House opens probe into White House trade adviser Peter Navarro

Aug. 31 (UPI) – The U.S. House on Monday opened an investigation into federal contracts negotiated by White House trade adviser Peter Navarro, following the cancelation of a ventilator contract with Netherland-based Royal Philips.

Chairman of the House subcommittee on economic and consumer policy, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Ill., told CNBC that the panel has opened a probe into Navarro as part of an ongoing investigation into contracts entered into by the Trump administration related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Under the management of Peter Navarro, senior adviser to President Trump, the administration was taken advantage of by Philips Respironics when negotiating the price of life-saving ventilators," Krishnamoorthi said.

D.C. Circuit Court ruling weakens House subpoena power

Aug. 31 (UPI) – The power of U.S. House investigative committees to demand in-person testimony during hearings was weakened Monday when a District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals three-judge panel ruled 2 to 1 that the lawmakers have no authority to issue subpoenas without first passing a law permitting it.

Advisers to President Donald Trump have ignored legal summonses by House lawmakers, including a subpoena to Trump's private attorney and former White House Counsel Don McGahn. McGahn defied a subpoena to testify in May 2019 about possible obstruction of justice in the investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election.

The panel on Monday said Congress has passed no statute permitting the House to issue subpoenas for congressional hearings, and must pass a new law before courts can enforce legal demands to appear.

World’s richest man, who has history of working with the CIA, gets official approval to unleash Amazon drones on the US

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has given approval for Amazon to operate its Prime Air delivery drones, an idea billionaire owner Jeff Bezos first introduced in 2013.

The approval means the drones can be operated “beyond the visual line of sight” by operators. Amazon says it will soon begin testing the delivery technology, which is supposed to cut wait times for orders from days to hours and eventually minutes. The company also plans on eventually introducing the delivery practice across the globe.

“This certification is an important step forward for Prime Air and indicates the FAA’s confidence in Amazon’s operating and safety procedures for an autonomous drone delivery service that will one day deliver packages to our customers around the world,” Prime Air Vice President David Carbon said through a public statement.

Royal Navy Vessel 'Collides' With Cargo Ship in Cornwall, England, Reports Say

A cargo ship has reportedly collided with a Royal Navy vessel in Cornwall, sparking a police investigation, according to reports.

The incident occurred at about 08:00 in Falmouth harbour, according to the Daily Mail. Nobody was injured as a result of the incident.

According to reports, a Ministry of Defence spokesman confirmed that a vessel under contract with the department was involved in the collision.

The ship is a range safety and training vessel run by Smit International, under contract with the MoD, according to the Navy campaign group NavyLookout.

Police were called to the site of the incident and have started an investigation.

Sweden attracted worldwide attention earlier this year when it famously stayed open throughout the first months of the coronavirus pandemic, and now it is holding out again, this time refusing to recommend the use of masks.

While most of the world has come to terms with covering their noses and mouths in crowded places, people in Sweden are going without, riding buses and metros, shopping for food, and going to school maskless, with only a few rare souls covering up.

Iranian Oil Ships Take Gold From Venezuela

Congressman Américo De Grazia reported on social media that Iranians are plundering the South American country, taking gold, and violating Venezuelan sovereignty.

The Iranian ship Golsan, which arrived in Venezuela to supply food to the country’s first Persian supermarket, also made a stop at the Orinoco Mining Arc, allegedly to load itself with minerals exploited from the south of the country.

Demonstrators in Helsinki Demand Finland's Withdrawal From EU, Gov't Resignation, Police Say

HELSINKI (Sputnik) - About 350 activists gathered on Tuesday near the Parliament House building in the Finnish capital of Helsinki to demand the government's resignation and the country's withdrawal from the European Union, police said.

A call to participate in the protest demanding a so-called Fixit has been circulating online. All those unhappy with the incumbent government's tax and budget policies and subsidies for the southern EU members, and those "concerned about the well-being of their own people" were invited to take part.

​"A demonstration is being held in front of the parliament building under the slogan 'Finland leaves the EU, the cabinet resigns.' There are about 350 participants in total, the event is taking place peacefully," Helsinki police wrote on Twitter.
