Green Bay Police: Antifa Member with Flamethrower Cried in Fetal Position When Caught

A suspected member of Antifa — who was allegedly armed with a flamethrower — cried in the fetal position before his arrest during a Saturday evening protest in Green Bay, Wisconsin, according to law enforcement.

WBAY reports; Matthew Banta, 23, is charged with obstructing an officer and two counts of felony bail jumping. The criminal complaint says Banta “is known to be a violent Antifa member who incites violence in otherwise relatively peaceful protests.” Police say he’s known as “Commander Red.” A responding officer says he saw four individuals walking towards a protest with baseball bats. One man was wearing a metal helmet with goggles and military-style gear with multiple pouches, and was carrying an Antifa flag. When the officer pulled his squad car in front of the group, they ran away. The officer caught Banta, who was carrying the flag, and says Banta “dropped into the fetal position and began crying.”

“It’s worrisome when people associated with Antifa come here to Green Bay from out of town for the purpose of protesting here or for the purposes of committing violent acts,” said Green Bay Police Chief Andrew Smith. “An unlawful assembly is three or more people who gather in such a manner where property damage, or personal injury is likely to occur,” Smith added. “We determined this was happening on Washington Street. What was happening was a large group of people had blocked traffic on the street had engaged in throwing a bottle at somebody, were pulling up manhole covers off the street and were blocking traffic.” Police said 15 protesters were arrested after the demonstration was declared unlawful. In early August, Banta was charged with biting, kicking, and pointing firearm at a police officer at a protest in Waupaca.

Photos: Donald Trump Visits Burned-Out Business in Kenosha, Wisconsin

President Donald Trump met with business owners affected by the riots in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Tuesday outside a building burned-out by violent rioters last week in reaction to the police shooting of Jacob Blake.

The president spoke with about six people next to a burned-out building that used to be B&L Office Furniture Inc. in Kenosha and told them he would help them rebuild their businesses. “This store was here 109 years,” Trump told reporters. “Just about the oldest in the nation.” ''Scott Carpenter, the co-owner of the office furniture store, thanked Trump for visiting. “I just appreciate President Trump coming today; everybody here does,” he said. “We’re so thankful that we got the federal troops in to help because once they got here, things did calm down quite a bit.” John Rode, the owner of Rode’s Camera Shop, carried an image of his business that had been reduced to rubble a week ago during the riots. '''“We’re going to work with you. We’re going to help you. Okay?” Trump said. “We’ll help you rebuild. It’s a great area. It’s a great state. This should never happen.”'

A crowd of Trump’s supporters gathered in the city to greet the president in Kenosha as well as a group of protesters and Black Lives Matter supporters. Armored personnel carriers were spotted nearby as well as federal law enforcement agents. The president traveled with Attorney General Bill Barr and Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf. After the visit, Trump gathered with business owners and members of law enforcement to discuss the importance of safety in the streets of America’s cities. The president announced that his administration would commit $1 million to support Kenosha police, nearly $4 million to help rebuild small businesses, and $43 million for public safety resources in the state. Trump also welcomed Pastor James and Sharon Ward of the INSIGHT Church to the roundtable discussion. Ward is the pastor for Jacob Blake’s mother, Julia Jackson. (Jacob Blake’s father, Jacob Blake Sr., has said publicly that he does not have a pastor.) Ward said that civil societies were governed by three kinds of law — spiritual law, moral law, and civil law. “Most of the conversation today has been focused on civil law, but until we can really focus on spiritual and moral law and change the hearts of people, we’ll have to continue to build bigger jails and bigger prisons, until we can bring our nation back to the place of spiritual and moral law,” he said.

Court Blocks Release of Trump Tax Returns amid Latest Appeal

NEW YORK (AP) — A federal appeals court on Tuesday blocked a New York prosecutor from obtaining Donald Trump’s tax returns while the president’s lawyers continue to fight a subpoena seeking the records. The three-judge panel ruled after hearing brief arguments from both sides.

Trump’s lawyers had asked for a temporary stay while they appeal a lower-court ruling that granted Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr.’s office access to Trump’s tax returns. A lawyer for Vance’s office had argued that further delays would only impede their investigation. “The question at this juncture is quite simple but also quite important,” Trump lawyer William Consovoy said. “Will the president be given an opportunity to appeal that ruling before his personal records are disclosed to the grand jury and the status quo is irrevocably changed?” A hearing on the merits of Trump’s latest appeal will be held on Sept. 25 after both sides agreed to an expedited schedule — meaning it’s possible the matter could be decided before November’s election. Trump’s lawyers appealed to the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals last month after a district court judge rejected their renewed efforts to invalidate a subpoena issued to his accounting firm. Judge John M. Walker Jr. said at Tuesday’s hearing that the subpoenas cover 11 entities engaged in business dealings as far away as Europe and Dubai. Trump has blasted the long-running quest for his financial records as a “continuation of the most disgusting witch hunt in the history of our country” and predicted the case would again end up before the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court ruled last month that the presidency in itself doesn’t shield Trump from Vance’s investigation, but the high court returned the case to U.S. District Judge Victor Marrero’s courtroom to allow Trump’s lawyers to raise other concerns about the subpoena. Trump’s lawyers then argued that the subpoena was issued in bad faith and overly broad, might have been politically motivated and amounted to harassment. Marrero rejected those claims. Consovoy told the judges Tuesday that the investigation was an “arbitrary fishing expedition.” Carey Dunne, of the district attorney’s office, said Trump and his lawyers have long misrepresented the scope of the investigation as focusing primarily on hush money payments that were paid to protect Trump from adultery allegations. Vance’s lawyers have said they are legally entitled to extensive records to aid a “complex financial investigation.” “The president has complained at every turn that we’ve not announced what the grand jury is looking at as if that itself is bad faith,” Dunne said. “But of course, what the grand jury is looking at is secret. We’re not allowed to make that public, which is what has led to his speculation about the grand jury scope. But none of this speculation is plausible.”

Even if Vance does get Trump’s tax records, those would be part of a confidential grand jury investigation and not automatically be made public. Vance, a Democrat, began seeking the Republican president’s tax returns from his longtime accounting firm over a year ago, after Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen told Congress that the president had misled tax officials, insurers and business associates about the value of his assets. Congress is also pursuing Trump’s financial records, though the Supreme Court last month kept a hold on the banking and other documents that Congress has been seeking and returned the case to a lower court. Trump is the only modern president who has refused to release his tax returns. Before he was elected, he had promised to do so.

Charlie Hebdo Reprints Mohammed Cartoon by Artist Murdered in Islamic Terror

French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo — whose almost whole editorial team was murdered by Islamist gunmen in 2015 — has reprinted a series of cartoons of Islam’s Mohammed to coincide with 13 people going on trial for the terror attack which targeted the publication.

Charlie Hebdo, which has long made its name in eviscerating all comers — showing no fear or favour — has reprinted a series of cartoons for which it is particularly known: depicting and satirising Islam’s Mohammed. The cartoons — which are prohibited in Islam as haram — were cited by the Muslim gunmen who attacked the offices of the newspaper in 2015, killing 12. It was not the first time the magazine had been attacked. Indeed, the publication hired professional protection after their offices had been firebombed in 2011. Regardless, the security guard present at the office on January 7th, 2015, was killed by terror attackers Chérif and Saïd Kouachi, alongside the editorial staff, cartoonists, and others. The new edition will hit the newsstands on Wednesday, the first day of the trial of a group of 13 co-conspirators of the Hebdo attack killers. French newspaper Le Figaro reports the mammoth trial will, beyond the 13 defendants, include 200 complainants and 150 witnesses and is expected to last over two months. Those facing trial are accused of supporting killers, including supplying weapons. Three of those to be tried are believed to be in the Islamic State and their cases will be heard in absentia.

The paper reports that while Charlie Hebdo has been asked several times to print Mohammed cartoons since the attack, it only did so when it was newsworthy. Nevertheless, despite having come under attack in the most real possible sense over the cartoons, they were determined to do so now as those accused of helping the killers came to court. ‘Riss’ — real name Laurent Sourisseau, who was shot during the 2015 attack but survived and now edits the paper — said of the decision: “There was a need for a good reason to do it, a reason which has meaning and which brings something to the debate… to [reprint the pictures] this week at the opening of the trial of the January 2015 attacks, seemed essential to us.” The Charlie Hebdo editor said “We will never lie down. We will never give up” and said it would be cowardice to not print the pictures. The images printed on the latest front cover are 12 Danish cartoons and one former Charlie Hebdo original. The Dutch cartoons were originally published by the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten as part of an exercise in free speech. The paper subsequently became a major target for Islamic extremists, and cartoonist Kurt Westergaard suffered several attempts on his life. Speaking in 2015, ten years on from the controversy, Westergaard said he had no regrets about his art despite now having to live under constant police protection for drawing a picture of Mohammad.

Phones to alert users if coronavirus-positive person is nearby

Public health officials will soon be able to use smartphones for contact tracing without having to build a separate app. The new system, announced Tuesday by Google and Apple, Inc., according to multiple news reports, is called Exposure Notification Express. Through ENE, public health officials will be able to submit a small configuration file to the two tech giants. Google and Apple will then build a system using those files that phone owners can acquire to see if they have been in the proximity of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.

Users of the iPhone will be able to know beginning on Tuesday whether local health officials offer an exposure notification system. If it is offered, users will be able to set it up without downloading an app. Android users will have a similar option, but they will have to download an app. It remains to be seen if notification via smartphones slows the spread of the virus as most governments are not tracking data related to the use of such phones. Maryland, Nevada, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., will be the first places in the United States to employ the new system.
