French lieutenant-colonel serving with NATO arrested for spying for Russia

French authorities are reportedly investigating a senior military officer, who is serving with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in Italy, for spying on behalf of Russia, according to a news report from France. On Sunday, France’s Minister of the Armed Forces, Florence Parly (pictured), gave a press conference in Paris, during which she provided limited information about the ongoing investigation. Parly said she could confirm that “a senior officer” in the French military was undergoing “legal proceedings” relating to a “security breach”. She refused to provide specific details on the case.

Afghan president appoints council to decide peace deal with Taliban

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has established a 46-person council that will bear responsibility for making the final decision about inking a peace agreement with the Taliban.

The council, which is distinct from a 21-person group tasked with negotiating with the Taliban, "will have the final say and will ultimately decide on the points that the negotiating team takes up with the Taliban," according to the Associated Press.
