The only thing that makes sense biochemically is if 'adrenochrome' refers side effects felt during anti-aging blood transfusion treatments in which the (unwilling) donors are fully drained.
As the human body is dying it releases a serge of adrenaline and hormones (possibly including DMT). And if a healthy and non-dying adult is receives this blood then they would DEFINITELY feel effect from it.
My own interpretation. It's the only way to fit the pieces together. The idea of a chemical being separated from blood to form a concentrate that can be taken orally technically implausible.
