:

In Indiana, schools rely on anatomical sex, requiring gender reassignment surgery for trans athletes to participate in the sport of their identified gender.

Nebraska has formed a Gender Identity Eligibility Committee that decides on a case-by-case basis of how each transgender athlete can participate as their self-identified gender.

Texas, Alabama, North Carolina, and Kentucky require trans athletes to compete in their biological sex.

In Alaska, Connecticut, Georgia, Kansas, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, each school district makes their own decision on how to include transgender athletes.

Maine gives approval for students to choose which team they wish to play on, essentially eliminating gender divisions.

New Jersey and New Mexico require that trans athletes provide evidence that they have transitioned or are transitioning.

Missouri and Ohio require athletes to undergo hormone treatment. Ohio requires that the athlete must have been on the hormones for at least a year prior to competing.

Oregon and Idaho allow those who identify as male to participate on male teams, and they are then on excluded from girls’ competitions. Those transitioning from male to female must be on hormone treatment for at least a year, which some say is prejudicial to trans females.

In those states where no hormone transitioning is required, this creates another challenge.

A deep, dark secret might be leaked and spoil your candidate’s popularity. A natural, or a man-made, disaster might erupt and change the entire calculus of a race overnight.

Which is why I hesitate to leap from the Democratic and Republican conventions that just ended to the natural prediction that Donald Trump is likely to win in something approaching a landslide. Were the election held right now, today, I believe that he would win with a commanding margin, far beyond the margin of fraud or (as a lawyer friend likes to put it) beyond any margin of litigation. But November 3 is still some 60 days off. And the party that brought us the Robert Mueller entertainment, the Ukrainian telephone call distraction, the party that managed to weaponize a novel virus developed by China and deploy it against President Trump, and then encourage its proxies to riot and scream that everyone (except themselves) was racist — well, such a party is essentially unaccountable. Who knows what they will do next? Reserve Bank Australia predicts a potential 40 per cent drop in house prices

We’ve been riding on wave that’s seen us boom for decades – but now it could all come crashing down.

New research shows what will happen if house prices fall. The news is bad. It turns out Australia is so puffed up on housing wealth that if house prices fall they drag down a huge section of our economy with them.

The Reserve Bank of Australia put out new research on Tuesday with some dire warnings. RBA investigated the effect of a 40 per cent fall in house prices – a fall they described as “extreme but plausible”. That would mean a $500,000 home falls to $300,000 and a $1 million home falls to $600,000.

They chose that figure because such a fall has happened in other countries during the global financial crisis (GFC). They also assume rising unemployment falls and a sharemarket crash.

They then ran a few scenarios to see what will happen. The bank was mostly trying to investigate Australia’s record high household debt. As we know, Australians have borrowed up to their eyeballs. We have some very big mortgages. But what they found is a different weakness.

How The CIA Used The Media to Ensnare Michael Flynn

If Vladimir Putin was willing to help President Barack Obama seal the misbegotten Iranian nuclear deal, Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, then chief of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA),was not. His resistance made him a target, especially once he started advising candidate Donald Trump. As to who launched the disinformation campaign against Flynn, the jury is still out. Best evidence, however, suggests forces within the CIA working in tandem with its friends in the media.

The co-conspirators started publicly setting the trap with a February 2016 Reuters article teasingly titled, “Trump being advised by ex-U.S. Lieutenant General who favors closer Russia ties.” https://reut.rs/2EwzoEL This was a bold gambit. Obama praised Putin a year after Putin annexed the Crimea. That invasion was so much water under the bridge for Obama but apparently not for Flynn. Just months later, it was considered newsworthy that Flynn would advise Trump to “work more closely with Russia to resolve global security issues.”

“Flynn raised eyebrows among some U.S. foreign policy veterans,” wrote Steve Holland and Mark Hosenball of Reuters, “when he was pictured sitting at the head table with Putin at a banquet in Moscow late last year celebrating Russia Today, an international broadcasting network funded by the Russian government.” The reporters’ “three sources,” all said to be “former foreign policy officials,” failed to mention that Flynn had been briefed by the DIA before the dinner and debriefed afterwards.

What made me suspicious about this article was the Mark Hosenball byline. Hosenball appears to have been carrying water for the intelligence community (IC) for at least twenty years, maybe twice that long. To say the least, he has a curious background.

Hosenball moved to England when he was 17 to attend school. After spending a year in England and three in Ireland, he moved back to England to become a reporter. This information comes from a 1977 British appeals court document explaining why the United Kingdom chose to deport the 25-year-old Hosenball “in the interests of national security.”

“The Secretary of State believes that Mr. Hosenball is a danger to this country. So much so that his presence here is unwelcome and he can no longer be permitted to stay,” reads the document. Reportedly, Hosenball was one of a group of people who were “trying to obtain information of a very sensitive character about our security arrangements.” The document does not identify on whose behalf Hosenball was allegedly spying, but it affirms the government’s decision to deport him nonetheless.

House Committee Launches Contempt Proceedings Against Pompeo

Democrat Eliot Engel said the decision follows the U.S. secretary of state’s refusal to hand over records related to the impeachment proceedings.

The Democrat-controlled House Foreign Affairs Committee announced Friday that it is launching contempt proceedings against Secretary of State Mike Pompeo over his “alarming disregard” for the law and ongoing defiance of subpoenas for documents in two separate investigations.

Rep. Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.), chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said in a statement that Pompeo “seems to think the office he holds, the department he runs, the personnel he oversees, and the taxpayer dollars that pay for all of it are there for his personal and political benefit.”

“From Mr. Pompeo’s refusal to cooperate with the impeachment inquiry to his willingness to bolster a Senate Republican-led smear against the president’s political rivals to his speech to the [Republican National Convention] which defied his own guidance and possibly the law, he has demonstrated alarming disregard for the laws and rules governing his own conduct and for the tools the Constitution provides to prevent government corruption,” said Engel, who was defeated by progressive educator Jamaal Bowman in New York’s June primary.

Engel said his panel had “no further option but to begin drafting a resolution finding Secretary Pompeo in contempt of Congress” after the nation’s top diplomat refused to hand over records related to the impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump.

The New York Democrat also pointed to Pompeo’s withholding of documents purportedly related to Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden — records that the secretary of state has already given to two Republican-led Senate committees. In a statement announcing a subpoena for the documents last month, Engel accused Pompeo of turning the State Department “into an arm of the Trump campaign.”

“After trying to stonewall virtually every oversight effort by the Foreign Affairs Committee in the last two years,” said Engel, “Mr. Pompeo is more than happy to help Senate Republicans advance their conspiracy theories about the Bidens.”

Acting Assistant Secretary of State Ryan Kaldahl informed Engel in a letter (pdf) Thursday that Pompeo does not intend to comply with the subpoena.

Following Engel’s announcement of the contempt proceedings, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, tweeted Friday that “you don’t get to repeatedly defy congressional subpoenas and undermine the Constitution with no consequences.”

The contempt proceedings come as Pompeo is also under investigation by Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Texas) — vice chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee — for addressing the Republican National Convention this week while on a taxpayer-funded trip to Jerusalem.

“The Trump administration and Secretary Pompeo have shown a gross disregard not only of basic ethics, but also a blatant willingness to violate federal law for political gain,” Castro said in a statement Tuesday. “Congress has a responsibility to stand up for the rule of law and hold them accountable for this corrupt behavior.”

Racing officials probe horse racing outfit over cryptocurrency scam

Australian racing officials are investigating a leading thoroughbred operation after its owner was accused in a US court of being involved in an international money-laundering scheme linked to a fake cryptocurrency.

Phoenix Thoroughbreds, which co-owns Australian group 1 winner Farnan who is trained by Gai Waterhouse, was banned from racing in France earlier this month after a prosecution witness alleged in a New York court that its Dubai-based owner Amer Abdulaziz Salman had stolen $161 million in the OneCoin cryptocurrency scheme.

OneCoin has been described as one of the world’s biggest cryptocurrency scams and is estimated to have swindled $7.2 billion from investors across Europe, Africa and Australia.

Investors purchased the virtual coins after being told they would skyrocket in value, but they were never able to cash them out. At least one Australian victim lost $100,000 in retirement funds.

Racing NSW confirmed it was investigating Phoenix Thoroughbreds, while Racing Victoria said it was in contact with international jurisdictions about the allegations.

Phoenix recently pulled out of racing in the UK and released a statement reaffirming its long-term commitment to Australian racing, which Mr Abdulaziz described as "a cornerstone of our business".

The operation owns more than 100 horses in Australia including the recently retired two-time group 1 winning sprinter Loving Gaby, who clocked up $2.2 million in prize money.

The 2020 Golden Slipper-winning Farnan, trained by Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, was purchased for $550,000. Farnan has won $2.5 million in prize money and is on track for a lucrative spring carnival. Ms Waterhouse and Mr Bott were contacted for comment.

Phoenix has denied all allegations of wrongdoing.
