Web security service Cloudflare sends DOZENS of websites & online games down after ‘third-party transit provider incident’

Cloudflare, a popular service designed to provide security and keep websites online, has run into technical problems, sending down multiple websites and spoiling the weekend for online gamers.

Widespread internet outages were reported across both the United States and Europe on Sunday.

Services such as the Discord chat, Xbox Live and PlayStation Network gaming platforms, the video-on-demand Hulu network and others have been affected by the connectivity problems.

Many popular MMO games (that’s ‘massively multiplayer online’, for those not in the know) experienced outages too, with gamers taking to Twitter to express their anger about the outage.

The issue turned out to be primarily related to Cloudflare, a service providing online security and protecting websites from malicious distributed denial-of-service attacks. The company blamed the outage internet provider CenturyLink for taking down Cloudflare and thereby its customers.

“Today, we saw a widespread internet outage online that impacted multiple providers,” Cloudflare’s spokeswoman Laurel Toney said. “Cloudflare’s automated systems detected the problem and routed around them, but the extent of the problem required manual intervention as well.”

It’s the second major outage Cloudflare has experienced in recent weeks. In mid-July, the company experienced a fatal router error that brought down not only its own operations, but a large chunk of the internet.

South Africa: President Says His Own Party ‘Deeply Implicated’ in Coronavirus Corruption

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa admitted his left-wing African National Congress (ANC) party is “deeply implicated” in corruption as evidence continues to emerge of widespread “looting” of the country’s $26 billion rescue package.

Addressing Parliament on Thursday, Ramaphosa authorized the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to start probing allegations of graft related to the rescue packages, which was meant to help South Africans deal with the economic impact of the global pandemic.

“The allegations of corruption in the procurement of goods and services for our country’s response to the coronavirus pandemic has caused outrage among South Africans and among us in the executive,” said Ramaphosa. “It is disgraceful that at this time of national crisis, there are companies and individuals who seek to criminally benefit from our efforts to protect people’s health and save lives.”

Chinese Communists Remove over 900 Crosses from Christian Churches

Officials of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) forcibly removed more than 900 crosses from Christian churches in the eastern province of Anhui during the first half of 2020, Bitter Winter reported Friday.

In June, it was reported that authorities had already removed crosses from over 250 state-controlled Three-Self churches in the Anhui province during the first four months of the year. Updated information reveals that officials eliminated crosses from an additional 656 Christian churches in the province over the first half of this year, bringing the total to over 900.

Anhui has the second-largest Christian population in China, and local authorities there have zealously sought to implement Beijing’s order to eliminate crosses from church buildings, threatening sanctions to those who fail to comply.

“If a church refuses to remove its cross, congregation members may lose their social benefits, like pensions and poverty-alleviation subsidies, and possibilities for their children’s future employment will be affected,” explained one member of a Three-Self church in the Yingdong district of Fuyang.

The cross-removal campaign is part of secretary Xi Jinping’s broader Sinicization program aimed at ridding China of western symbols and values, including those of Christianity.

“United Front Work Department officials said that all crosses taller than government buildings must be demolished because they overshadow state institutions,” said a member of the Hancheng Church in Hanshan county. “Only churches that look like enterprises are considered legal. To ‘sinicize’ Christianity, Xi Jinping does not allow churches to have Western crosses.”

Government officials have warned that “protesting cross demolitions means protesting against the government,” Bitter Winter noted, citing a local Christian. “Even though it is a symbol of our faith, who dares to disobey the central government order?”

Officials often carry out the demolition of crosses in the middle of the night to minimize resistance from the faithful. On certain occasions, demolition teams have been accompanied by hundreds of police officers to quell protests.

As part of its ongoing Sinicization program, CCP authorities have threatened poor Christian villagers with the loss of their welfare benefits unless they remove Christian images from their homes and replace them with portraits of Chairman Mao Zedong and President Xi Jinping.

In so doing, the CCP has sought to channel religious fervor in the country toward the Party rather than God.

Last May, an official in the eastern province of Shandong raided the home of a local Christian and hung pictures of Mao and Xi Jinping on the wall in place of Christian images.

“These are the greatest gods. If you want to worship somebody, they are the ones,” the official told them.

Israel Engaged in 'Many More' Secret Talks With Arab Leaders on Establishing Ties, Netanyahu Says

Earlier this month, Israel signed a landmark agreement brokered by the United States that paved the way for establishing diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates, making the Gulf monarchy the third Arab country to forge ties with Israel.

Israel is holding behind-closed-doors talks with Arab leaders on establishing bilateral ties, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday, following talks with Senior White House adviser Jared Kushner and US National Security Adviser Robert O'Brian.

"Two years ago, I visited Oman, one year ago, I visited Chad, half a year ago I met with the leader of Sudan. And these are a few of the publicised steps. There are many more unpublicised meetings with Arab and Muslim leaders to normalise relations with the state of Israel", Netanyahu said.

Kushner and O'Brien arrived in Israel to discuss the country’s normalisation of ties with the United Arab Emirates in the wake of the signing of an agreement earlier this month on the establishment of full diplomatic ties.

UAE Orders Cancellation of Economic Boycott Against Israel

The deal, announced on 13 August by US President Donald Trump, also paves the way for an exchange of embassies and the conclusion of a number of treaties in various fields of cooperation. If concluded, it will make the UAE the third Arab country to have a full peace deal with Israel after Egypt in 1979 and Jordan in 1994.

On Saturday, UAE President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan issued a decree on abolishing the economic boycott of Israel, allowing companies and individual entrepreneurs in the UAE to conclude trade and financial agreements with Israeli businesses, while Israel can export any goods and products to the UAE.

Netanyahu applauded the United Arab Emirates for ending its boycott of the Jewish state, saying the move paved the way for economic cooperation between the two nations.

US Media Complicit Through Silence in Nationwide Rioting, White House Spokesman Claims

The campaign office of Democratic candidate Joe Biden accused US President Donald Trump of inciting violence and failing to unite the country amid Black Lives Matter protests. White House spokesman Hogan Gidley instead slammed Democratic state and city authorities for refusing federal help in quelling the riots.

A spokesman for US President Donald Trump has accused media outlets in the US of ignoring and even being complicit in violence at some Black Lives Matter protests.

Hogan Gidley suggested to Fox News' Media Buzz on Sunday that journalists had suddenly "found Jesus" after Joe Biden acknowledged that the demonstrations were not all peaceful.

"Ninety days we've been talking about the death, the destruction, the looting, the rioting," Gidley said. "The media complicit in that, ignored it for 90 days. And then all of a sudden, a few days ago, Joe Biden says something about violence in our streets and it's incredible, the media found Jesus all of a sudden on the topic."

Gidley laid into Democrat-run city and state governments for refusing Trump's offer of federal security forces to tackle the unrest.

"President Trump has offered to send in federal assets into many towns, many cities across this country," he said. "Democrat-controlled areas, those governors, those mayors refuse to let that happen."

Host Howard Kurtz pointed out the extensive news coverage of the new wave of BLM protests over the May 25 killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, as well as more recent incidents of documented police brutality.

"But with descriptors that they were peaceful," Gidley countered. "Joe Biden himself called them peaceful protests. In fact, he said it was the police that were inciting the violence."

The Trump spokesman said the accusations by Biden's deputy campaign made earlier on Sunday, that the president is inciting violence, are "absolutely ridiculous" and a "flat-out lie."

"The president’s been the one talking about violence in our streets and how we make our families feel safe again," the White House spokesman insisted, adding, "The last couple days have been completely mind-blowing to me and very revealing as to the media's purely political agenda."

The latest outbreak of rioting this weekend was in Kenosha, Wisconsin, after a white police officer shot a Black man, Jacob Blake, seven times in the back after a call to an incident at a home in the city. Blake, facing sexual assault charges, was left paralysed from the waist down.

Joe Biden Says Trump ‘Incitement’ Led to Death of Apparent Trump Supporter in Portland

Former Vice President Joe Biden issued a statement Sunday afternoon in which he blamed President Donald Trump for “incitement” that led to the shooting death of an apparent Trump supporter in Portland, Oregon, on Saturday evening.

A man wearing a “Patriot Prayer” hat who reportedly participated in a caravan of Trump supporters through downtown Portland earlier Saturday evening was shot and killed on the street. Left-wing demonstrators later celebrated his killing.

Biden issued a statement condemning violence “whether on the left or the right,” and blaming Trump for “incitement”:

We must not become a country at war with ourselves. A country that accepts the killing of fellow Americans who do not agree with you. A country that vows vengeance toward one another. But that is the America that President Trump wants us to be, the America he believes we are.

As a country, we must condemn the incitement of hate and resentment that led to this deadly clash. It is not a peaceful protest when out go out spoiling for a fight. What does President Trump think will happen when he continues to insist on fanning the flamed of hate and division in our society and using the politics of fear to whip up his supporters? He is recklessly encouraging violence. He may believe that tweeting about law and order makes him strong — but his failure to call on supporters to stop seeking violence shows just how weak he is.

Biden did not cite any specific statement or action by the president other than tweeting about “law and order.”

Notably, Biden has campaigned on a false claim that Trump praised neo-Nazis in Charlottesville, Virginia, whom Trump “condemned totally.”

Biden has also said that he would “beat the hell out of Trump” if they were in high school.

He was widely criticized for failing to condemn rioting in Kenosha, Wisconsin, until lives were lost last week.

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler Blames Trump for Violence that Led to Death of Apparent Trump Supporter

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler declared Sunday afternoon that President Donald Trump was to blame for the violence that, he said, led to the shooting death of a right-wing demonstrator on Saturday evening.

A man — as yet unidentified — was shot and killed on the street after a caravan of Trump supporters moved through downtown Portland and there were clashes with left-wing activists. The man wore a “Patriot Prayer” hat and was reportedly among the Trump supporters who had participated in the caravan.

Police held a press conference on Sunday afternoon, suggesting that details about the killing would be provided. Instead, Mayor Wheeler used the occasion to bash Trump.

After denouncing “all violence,” and urging people to “pull together in the name of peace and humanity,” Wheeler boasted of the “historic changes that we’ve already made, and have committed to making, as we re-imagine what public safety and racial justice can look like in our community.” (Portland’s city council voted to “defund the police” by $15 million earlier this year.)

Wheeler then said:

Yesterday’s events began with hundreds of cars filled with supporters of the president, rallying in Clackamas County and then driving through downtown Portland. They were supported and energized by the president himself. President Trump, for four years, we’ve had to live with you and your racist attacks on black people. We learned early about your sexist attitudes towards women. We’ve had to endure clips of you mocking a disabled man. We’ve had to listen to your antidemocratic attacks on journalists. We’ve read your tweets slamming private citizens to the point of receiving death threats, and we’ve listened to your attacks on immigrants. We’ve listened to you label Mexicans, “rapists.” We’ve heard you say that John McCain wasn’t a hero, because he was a prisoner of war. And now, you’re attacking Democratic mayors in the very institutions of democracy that have served his nation well since its founding. Do you seriously wonder, Mr. President, why this is the first time in decades that America has seen this level of violence? It’s you who have created the hate and the division. It’s you who have not found a way to say the names of black people killed by police officers, even as people in law enforcement have. And it’s you who claim that white supremacists are good people. Your campaign of fear is as antidemocratic as anything you’ve done to create hate and vitriol in our beautiful country. You’ve tried to divide us more than any other figure in modern history. And now you want me to stop the violence that you helped create. What America needs is for you to be stopped so that we can come back together as one America…

Wheeler cited several hoaxes, including:

Trump did not mock a disabled reporter

Trump did not call all Mexicans rapists

Trump did not call white supremacists “good people”

Trump met with the families of victims of police violence (and said their names)

After Wheeler spoke, the Portland Police Bureau indicated that no details about the killing would be forthcoming.

The conference was interrupted by shouts from outside the room of “Black lives matter!”

Wheeler added that Trump has been “perpetrating violent and hateful language for years” and claimed that Trump had “encouraged” the Trump supporters “to come into our community.” He added that Trump had “encouraged, or at least tacitly approved, violence” in the past.

Asked by reporters what he could have done to prevent the violence, Wheeler deflected the question, talking about measures that he had supported to reform policing in Portland.

In June, Wheeler joined a violent protest outside the federal courthouse in Portland to show his support. Demonstrators threw flaming objects at the courthouse while Wheeler was present.

California to Set Up Task Force to Examine Slavery Reparations

The California Assembly will vote before Monday on a state Senate bill that creates a task force to look at the question of slavery reparations. The measure passed the state Senate in a bipartisan vote.

The radical left is getting ready for a Biden presidency and a Democratic Party takeover of the U.S. House and Senate by laying the groundwork for their agenda at the state level. Slavery reparations will be close to the top of the radical’s wish list if Biden wins.

Associated Press:

“Let’s be clear: Chattel slavery, both in California and across our nation, birthed a legacy of racial harm and inequity that continues to impact the conditions of Black life in California,” said Democratic Sen. Holly Mitchell of Los Angeles.

She cited disproportionate homelessness, unemployment, involvement in the criminal justice system, lower academic performance and higher health risks during the coronavirus pandemic.

This is a surprise. California was a free state when it entered the Union in 1850 as a result of the Compromise of 1850. But now we’re told there was “chattel slavery” in California.

Well… sorta.

Although California before the Civil War was officially a free state, Mitchell listed legal and judicial steps state officials took at the time to support slavery in Southern states while repressing Blacks.

But what about the fact that white people alive today had nothing to do with slavery?

Sen. Steven Bradford, a Democrat from Gardena who supported the bill, said he only wished it was more than a study.

He noted that Friday marked the 57th anniversary of the March on Washington and The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

“If the 40 acres and a mule that was promised to free slaves were delivered to the descendants of those slaves today, we would all be billionaires,” Bradford said. “I hear far too many people say, ‘Well, I didn’t own slaves, that was so long ago.’ Well, you inherit wealth — you can inherit the debt that you owe to African-Americans.”

Reparations are inherently unfair and no proposal is workable. They are unfair because they assign guilt to an entire race of people. That’s absurd on its face and turns our concept of individual responsibility on its head.

It will be impossible to fairly, not to mention intelligently, divvy up reparations in any rational manner. The questions don’t end with who gets what. How much do the descendants of former slaves get compared to families that arrived from Africa in the last 10 years? More prosaically, how “black” do you have to be to get your money? Will we go full Nazi and start looking at “pure blood” and “half breeds”? Should someone who is only one-quarter black get the same amount as someone who has a higher percentage of “black blood”?

These aren’t idle questions. We’re talking about trillions of dollars in the most massive transfer of wealth in world history. It would be nice if we knew what we were doing before expropriating that kind of cash.

We may get lucky and see the radicals — as radicals are wont to do — blow up their own proposal by squabbling over the details. But this is an issue that won’t go away. Logic doesn’t matter to these people. In fact, it makes them angry when you try to apply logic to the problem. And manipulating street violence to get their way will always be an option for them.
