Brown’s plan followed the shooting death Saturday of Aaron J. Danielson, who was affiliated with right-wing group Patriot Prayer, at a demonstration staged by the group. The shooting followed hours of protesters and counterprotesters physically fighting, spraying mace and shooting paintballs at each other…Neither Portland police nor Brown’s office said whether the state reinforcements will be used only for nightly protests or if the extra support will extend future to right-wing demonstrations, whose intentional intersection with Black Lives Matter protests is where most bloody violence occurs…Pashley said that five times out of the 90-some nights, 29 protesters have been arrested. Police have steadily started to arrest more people per night in the past few weeks…Most of the arrests have been for misdemeanors such as interfering with a peace officer or disorderly conduct, which do not involve attacking officers, damaging property or resisting arrest…The estimate of 200 people committing crimes is a larger number than elected officials and the Portland Police Chief Chuck Lovell have said in the past – usually characterized as a “small handful” of protesters…Daryl Turner, president of the Portland police union, also called for a “zero tolerance” policy for violence in Portland, though it is unclear what exactly that would entail.
“The same offenders are arrested night after night, only to be released by the court and not charged with a crime by the DA’s office,” said Clackamas County Sheriff Craig Roberts. “The next night they are back at it, endangering the lives of law enforcement and the community all over again.”…
