Report: DOJ to File Antitrust Charges Against Google in the Coming Weeks

The New York Times claims in a new report that the Department of Justice has plans to file antitrust charges against Google within the coming weeks.

The New York Times reports that the Justice Department plans to bring an antitrust case against Google within the next few weeks after Attorney General William P. Barr reportedly overruled lawyers who said they needed more time to build a case against the tech giant. The New York Times writes: Justice Department officials told lawyers involved in the antitrust inquiry into Alphabet, the parent company of Google and YouTube, to wrap up their work by the end of September, according to three of the people. Most of the 40-odd lawyers who had been working on the investigation opposed the deadline. Some said they would not sign the complaint, and several of them left the case this summer. Some argued this summer in a memo that ran hundreds of pages that they could bring a strong case but needed more time, according to people who described the document. Disagreement persisted among the team over how broad the complaint should be and what Google could do to resolve the problems the government uncovered. The lawyers viewed the deadline as arbitrary.

The Times goes on to add that this case has been under investigation for almost a year with dozens of Justice Department lawyers working in two groups, each overseeing a separate line of inquiry. The two main areas being investigated were Google’s dominance in search and the company’s control over the online advertising ecosystem. Google has control over approximately 90 percent of web searches worldwide, many rivals have complained that Google extends its dominance by making its search and browsing tools defaults on phones running its Android operating system. Google also takes one-third of every dollar spent on online advertising.

Donald Trump Jr. on Joe Biden’s Mental Decline: He’s Had Two Brain Aneurysms Requiring Surgery

Former Vice President Joe Biden’s brain aneurysms and related brain surgeries are linked to his visibly impaired cognition, said Donald Trump Jr., author of Liberal Privilege: Joe Biden And The Democrats’ Defense Of The Indefensible, offering his remarks on Thursday’s edition of SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Daily with host Alex Marlow. I quote Joe Biden’s own doctor [in my book],” said Trump Jr. “Americans don’t know that this guy’s had two brain aneurysms requiring brain surgery. The chances of being normal after one of those things is not very high. After two, it’s almost impossible.” Biden “forgets where he is on a daily basis” and often “can’t remember the point that he’s trying to make so often like we saw in the debate when remember I’m oh, you know the thing and I all I don’t want to take any more,” observed Trump Jr. “If the average American knew that the guy who wants the nuclear football actually has a real cause and effect relationship with mental deficiency, you’d start questioning it,” he said.

Trump Jr. noted news media’s broad refusal to report on Biden’s cognitive decline. “If Donald Trump made a Joe Bidenism, the media would be all over it every day. This guy does it and they’re like, ‘Oh, he’s brilliant.'” “I don’t mean to make light of mental decline,” continued Trump Jr. “A lot of people know people that deal with these issues. These are really serious things, but we’re going to give this guy the nuclear football? He’s going to get the codes? We’re going to trust him with your 401k and the world’s largest economy and overseeing democracy?” Biden’s damaged mind allows him to be a puppet of his handlers, warned Trump Jr. “Joe Biden is simply the camouflage to get those people a position of power,” concluded Trump Jr., describing Biden as a vehicle for Marxist and communist ideology via politicians like Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX).

Chinese chip maker goes under after receiving $20B in investments

A Chinese semiconductor manufacturer that was able to procure nearly $20 billion in investments has gone under, abandoning a new factory in Wuhan without explanation, according to a Shanghai-based news service. Wuhan Hongxin Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., which recently said it was not aware of any financial problems, had claimed it would soon be capable of producing 7-nanometer chips. Only South Korean firm Samsung Electronics and Taiwan's TSMC are capable of mass-producing the chips. China Business Network reported Wednesday the company, which partly built some of its factories in Wuhan, had promised investors, including the Chinese government, that it would be capable of manufacturing 7- and 14-nanometer chips. HSMC's chief executive is Taiwanese national Chiang Shang-yi, a former chief operating for TSMC.

From 2018 to 2019, HSMC was able to amass more than $18.7 billion in investments from the Chinese government and other investors based on those claims. The firm had also said it would be able to produce 60,000 wafers annually. The Chinese government may have approved its investment in the firm as part of its policies. Beijing's Made in China 2025 Plan seeks to upgrade the nation's industries and achieve independence in the area of aerospace, semiconductors and biotech. CBN reported the Wuhan factory site remains unfinished, with three skeletal structures seen in an area that was described as the equivalent of 59 soccer fields. Construction may have been suspended because HSMC stopped paying its builders. Sources told CBN workers' salaries have not been paid for eight months.

China's pursuit of semiconductors that rival South Korea or Taiwan continues in 2020. In July, Beijing began to offer a 10-year corporate tax break for firms that could produce chips of 28 nanometers or smaller, according to the South China Morning Post. South Korean television network SBS reported in August Chinese companies have been recruiting South Korean engineering talent to realize its goals, including in the area of OLED display technology. South Korean TV makers hold the dominant position in the market.
