Standoff with shots fired after man on a moped tried to run over electrical workers

A late Wednesday afternoon standoff with shots fired finally came to a peaceful end in far south Newton County with one man in jail. Sheriff Billy Rowles said it all began when electrical crews reported that a man riding a moped was trying to run over them as they were working to try to restore power.

It happened on Indian Lake Road at a boat ramp on the Sabine River, just south of Deweyville.

According to Rowles, the 36-year-old man was believed to be under the influence of drugs and was armed with a modified M-16 rifle that had been turned into a handgun, which he shot into the air several times.

Rowles said he was able to negotiate with the man from a distance and finally convinced him to put the weapon down and he was then taken into custody about an hour after the standoff began.

His name has not yet been released pending formal charges and arraignment.
