I think Reinoehl had to die because of what he knew. They originally let him go for the earlier gun possession charge and used that as leverage. His mission was to kill a Trump supporter. Once he'd done that, he became a liability that had to be got rid of. The Vice interview was allowed to happen in the hope of gaining some sympathy and trying to make him a martyr.
