Two helicopter mechanics serving on an elite nighttime special operations unit, often referred to as the “Night Stalkers,” were killed when their Black Hawk helicopter crashed off the California coast in a training incident.

Fort Bragg officials on Saturday identified the soldiers as 33-year-old Staff Sgt. Vincent Marketta, of Brick, N.J., and Sgt. Tyler Shelton, of San Bernardino, Calif., the Air Force Times reported. They both died from injuries sustained in the aviation accident, which occurred on San Clemente Island Thursday morning.

Another three people were injured but have not been identified.

“The loss of Staff Sgt. Marketta and Sgt. Shelton has left a scar in this Regiment that will never completely heal,” said Col. Andrew R. Graham, commander of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne).

“Their level of dedication to the 160th SOAR (A) and their exemplary service in the Army is the embodiment of what it means to be a Night Stalker and a Soldier. Our priority now is to ensure the Families of our fallen warriors receive our complete support as we work through this tragedy together.”

Marketta, who enlisted in 2011, served as a 15T UH-60 “Black Hawk” Repairer. He was assigned to the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) after completing Advanced Individual Training, and then Regiment’s extensive training and assessment program the following year.

He earned a series of recognitions and awards during his time with the unit, including the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was also deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and sent on several occasions to Iraq in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.

Shelton, also a 15T UH-60 “Black Hawk” Repairer, enlisted in 2016. His awards and decorations include the Army Good Conduct Medal and Afghanistan Campaign Medal.

Both soldiers are slated to be awarded the Meritorious Service Medal posthumously.

See the purple marked areas? Those are DROTAMS and they are usually used for restricing drone flights around certain events and airports. NOTAMs are usually reserved for real aircraft with people on board. So this threw me for a loop. But PF supposes that when it is in the category of "National Defense Airspace", then it warrants an actual NOTAM. This even if it only affects drone operations. Never seen this before.

Has a sort of a playback feature. But once again, it seems that you are going need specific tail numbers or Airports to get flight data. So unless we know what aircraft, or what airport, then it is going be difficult to find out for sure. And all this assumes they are operating outside of "dark" status. Wish I could have found a suitable tool. I was hoping to select KPDX and just rewind the history to last night and see all the traffic in the area. But even if I were able to do that something tells me that it would only display flights into, or out of, the selected airport. So if you had aircraft orbiting downtown Portland that did not originate from KPDX then they would not even display? Make sense? It would be nice to have a little more utility available in the data and how it is displayed. And it's probably coming. But I don't think we are there yet. If I have missed something that is out there, then please speak up and let me know.
