Director Of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe Says He Has Filed Multiple ‘Crimes Reports’ Over Classified Leaks

John Ratcliffe, the director of national intelligence, said Sunday he has filed multiple “crimes reports” regarding alleged leaks of classified information to the media.

“When I become aware of intelligence community information that is disclosed unlawfully, I do what’s called a crimes report. I’ve done that now on a number of occasions, and so those investigations are moving forward,” Ratcliffe said on Fox News’s “Sunday Morning Futures.”

Ratcliffe said that the timing of any prosecutions from the investigations “would be something that the FBI would have to address.”

“I think that they will down the road,” he added.

Ratcliffe, who was confirmed to his current post on May 21, announced Saturday that he is revamping intelligence community briefings provided to Congress, citing a series of leaks of classified information to news outlets regarding Russia’s efforts to interfere in the 2020 election.

Ratcliffe said he wants to avoid “a repeat of what happened a month ago,” a reference to a briefing he gave to all members of Congress regarding foreign governments’ efforts to interfere in American politics.

Ratcliffe said that he asked lawmakers not to disclose any of the classified information from the briefing, but he asserted that “within minutes of that one of those briefings ending, a number of members of Congress went to a number of different publications and leaked classified information.”

He said that the leaks were “for political purposes” to create what he said is a false narrative “that somehow Russia is a greater national security threat than China.”

Ratcliffe’s decision to limit election-related intelligence briefings prompted outrage from Democrats who say that he is withholding information about Russian meddling to provide political cover for President Donald Trump.

Ratcliffe did not provide details about which leaks have spurred him to file crimes reports. Republicans have long called on the Justice Department to more aggressively investigate leaks that sprung during the FBI and special counsel’s Trump-Russia investigations.

Elon Musk unveils brain chip implant: 'It's like a Fitbit in your skull'

Tech mogul Elon Musk unveiled his latest foray into science fiction Friday night: a brain chip implant to allow people who are paralyzed to operate technology, such as smartphones or robotic limbs, with their thoughts.

"I think it's going to blow your minds," Musk said. "It's like a Fitbit in your skull with tiny wires."

But the coin-sized chips, developed by Musk's secretive startup Neuralink, are a ways off from being useful to humans. Friday's livestreamed YouTube demonstration was on a pig named Gertrude, who Musk said had a brain chip implanted two months earlier.

As the pig shuffled around its pen sniffing hay, a computer beeped and blue wavelengths on the screen jumped up and down. Musk said the computer was measuring Gertrude's brain activity. "The beeps you are hearing are real-time signals," he said. "The future's going to be weird."

But the "move fast and break things" ethos that defines Silicon Valley has not always been kind to inventors who try their luck in bio technology. Medical innovation is notoriously slow. Conducting clinical trials to prove the safety and efficacy of medical devices can take years.

Perhaps the most notorious example of the tension between innovation and safety is blood diagnostics startup Theranos and its founder, Elizabeth Holmes. In a rush to get her product to market, Holmes took shortcuts and made exaggerated and false claims about her company's technology, according to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, which charged Holmes with raising money from investors in an "elaborate, years-long fraud." Holmes now faces up to 20 years in prison.

Musk nodded to the regulatory hurdles that Neuralink must clear on Friday. "We're making good progress toward clinical studies," he said. "I'm excited to announce that we received a breakthrough device designation from the FDA in July."

"I want to be clear," he continued. "We're working closely with the FDA. We'll be extremely rigorous. We'll significantly exceed the FDA guidelines for safety. We will make this as safe as possible."

Musk's track record on safety and science has been mixed.

The recent successes of SpaceX came after federal regulators examined fatal crashes linked to autopilot systems in Teslas.

In March, Musk dismissed the seriousness of COVID-19, claiming on Twitter that there would probably be close to zero new infections in the U.S. by the end of April. In May, Musk defied local stay-at-home orders and opened his California car factory in the midst of a pandemic.

As of late August, infections in the U.S. had topped 5.9 million and deaths had exceeded 182,000.

Family mourns Harrisburg teen after deadly shooting

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – A Harrisburg family is mourning a teenage boy who was killed in a Saturday shooting.

The family of 16 year old Kyan King said he was shot this afternoon near 18th and Forster Streets.

Now they’re mourning the boy they remember as smart and sweet, with a goofy laugh.

Family set up a memorial on Saturday on the street where the shooting happened. They brought balloons and 16 candles, one for each year of Kyan’s life.

His sister Nyairrea Jones said they’re heartbroken by his loss.

“We all loved Ky Ky we love him a lot,” Jones said. “My little brother. Everything about him. I miss it all.”

Family member Destiny Williams shared some of her favorite memories.

“He had a very big laugh that you could hear all the way upstairs on the 3rd floor. You could always hear him laughing and talking and everything,” Williams said.

The family is also outraged at the man police arrested for the shooting.

“A lot of anger. A lot of hurt. A lot of confusion as to why that man would want to do something to an innocent 16 year old,” Williams said. “That’s something that I would never fathom. Like how do you do that to someone, especially him.”

That man, Orlando Duarte was arrested on Saturday and charged with homicide. Criminal records show he also served time for raping a child back in 2010.

Kyan’s family worries he was the latest victim.

“Keep your kids close because there’s predators out here. Ones just walking amongst us. Ones we don’t even know about,” Jones said.

They couldn’t be there for his last moments. But they are there now, showing their love through a memorial.

“We weren’t here for him but we want him to know that we were here. We were here to make sure that he’s ok and that he knows that he’s loved. He was very very loved, by everyone here around him,” Williams said.
