I use to think the way you are thinking, until I discovered the rules (and test) of "historicity".

Just because you have a copy of a document, does not mean that document is not forged, or even historically correct.

The reason those scriptures were rejected, is a good one. There is only one copy.

In order to get into the bible, there had to be multiple IDENTICAL COPIES from all of the underground churches.

They were rejected if they were not identical.

How would anyone know which was the real document. The way they figured it, God must have let the document get corrupted, as he did not preserve identical copies.

They were also rejected if they did not have more than one copy.

This test is still used today to decide what they will teach you is HISTORY, and what is not worthy of the classroom.

So, now, when people bring up those lost documents, without knowing WHY they were thrown out, I realize they have not done their basic homework on how the scholars decide what is historical writing, what is folklore or fiction, and what can not be verified, using the historicity test.

We have more than 5000 identical fragments of the New testament.

None of those gnostic gospels can pass the historicity test.
