Occupy Lafayette Square Protestors Planning 50 Day ‘White House Siege,’ say ‘Things Could Turn Very Ugly’

On Sep. 17, the ninth anniversary of Occupy Wall Street, protestors are planning to begin a “siege” of the White House that will last fifty days—right up until Nov. 3. The website for the event is planning to bring thousands of protestors into Lafayette Square to “lay siege to the White House.” The site also warns that “the possibility of a civil war breaking out sometime next year is no joke.”

The organizers are citing two main reasons for the planned occupation: an alleged lack of progress on Wall Street since the 2009 occupation and that “Trump is trying to steal the election . . . and things could turn very ugly very quickly as November 3rd approaches.” One image used depicts the White House on fire and others show large riots directly in front of the building.

The FBI recommended contacting the Secret Service for comment. The Secret Service and the Department of Justice have not responded to this reporter’s requests for comment in time for publication.

The specific demands are not clear but the site raises concerns about President Trump refusing to leave office if he loses and that “white supremacists are waiting in the wings, spoiling for a violent showdown.”

These online ramblings are calling for “#METOOers, #BLM activists, Extinction Rebels, Sunrisers, and CodePinks,” to organize and join in Lafayette Park and to create “pop-up sieges at federal buildings in dozens of cities.”

The site used for the advertisements, Adbusters, is a Vancouver crowd-funded online magazine that gives protestors and occupiers a place to advertise plans.

One of the postings, deemed “tactical briefings,” asked readers to submit demands.

These planned events follow mass protests across the country, including one riot that turned into a murder when a Trump supporter was shot by an alleged Antifa criminal in Portland.

It has yet to be seen how many individuals will turn up to the occupation on Sep. 17.

U.S. tech giant Apple (AAPL) now has a greater market cap value than all the companies in Britain’s FTSE 100 index combined.

With a market cap of about $2.25 trillion as of Wednesday morning, Apple’s valuation now exceeds the approximate $2 trillion value of all components in the FTSE 100, which is comprised of the U.K.’s biggest publicly listed companies.

Since Mar. 23 lows, Apple shares have surged 135%. Over that same span, the FTSE 100 has risen 17.4%. From its January highs, the FTSE 100 has dropped 22%.

Large-cap tech stocks like Apple, Facebook (FB) and Google-parent Alphabet (GOOG) have flourished during the COVID-19 pandemic as locked down individuals have increased their digital activities.

In contrast, the FTSE 100 index includes many oil and banking stocks, including HSBC (HSBC), BP (BP), Royal Dutch Shell (RDS-A). The sectors have been hammered this year by the effects of the pandemic.

The FTSE 100 also has a large number of companies engaged in real estate, aviation, hospitality and brick-and-mortar retail.

As of Wednesday morning, the largest component of FTSE 100 was drugmaker AstraZeneca (AZN) which trades on the New York Stock Exchange. The company has a market cap of about $145 billion – meaning it’s about one-fifteenth the size of Apple.

“The FTSE 100 is a dinosaur, full of rather lumbering old-world stocks with precious little growth to offer," said Neil Wilson, chief market analyst at Markets.com. "The FTSE 100 is a very good proxy for the global economy, which we know is on its knees. And if not exposed to the global economy (non-sterling earners), then they are fully exposed to the U.K. economy (e.g. Lloyds, RBS), which is doing worse than peers, we think."

With the exception of online grocery retailer Ocado Group, Wilson added: "There is no tech to speak of [in the FTSE-100], which is where the real money has been made this year. Whilst the U.S. has Zoom (ZM), we have [telecom companies] BT and Vodafone. The U.S. boasts Netflix (NFLX) and Amazon (AMZN) – the FTSE can muster [TV channel] ITV and [supermarket chain] Sainsbury's."

Proactive Investors noted last year that the FTSE 100 should not be viewed as a proxy for the U.K.’s economy.

Brace Yourself: Charlie Hebdo Publishes Muhammad Cartoons Again

They’ve done it again: as the trial of some of those who plotted the Charlie Hebdo jihad massacre begins in France, Charlie Hebdo has republished some of the Muhammad cartoons over which so many people are so enraged. And as always, numerous people are saying that mocking Muhammad is “disrespectful” to Muslims, it’s needlessly “poking the bear,” and the like.

How far we have fallen. Back in 1989, when the Islamic Republic of Iran called for his death for insulting Islam, Salman Rushdie became an international hero of free speech. Later defenders of this fundamental freedom, however, have not fared as well, as The Complete Infidel’s Guide to Free Speech (and Its Enemies) shows.

In Rushdie’s day, Christopher Hitchens noted, “We risk a great deal by ceding even an inch of ground to the book-burners and murderers.” Egyptian Nobel laureate Naguib Mahfouz denounced the Ayatollah Khomeini’s fatwa calling for Rushdie’s death as “intellectual terrorism”—although several years later, under pressure himself from Islamic hardliners (who ultimately stabbed and seriously injured him), he denounced Rushdie’s book as “insulting” to Islam, but he still condemned the death sentence.

Novelist Norman Mailer declared his willingness to die for the freedom of speech, saying of Rushdie: “It is our duty to form ranks behind him, and our duty to state to the world that if he is ever assassinated, it will become our obligation to stand in his place. If he is ever killed for a folly, we must be killed for the same folly.”

That may have been the high-water mark of pop culture support for the freedom of speech.

Over 25 years later, on the evening of May 3, 2015, I was standing next to Pamela Geller at the venue of our just-concluded American Freedom Defense Initiative/Jihad Watch Muhammad Art Exhibit and Cartoon Contest in Garland, Texas when one of our security team ran in and told us that there had been a shooting outside. It is safe to say that if the jihadis had succeeded in their aims, we would both be dead.

ISIS quickly issued a communiqué on the Garland attack, including a death fatwa against Geller. The threat was reinforced by subsequent jihadi attempts on Geller’s life.

But the response of Western politicians and pundits was even more disturbing. This time, they were not nearly as disposed to defend the freedom of speech as they had been at the time of the Rushdie fatwa, or even after the Charlie Hebdo massacre.

“Of course we have a right to draw what we want, but we also have an obligation not to be irresponsibly provocative,” said Michael Coren the ex-Catholic author of Why Catholics Are Right.

“It’s needlessly provocative,” said New York Representative Peter King, whose hearings on Muslim radicalization in 2011 had themselves been widely termed “provocative” back in 2011. King said he thought our event was “insulting someone’s religion.”

Spygate Continues: The New Strzok-Page Emails

In my view, this is evidence of criminal activity which is being withheld from the American people by [Director] Wray’s FBI,” Fitton explained in last week’s Weekly Update.

Newly obtained documents from the FBI have tied Comey to both the FBI’s political unmasking and to the illegal FISA warrant application which wrongly authorized the bureau to spy on president Trump, and a number of individuals close to the administration, according to Fitton. In fact, Judicial Watch is now “reviewing documents confirming that Strzok under James Comey was investigating the president for tweets he was sending.”

As the documents highlight, Comey’s FBI was intent on secretly investigating the president – even to the point of determining when certain tweets were published. “That’s what the FBI was spending its time on in March of 2017, astonishing,” Fitton continues.

Along with these documents, Judicial Watch recently released information that evidences then-FBI Director James Comey’s “intimate involvement in the FISA warrant that was later pulled for being illegal.” In fact, as Judicial Watch recently revealed here, “you’ve got the unmasking being tied to Comey and you’ve got the illegal FISA warrant being tied to Comey.” Comey was “investigating the president because of his critical comments of Barack Obama’s spying on him,” Fitton concludes.

As Fitton warns, “the FBI has been slow-rolling and stone-walling the release of these documents.” “I don’t know Barr is allowing this, I don’t know why Wray is allowing this. There’s some transparency but it’s transparency in many ways designed to frustrate the quest for truth as opposed to furthering it in a timely way.”

Qatar to Kushner: Two states needed to end Israeli-Palestinian conflict

Kushner visited Qatar with hopes another Arab country will normalize ties within months.

Qatar's ruler Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani told White House adviser Jared Kushner on Wednesday that Doha supports a two-state solution, with East Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian state, to end the conflict with Israel, his cabinet said.

Kushner, the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, is in Qatar after a US-brokered accord last month for the United Arab Emirates and Israel to normalize ties.

The UAE is the third Arab country to reach such an agreement with Israel after Egypt and Jordan.

Kushner hopes another Arab country will normalize ties within months. He visited the UAE this week with an Israeli delegation for normalization talks before also traveling to Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

Sheik Tamim told Kushner Qatar remains committed to the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative, in which Arab nations offered Israel normalized ties in return for a statehood deal with the Palestinians and full Israeli withdrawal from territory captured in the 1967 Middle East war.

Four US Coronavirus Vaccine Trials Will Fail, Health Advisers Predict

Operation Warp Speed is spending billions of dollars to fast-track the development of COVID-19 vaccines

Health experts estimate at least four of the vaccines being supported will fail

The Trump Administration remains confident at least one safe and effective vaccine will be available by the end of the year

Historic data suggests at least four of the COVID-19 vaccines currently being supported by the Trump Administration's coronavirus task force might fail the critical "phase three" clinical trials.

In a draft report, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) said it expects four of the vaccines being developed by companies taking part in Operation Warp Speed (OWS) will fail.

The failures are expected to take place during the key phase three trials when up to 30,000 volunteers are inoculated with the new vaccine. NASEM said OWS expects to support seven vaccines candidates with billion-dollar grants.

The OWS's current vaccine candidates are from Johnson & Johnson (Janssen Pharmaceutical), AstraZeneca-University of Oxford and Vaccitech, Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, Merck and IAVI, Vaxart, Inovio, Novavax, and Sanofi and GSK.

Candidate vaccines from Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca have all entered phase three trials. In phase three, thousands of people worldwide are generally inoculated with a new vaccine to test the drug's efficacy and safety.

The Trump Administration said it remains confident at least one safe and effective vaccine will be available by the end of the year and possibly more than one by early 2021. President Donald Trump has even hinted a vaccine might be available in time for the November election.

“Four of the trials will fail, and all subjects in those trials are offered access to an approved vaccine,” wrote NASEM. “Three of the trials will succeed, and, under a 1:1 ratio between members of treatment groups compared to the placebo group, 15,000 participants from each of those trials who were assigned to the placebo condition are offered and approved vaccine.”

91 GOP Senators, Representatives Want FDA to Ban Abortion Pill

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and 19 Republican Senate colleagues, plus 71 House Republicans, want the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ban use of Mifeprex, commonly known as RU-486, to end pregnancies up to 10 weeks after conception.

“It is by now nakedly obvious that the abortion industry and its allies in the media, billionaire philanthropic circles, and special interest groups, have wanted an unregulated and de-medicalized abortion pill since the moment the FDA first approved it in 2000,” Cruz and the others told FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn in a Sept. 1, 2020, letter.

“As you may further know, the Clinton administration approved this lethal drug under pressure from these same groups and under a highly politicized approval process.

“We believe this deadly pill should never have been approved, yet the abortion industry was politically rewarded with an accelerated approval process normally reserved for high-risk drugs that address life-threatening illnesses like AIDS.”

The Mifeprex abortion pill has been used to terminate the lives of an estimated 3.7 million unborn babies, caused 24 maternal deaths, and resulted in more than 4,100 adverse reactions in users, including bleeding, extreme abdominal pain, and life-threatening infections, according to the signers. The drug is also known as “mifepristone.”

There are almost certainly significantly more deaths and reactions associated with the drug than officially reported because victims are likely to go to hospitals rather than back to the abortion clinic that provided the pill.

“Of course, adverse events are notoriously underreported, which makes the true number impossible to assess. Moreover, as of 2016, abortion pill manufacturers are only required to report maternal deaths,” the signers told Hahn.

“However, most women experiencing adverse reactions (such as hemorrhaging) are more likely to seek emergency care at hospitals and emergency rooms, rather than returning to the abortion facility where the pill was prescribed,” the signers continued.

The signers encouraged Hahn to exercise FDA’s existing authority to declare Mifeprex “an imminent hazard to public health” that poses “a significant threat of danger.”

Russian doctors were the ones who provided the necessary assistance in the first days of his hospitalization, thus saving his life. The Russian authorities, in turn, allowed him to be removed from the territory of Russia, despite the fact that it contradicted Russian law, since Navalny has convictions for serious crimes.

New Jihadi Group Claimed Responsibility For Recent Attack On Turkish Post In Greater Idlib

A new jihadi group calling itself “Saryat Ansar Abu Bakr al-Siddiq” has claimed responsibly for the August 28 attack on a Turkish military post in the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib.

In a statement released on September 2, the group said one of its suicide bombers, called “Abu Suleiman Al-Ansari,” had targeted the Turkish post near the town of Salat al-Zuhur, in southwestern Idlib, with a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED).

The jihadi group denied that Turkish troops had destroyed the VBIED before it could reach the post, claiming that dozens of Turkish service members were killed or injured in the attack.

According to Syrian opposition sources, the VBIED’s blast killed a single Turkish-backed militant and injured a number of Turkish soldiers.

Saryat Ansar Abu Bakr al-Siddiq also claimed that Turkish troops panicked and clashed with each other around Salat al-Zuhur’s after the attack. The jihadi group dismissed all the claims of civilian casualties in the attack.

“We affirm our complete independence and our non-subordination to any organization, group or faction, whether inside or outside the Levant,” the group said.

The group added that a video of the attack would be released soon. It also warned civilians from approaching any Turkish post in Greater Idlib.

The Turkish military established dozens of posts and deployed thousands of troops in Greater Idlib over the last year. Turkish forces are actively coordinating with terrorist groups, such as Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham.

Salat al-Zuhur attack will not likely be the last against Turkish troops in Greater Idlib. Saryat Ansar Abu Bakr al-Siddiq vowed to continue its fight against the “infidels” in the region.

Switzerland’s banking regulator said it has opened enforcement proceedings against Credit Suisse Group (CS) in connection with a spying scandal that led to the ouster of its former CEO.

The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority, or FINMA, noted that earlier this year it appointed an auditor to investigate Credit Suisse. With that probe now complete, FINMA will now determine if the bank violated its supervisory laws.

In response to FINMA’s decision, Credit Suisse stated that it “will continue to fully cooperate” with the regulator and that it is “determined to support the effort to ensure a complete and expeditious conclusion of the review of this episode and incorporate lessons learned.”

The bank added that “the observation [spying] of employees is not part of the culture of Credit Suisse.”

Although FINMA cannot fine a bank, it has the power to ban executives from the industry, Bloomberg reported.

The case engulfing Credit Suisse involves allegations that the bank spied on one of its most prominent bankers, wealth management chief Iqbal Khan, who left for rival Swiss bank UBS Group (UBS) last summer.

As a result of the embarrassment arising from the episode, Credit Suisse ousted CEO Tidjane Thiam and replaced him with longtime executive Thomas Gottstein.

However, an internal investigation by Credit Suisse found that Thiam was unaware of the spying, and that the bank’s Chief Operating Officer Pierre-Olivier Bouee was responsible. (Bouee was fired late in 2019). It was later revealed that Peter Goerke, the bank’s former human resources chief, as well as a female U.S executive, had also been illegally surveilled.

Credit Suisse Chairman Urs Rohner (who forced Thiam out) apologized to Khan for the “wrong and disproportionate” observation activities which he admitted caused the bank “severe reputational damage.”

Thiam, who took over the Swiss bank in 2015, had stated at the time of his resignation: "I had no knowledge of the observation [spying] of two former colleagues. It undoubtedly disturbed Credit Suisse and caused anxiety and hurt. I regret that this happened and it should never have taken place."

NY AG Files Motion To Stop Trump Administration’s Efforts to Undermine U.S. Postal Service

NEW YORK – New York Attorney General Letitia James says she has taken action to “halt the Trump Administration’s attempts to dismantle the United States Postal Service (USPS) and disrupt operations in an effort to undermine the November presidential election.” Following a lawsuit she filed last week, Attorney General James today filed a motion for a preliminary injunction, asking the court to quickly stop President Donald Trump, the USPS, and Postmaster General DeJoy from “continuing down the path of slowing mail operations in lead up to Election Day.”

“We know President Trump’s ultimate goal here is to depress turnout and disenfranchise millions of voters,” said Attorney General James. “The president’s actions are the same as those used in dictatorships and authoritarian governments, but we won’t sit idly by as he tries to suppress democracy and every American’s fundamental right to vote. We are filing this motion to stop the president dead in his tracks and to ensure every eligible voter has the opportunity to cast a ballot come November.”

The attorneys general of Hawaii and New Jersey, as well as the city of New York, NY and the city and county of San Francisco, CA all joined Attorney General James in filing this lawsuit and today’s motion for a preliminary injunction.

This matter is being handled by Assistant Attorney General Daniela Nogueira, Special Counsel Morenike Fajana, and Chief Counsel for Federal Initiatives Matthew Colangelo — all of the Executive Division; Assistant Attorney General Lindsay McKenzie and Deputy Bureau Chief Elena Goldstein — both of the Civil Rights Burau; and Assistant Attorneys General Joshua Tallent and Laura Mirman-Heslin — both of the Environmental Protection Bureau. The Civil Rights Bureau and the Environmental Protection Bureau are both part of the Division for Social Justice. Pentagon Silent About Swarms of Military Helicopters Spotted Over Downtown LA at Night

Social media users spotted multiple military helicopters buzzing over Los Angeles on Tuesday night, with the choppers reportedly circling highways, hovering close to the ground and making landings on top of skyscrapers in the downtown area.

The US military is keeping silent about a recent string of videos posted to social media from greater Los Angeles showing unidentified blacked-out helicopters, some of them with their lights off, flying over the city.

Multiple clips of the unusual activity have been posted to Twitter, prompting users to ask what’s going on.

The Drive contributor Tyler Rogoway said the choppers were MH-6 Little Birds, and that they were piloted by the Army’s Night Stalkers, also called the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR), which reportedly regularly engage in training across major US cities, sometimes alongside Navy SEALS, Rangers, the Special Forces Marines, or Delta Force.

“Sometimes they even work with federal law enforcement direct action teams, like the FBI’s vaunted Hostage Rescue Team (HRT) and folks from the intelligence community. This type of military operations in urban terrain training is precisely what people are seeing over downtown Los Angeles tonight,” Rogoway suggested.

The military affairs journalist added that the US Army customarily gives “little if any warning to the public” before starting drills, which he suggested “always causes everything from great concern to outlandish conspiracy theories”.

The chopper sightings follow reports on Monday of odd police and city utility helicopter activity around LA’s major highways.

Israel’s List of Officials Who Might Be Arrested if They Travel Abroad

Israel’s failure to initiate genuine proceedings against people charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity in Palestine opens it up to ICC intervention, write Dana Farraj and Asem Khalil.

In recent weeks, media reports spoke of secret lists Israel was compiling of military and intelligence officials who might be arrested when they travelled abroad if the International Criminal Court (ICC) decided to investigate war crimes in the occupied Palestinian territory (OPT).

In fact, in just the five years since the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) opened her preliminary examination into possible war crimes in the OPT, the Israeli army has killed more than 700 Palestinians and injured tens of thousands.

These deaths and injuries were not isolated incidents, but were part of a broader policy that seeks to suppress Palestinian resistance to the colonization of their land.

As a consequence of Israeli land theft, its illegal settlements and the transfer of its citizens to the OPT, Palestinian families have been divided, faced arbitrary detention, placed under siege and denied freedom of movement amongst many other abuses. Thus, a strong prima facie case can be made that Israel is guilty of crimes against humanity and war crimes and this perhaps helps to explain why it has been unwilling to enquire further into the complaints and files in its possession.

The ICC is established on the principle of complementarity, which means it is only entitled to exercise jurisdiction when national legal systems fail to do so in line with international standards. Significantly, however, this includes situations where these systems purport to act but are unwilling and/or unable to conduct genuine proceedings.

Israel’s ongoing unwillingness to initiate domestic proceedings against persons who are alleged to have committed war crimes and crimes against humanity in Palestine therefore opens up the strong possibility of ICC intervention.

There are a number of indicators that should lead the Office of the Prosecutor (henceforth referred to as the Office or as the OTP) to draw this conclusion.

In particular, three consistent indicators are inspired by the legal and policy framework endorsed by the Office in its overall policy paper of 2013 dealing with preliminary examinations.

These indicators should therefore be taken into account by the Office when considering Israel’s unwillingness to investigate and prosecute crimes. (The Office of the Prosecutor has other indicators to determine the question of complementarity but this brief concentrates on the aspects that are relevant to the authors’ arguments.)

The first indicator is the number of complaints and files that were closed without a genuine, independent and impartial investigation.

The second tackles fictional investigations against low-level soldiers that effectively protect the decision-makers from prosecution.

The third is Israel’s ongoing unwillingness to respect international humanitarian law (IHL) and international human rights law (IHRL). In addition, the brief discusses the role of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) as it relates to the ICC.

Turkey Threatens To Shoot Down UAE Jets, US Ends Arms Embargo On Cyprus

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has again extended operations by a seismic research vessel in disputed waters in the eastern Mediterranean, days after threatening to shoot down UAE fighter aircraft if they approach Turkish vessels or territory. As Turkey insists on pursuing provocative actions and rhetoric, which the Greeks are determined to match, the US has announced that it is ending a 33-year arms embargo against Cyprus.

Turkey has had a seismic research vessel escorted by several warships exploring for gas in areas claimed by Greece in the Mediterranean Sea since early August. The Turkish navy issued a new advisory for the surveying mission on Monday, saying the ship would be working until September 12 instead of September 1.

The Greek Foreign Ministry reacted by saying that the new advisory was illegal. “Turkey continues to ignore calls for dialogue and to escalate its provocations. Greece won’t be blackmailed,” the ministry said in a statement.

Greece has dispatched its own naval ships to shadow the Turkish vessels. The European Union (EU) again called for dialogue between Ankara and Athens earlier on Monday.

Also on Monday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan slammed Greece’s reported deployment of troops to an island just off Turkish shorelines, saying Turkey would not tolerate such acts of ‘piracy’ in the Aegean and Mediterranean regions. According to media reports, Greek military personnel and supplies have been deployed to the island of Kastellorizo, a legally demilitarized island that lies less than three miles off Turkey’s coastline in the eastern Mediterranean.

“No one can confine Turkey, which has the longest coastline in the Mediterranean, to the shores of Antalya. We are determined to defend the maritime rights of our citizens and the people of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC),” Erdogan said following a tour of the Black Sea province of Giresun.

The EU has taken sides with member state Greece, calling on Turkey to stop the seismic research activities in the Mediterranean.

France is building up its military presence in the eastern Mediterranean and conducting joint drills with Greece. Turkey has been holding its own military exercises in the area.

Greece and Turkey almost went to war in 1974 over Cyprus, which has since been divided, with the northern third run by a Turkish Cypriot administration recognized only by Turkey and the southern two-thirds governed by the Greek Cypriot government. LINK

Late last week, Al-Quds Al-Araby reported that Turkey will not hesitate to shoot down any United Arab Emirates (UAE) aircraft if Turkish sovereignty is violated in the eastern Mediterranean.

“We will not hesitate to shoot down any UAE aircraft if it approached the Turkish waters or the work area of Oruç Reis near Crete Island in the eastern Mediterranean,” a source told Al-Quds Al-Araby.

According to the source: “The UAE is trying to play a role which is bigger than its size. It is playing with fire. If it violates the redlines or it approaches the Turkish waters, it will receive a harsh lesson.”

These warnings follow reports that the UAE has sent several F-16 fighter jets and other aircraft to Crete, in support for its ally Greece against Turkey.

The Greek chief of staff confirmed that the UAE aircraft would take part in joint military drills between the Greek and UAE air force, in order to increase readiness and improve combat abilities.

“These drills came as a result of the relations between the two countries,” the Greek chief of staff disclosed, noting the “strong” communication between the armed forces of Greece and the UAE.
