If such a thing were to happen, there would be a transition where you would take your worthless paper money and exchange it for a new type of currency at a given rate.
iirc, someone said that Americans would have a higher exchange rate than foreigners.
And the new money would be backed by gold, meaning there is at least an attempt to stave off runaway/rampant/hyper inflation by limiting how much currency is in circulation.
