CDC asks states to prepare for vaccine distribution before Election Day

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is pressing governors to ready coronavirus vaccine distribution sites before Election Day. “CDC urgently requests your assistance in expediting applications for these distribution facilities … and, if necessary, asks that you consider waiving requirements that would prevent these facilities from becoming fully operational by November 1, 2020,” CDC Director Robert Redfield wrote in a letter to governors. In the Aug. 27 letter, obtained by McClatchy, Redfield urged states to fast-track permits and to make vaccine distribution sites fully operational to guarantee “the success of this urgent public health program.”

There has yet to be a vaccine for the coronavirus that has been proven safe and effective through clinical trials, though many are in the late stages of development. President Trump has said that a vaccine could be ready before Election Day despite his advisers, such as top government infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci, saying that it will take until the end of the year or the beginning of 2021. Trump's comments have raised criticism from outside experts that he is threatening to inject politics into the development of a vaccine, a fear that is reflected in public polling. Redfield added in his letter that waiving some licensing requirements for distribution sites “will not compromise the safety or integrity of the products being distributed,” but he did not expand on the federal government’s plans for distributing the first doses of the vaccine. The CDC created a working group in August tasked with deciding where the first doses should go and which subsets of the population will have first priority, but states are still waiting for finalized plans from the working group.

Here Are the Moderators for the 2020 Debates Between Biden and Trump

The Commission on Presidential Debates has made their decision on who will moderate the three debates between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden for the 2020 election. After presiding over the last presidential debate of the 2016 election, Fox News’ Chris Wallace will return on September 29th to oversee the first face-off between Trump and Biden in Cleveland. The second debate debate in Miami will be held by C-SPAN political editor Steve Scully on October 15th, and the third one in Nashville will be moderated by NBC’s Kristen Welker on October 22nd.

The vice-presidential debate between Vice President Mike Pence and Senator Kamala Harris will happen October 7th at Salt Lake City. The event will be moderated by USA TODAY Washington Bureau Chief Susan Page.

UPDATE: Mediaite obtained an internal memo sent by Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott to staff congratulating Wallace on his selection.

Former Lawyer For Hillary Clinton, Kamala Harris Is Working To Push Kanye Off The Ballot

As rapper Kanye West’s presidential campaign races to get him on the ballot in as many states as possible before their respective drop-dead dates, longtime Democratic lawyer Marc Elias is aiding in the fight to keep West off the ballot. Elias, chair of Perkins Coie’s Political Law Group, previously worked as a lawyer for numerous Democratic campaigns, including Hillary Clinton, Kamala Harris, and John Kerry. Now Elias is listed as counsel on a suit filed Tuesday in a Richmond, Virginia, circuit court. The suit’s plaintiffs include two voters and Virginia residents, Matthan Wilson and Bryan Wright, who claim they were misled by a signature collector and tricked into volunteering to be electors for West’s campaign. The suit states both plaintiffs “would not have signed the Elector Oath but for those false pretenses” and that they do “not intend to vote for West or support his candidacy.” The suit seeks to have West kicked off the ballot in Virginia and is asking for immediate court intervention as deadlines approach for printing and mailing absentee ballots.

The recent involvement of Elias and his prominent Democratic law firm affirms the belief that Democrats are concerned that having West on the ballot, especially in swing states, could siphon black votes away from Democratic nominee Joe Biden, potentially helping the reelection campaign of Donald Trump. When House Majority Whip James Clyburn, D-S.C., was asked last week if West’s goal was to hurt Biden, he replied, “I don’t think there’s any question about that.” The Associated Press and other media reported that GOP lawyers and Republican operatives have helped West’s efforts to get on state ballots as an independent. He is currently on the ballot in at least eight states, including Arkansas, Colorado, Oklahoma, Vermont, Tennessee, Minnesota, Idaho, and Iowa.
