I think the face/off story is intentionally over the top. It grabs attention, but sounds so far out it can't possibly be real. Conspiracy theory. When the real video comes out and it is something that is easily understandable as real, the reality of it will be amplified by the preconception that it can't be actually true.
Think of key Dem players in a room concocting a scheme to frame POTUS, or hurt a family member to cause him to drop out/resign.
