Ray Drake of Des Moines had four trees on his property come down. He also lost at least part of a privacy fence — but was unable to join as others ventured out in the following days and started hauling off debris.
Since 1989, Drake has been paralyzed, leaving his sisters to handle his care.
When his sister Janice saw the damage on Drake’s property, she knew they’d need some help.
It was Doug Applegate, one of Drake’s old high school friends, who really got things moving after Janice contacted him and he saw the extent of the work that would be needed.
The student-athletes showed up, donned gloves and started rolling away sections of the trees as they were cut up.
Such work from a business could have easily cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars, but the team was done in two hours.

The Michigan Board of State Canvassers approved two recall petitions Wednesday seeking to drive Democrat governor Gretchen Whitmer out of office over her Coronavirus emergency orders, including her “shelter-in-place” lockdown and her effort to ban elective medical procedures in the state. Some functions in Michigan are still shut down as Whitmer prolongs her unilateral control. Activists Michael Garabelli and James Makowski now have the ability to force a recall election if they put together a little more than a million signatures — which is possible if the anti-Whitmer patriot movement comes out strong to reject a governor that smeared anti-lockdown protesters at their own State Capitol as white racists.
Wellston Medical Center owner Jordan Warnsholz is speaking out about the persecution he is enduring at the hands of the state of Michigan after he and others sued Democrat Governor Gretchen Whitmer and her attorney general and human services director for imposing tyrannical Coronavirus orders this spring that negatively impacted his patients and his own business. This case is similar to the situation in Minnesota, where the state is planning to put kids in foster care if their parents contract the virus, and Oregon, where a salon owner says CPS was sent to her home when she defied the government and opened her business.

It was disgusting. It was another criminal abuse of power by gov Whitmer.

Dr. Deborah Birx has called for statewide face mask mandates, despite mounting public resentment.
“To every university student out there, if you have done something that is not so great and so smart, you’ve been in a crowd without a mask, you’re likely to become infected,” she stated. “Do not go home to your parents or your grandparents over Labor Day weekend and spread the virus to them.”
The White House task force coordinator made those comments to reporters in Livonia, Michigan on Wednesday. Her remarks came after many schools across the U.S. resumed in-person classes with new safety precautions in place.
Birx also praised state and local officials for enforcing face mask mandates.
“The best enforcement for masks is retail. I will see people like get out of their car, run up to the gas station and then they see the sign: ‘No mask, no entry.’ That kind of constant behavioral reinforcement, that we need to have a mask on when we’re in public and anywhere. According to reports, the number of COVID-19 cases has surpassed 6 million, despite face mask mandates being in place for months in a number of states.
